•Cassie’s POV•

Jerald leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on my lips before resting back against the pillow.

“That was wonderful, honey,” he muttered.

I moved closer, resting my head on his chest, the steady warmth of his body seeping into mine. His heartbeat was calm now and I found myself tracing slow patterns on his skin with my fingers.

“I love it,” I whispered.

He chuckled softly, the sound vibrating beneath my cheek. “You say that every time.”

“Because it’s always true,” I replied with a smile.

His arm tightened around me, protective and familiar. “I don’t know what I’d do without moments like this,” he said quietly. “Without you.”

I lifted my head to look at him, surprised by the seriousness in his voice. “You don’t have to say things like that.”

“I want to,” he said, brushing a strand of hair away from my face. “You make everything feel… right.”

My chest warmed at his words, and I settled back against him, listening to his breathing slow.

“My love,” Jerald mumbled, his voice

•Cassie POV•I hesitated by the door for a while before pushing it open. Jerald was sitting by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring at the view with a glass cup of liquor in his hand.It had been a long time since I’d seen Jerald take alcohol. The few times I remembered him drinking was when we were out for a party or an event.I walked closer to him and sat on the couch opposite him. “My love, I’m so sorry for everything that happened today. I know saying everything will be alright won’t change anything, but the investigator will figure out who did this.”He didn’t say a word for a while. He took a sip from the drink before dropping the glass on the table. Then he turned to me. His eyes were slightly red, and the sight broke my heart.“I knew I had so many enemies,” he muttered without looking in my direction. “So many people who have always wanted to give others a reason to hate me and my company. But I didn’t know they would come this far.”I placed my hand on his, rubbing my thumb

•Scott POV•I sat on the couch in my living room, scrolling through the list of companies on my tablet. There were so many companies I could propose an investment deal to, but the chances of getting one were low, all because of Layla’s father and the comment he made online about me years ago.I sighed deeply, rubbing my hand over my forehead.“This is fucking insane,” I muttered under my breath, my hand balling into a fist as Jerald’s rejection replayed in my mind. Somehow, my thoughts drifted to Cassie. The way she had stared at me the park as I spoke to her made me feel like if I kept pushing, she might eventually listen to me. And when she did, I would explain everything that happened in the past.Maybe if she understood, she would hate me less. And that alone would be to my advantage. The sound of heels clicking against the tiled floor pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked up to see Layla walking in, a smile plastered on her face. I wondered what could possibly make her smile at

•Cassie POV•I sat on the couch opposite Mrs. Angela, my hands resting on my lap as my mind raced. I kept thinking of what to do, how I could help Jerald prove that the incident was a setup. But the voice of the reporter on the TV caught my attention, and I felt heat crawl up my sleeves. The woman from earlier, the one who had accused Jerald of killing her husband, stood in front of the camera, crying uncontrollably.“How am I going to survive without Andrew?” she cried, sniffling. “He was all I had. I told Andrew to quit working for Lewis Motor. Look at what happened. If Lewis Motor didn’t exist, my husband would be here with me now.”My chest tightened.Mrs. Angela grabbed the remote from the table and switched off the TV, throwing it aside angrily. “How could she say such a thing?” she snapped. “Whatever happened isn’t Jerald’s fault or his company’s fault. This is clearly a setup.”I opened my mouth to agree with her, to defend Jerald the way she had, but the words refused to come

•Cassie POV•The smoke coming from the car became even more intense. The rescue team rushed out immediately, running toward the car to rescue the driver, but before they could even get close, there was a loud ticking sound, then the car exploded.A loud gasp escape my lips as I fell to the ground, Jerald quickly stood behind me forming a protective stance over me. Everyone around us ducked because of the explosion, and if I wasn’t present, I would’ve sworn it was a Tsar bomb that had gone off.My ears rang painfully as heat brushed past my skin. I could taste smoke in my mouth as pieces of metal landed around us with loud crashes.“Are you okay?” Jerald asked, but I could barely hear him.My eyes drifted back to the car, or what was left of it, and my heart broke completely. The flames danced wildly, eating up everything in sight. There was no way anyone could have survived that.I knew exactly what had just happened would do to Jerald’s company.I didn’t know how Jerald truly felt at

•Cassie POV•The next morning, I woke up early to get Cara ready for school. The room was still quiet, the curtains barely letting in the soft morning light. I helped her sit up on the bed and gave her the medication the doctor prescribed. He said she was okay now, but I still needed to make sure whatever caused the reaction didn’t happen again. She swallowed it slowly, her face calm, but her eyes looked tired.“Mommy, I don’t want to wear a bow today,” Cara said as I reached for the purple bow, about to pin it on her neatly packed ponytail.I paused and leaned closer so I could look at her face. “Why, baby?” I asked gently. “You love wearing your bow to school.”“Yes, mommy,” she said quietly, “but I don’t want to today. Aunt Maria said I’ll get bullied, and my bows make me look like a doll on display.”My heart skipped, and a sharp heat rushed through me. I forced myself to stay calm as I crouched to her level, placing my hands on her knees.“How could she say that to you?” I mutter

•Cassie POV•“Mommy, who’s that man?” Cara asked as she sat in the back seat of the car, her head resting on my laps while I brushed my hand over her hair.“Baby, that man is someone mommy once knew a long time ago,” I muttered, playing with a strand of her hair. “He used to mean a lot to mommy, but not anymore. That’s why mommy was harsh to him.”Cara pouted and adjusted softly on my legs. “Okay, mommy.”I took in a deep breath and rested my back against the seat, staring as the city blurred past. It had been a good seven years, and I hadn’t expected Scott to still act like the incident had happened just yesterday. I remembered the day I said yes to Jerald.I thought of Scott, how much I wanted him to suffer the way I had. But as I started to receive love and attention from Jerald, I felt maybe things happened for a reason. If that incident hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have found Jerald. But now, seeing Scott always trying to get my attention, I didn’t know if getting a restraining or
