「おめでとうございます、お嬢さん、もう妊娠1ヶ月です」

医師の祝賀の声に、静華の顔は一瞬にして青ざめ、血色が失せた。「検査間違いでしょうか？私は胃の病気で……妊娠なんてあり得ません。もう一度確認していただけませんか」

「1ヶ月前に性行為はありましたか」

「……ありました」

「避妊措置や緊急避妊薬の服用は？」

雨の夜に帰宅した胤道（たねみち）とのことを思い出し、静華は首を横に振った。

「それなら当然ですよ」医師は訝しげに笑った。「避妊せずに性行為があれば妊娠の可能性が高いのは常識でしょう。どうして不可能だと言えるのですか」

反論の余地がないと悟った静華は胸元で拳を握り締め、覚悟を決めて頼み込んだ。「先生、検査結果を書き換えていただけませんか？妊娠していないことに……お願いです。多額のお礼を……」

「当院は正式な医療機関です」医師は眉をひそめた。「患者の検査書類を改ざんするのは違法です。用がなければお引き取りください。次の方どうぞ！」

診断書を握りしめ病院を出た静華は、喧騒に満ちた街を見渡しながら帰宅をためらっていた。胤道が妊娠を知れば――あの男が自分を居させてくれているだけでも有難いのに、この子は間違いなく中絶を強要される。

震える指先で腹部を撫でながら俯く。静華はどうしてもこの命を守りたい。

対策を考える間もなく胤道からの着信が鳴る。躊躇いながら受話器を取ると、低く渋い声が響いた。「検査は終わったか？戻れ」

胤道の忍耐は30分が限度だ。車中ずっと不安に苛まれた静華が別荘のロビーに駆け込むと、三階の禁足区域から胤道が降りてくる姿が見えた。

絹のパジャマに身を包んだ胤道は開いた襟元から鍛えられた胸筋を覗かせ、整えられた髪と彫刻のような美貌は誰もが目を奪われるほど。六年前、まさにこの完璧な容姿が静華の心を縛り、胤道の名ばかりの妻として、二年間、実質的な役割もなく過ごすことを甘んじて受け入れた。

階段を降りる指先に揺れる煙草の匂いが迫る。妊娠を思い出し息を止める静華の耳に、冷たい質問が突き刺さった。「検査結果は？」

喉を締め付けられるように呼吸を整え、かすれた声で答える。「大丈夫……特に問題なく……」

「先日の本宅での嘔吐は？」

「胃の病気です」胤道の漆黒の瞳を見られずに唇を噛む。「あの時食事が不規則だったから……持病なんです」

重い沈黙が流れる。頭上から注がれる灼熱の視線に、静華は唇を嚙み締め、指が絡み合う。何かがバレたかと思った瞬間、胤道はソファへ向きを変えた。「飯を作れ。腹が減った」

ほっと胸を撫で下ろし、静華は急いでキッチンへ向かう。

彼女の料理の腕は、月に一度の本宅訪問を除けば、数少ない胤道との平穏な時間を保障する特技となっていた。胤道が好んで口にする炒め物のため、時折この別荘に足を運んでくれる――もっとも、彼は多くの場合、あの人に会うために来た。

30分後、三品の料理とスープを並べる。胤道に汁物をよそい、自分は端で静かに箸を運ぶ。

元来が荒削りな育ちだった彼女は、胤道に矯正されるままに洗練された作法を身につけた。今では男と同じ所作で膳に向かえるまでになったが、それでも胤道の食事風景が絵巻から抜け出したような美しさを湛えるのとは対照的だ。彼の一挙手一投足は、何度見ても飽きることがない芸術品のようだった。

食後、食器を下げようと胤道の前の茶碗に手を伸ばした時、突然胤道が口を開いた。「佐藤に連絡した。今日から付き添わせる」

佐藤は胤道の側近だ。

手が止まり、慌てて問う。「どちらへ？本宅の呼び出しですか？それとも彼女の旧友……急ぎでなければ明日まで待って頂けませんか？今日は検査で……」

「産婦人科へ」

胤道はまぶたすら上げず、冷たい宣告を下した。「森、緊急避妊薬を飲むくらいの分別があると思ってた。この子は残せない」
