Jacob

The iron gates of the school loomed against the clouded sky, their sharp points shimmering with the morning dew.

I felt the cold air hit my face as I tightened my grip on my backpack, the fabric making weird noises under my sweaty hands. I couldn’t shake off the last words from my uncle. “Don’t embarrass us.” They hung stiffly on my chest, almost making it impossible to breathe.

Kenny, my cousin, had already disappeared into the crowd of the bad boys, their laughter ringing out like tiny shards of glass.

I stood on the sidelines, my oversized shoes… a hand-me-down gift from Kenny, a hint of his expensive cologne still lingering… scraping hard against the old tiled floor. It felt like the ground itself was trying to swallow me whole.

“An orphaned charity case.”

The whispers were loud and clear. They moved through the noise of fancy shoes and blazers, wrapping painfully around me. I kept my head down, but the words still gnawed at the back of my neck.

The Spanish classroom was supposed to be empty during the third period. I knew that well enough. I’d been hanging out there every Thursday for weeks now since Kenny had deliberately spilled paint on my only nice shirt in front of the whole drama club.

The door creaked as I pushed it open, eager to get my hour of peace and silence, and maybe work on my homework too.

But that plan fell apart as soon as I walked in.

Daniel Cobbs slumped in the teacher’s chair like he owned the place, and he kind of did. His legs flopped across the desk. His shoes were fancy, and he had one of the juniors kneeling by his feet… was it Paxton or Patrick? His head moved up and down between Daniel’s thighs, and I could hear the slurp sounds as Daniel kept pushing his head further down.

I froze as I watched Daniel’s lip part slightly, letting out a growl.

He suddenly looked up.

Our eyes met and time felt like it stopped.

My mouth turned dry. Daniel’s blue eyes, like the ocean, darkened as he scanned me. The junior scrambled away, wiping the saliva off his mouth in a panic.

Daniel just sat there, staring, his smirk dangerous as he flexed his fingers against the chair.

My feet finally moved and I ran.

The hallway stretched around me, the portraits of old principals glaring down as I burst through the door and into the field. The cold air burned in my lungs, but I couldn’t stop, and the pounding in my chest only grew thicker.

At dinner, the dining hall was loud with the clinking of silverware and bragging from boys who had everything. Kenny threw a carrot at my head and grinned widely.

“You look like you’ve just seen a ghost, cousin.”

My hand shook as I held my spoon tightly, scraping against my plate like nails on a board. I could hardly focus on the talks about cars and last season’s whatever. All I could hear was the awful sounds from earlier, the squeak of leather when Daniel shifted.

My uncle’s words echoed in my mind. “This scholarship is your only chance. One fuck up, and it’s gone.” He’d said it over breakfast while tapping his expensive pen on the table.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over the table. I didn’t need to look up to know who it was, but I did anyway, feeling that stormy gaze on me.

Daniel stood there with a tray in one hand, a grin sharp as a knife. “Mind if I join you?” His voice was smooth, the kind that makes you comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time.

Kenny was excited at the chance and quickly made space. “Danny! Sure, have a seat!”

Daniel slid onto the bench, his thigh brushing against mine, sending a jolt through me. He leaned in, his cologne engulfing us, warm and familiar, reminding me of my mom’s old perfume collection.

“New kid,” Daniel whispered, his breath warm against my ear, “let’s have a chat.”

The locker room after practice smelled awful. Like dirt and sweat, and the steam lingered on the walls. I took my sweaty shirt off but was startled when the door slammed shut.

Daniel leaned against it, a towel hanging low on his hips, water running down his chest. The lights made him look almost unreal.

“You have a choice here,” he said, his tone almost calm. He stepped closer, and I found myself pressed against the lockers.

“Do exactly as I say…” Daniel’s fingers grazed the skin above my waistband, and I shivered… “or I’ll make sure you don’t graduate here.”

I felt my stomach drop.

The scholarship.

A roof over my head.

The last link to a good life.

Daniel stepped even closer, and I could see the seriousness in his eyes. Water slid down his chest, following a path down to where his towel sat.

“You don’t belong here,” Daniel murmured, brushing my lip with his thumb. “But I can make you fit.”

I stood there, underneath him, shaking. I tried to speak but couldn’t find the right words or any words at all. It seemed a lump had just suddenly grown in my throat.

Daniel scanned my face for a little longer and with subtle taps on my face he said, “You have until tomorrow to give me an answer.”

I watched him turn, the towel dropped down his legs and my heart almost leaped out of my chest when I suddenly realized Daniel was on a short and he’d dropped the towel on purpose.

The next morning, I found my locker smeared with red and almost trashed.

It wasn’t paint, but something far worse. It looked fresh, clear against the metal. Inside, snuggled between my maths and biology book, was a slip of white paper.

It read.

“Welcome to the dungeon fag.”

Jacob “Meet me at the theater after class.” Daniel had sent. The class ended, but before we could leave, Mr Richard came in. Fuck!“Can I go to the bathroom, Mr. Richard?” Daniel raised his hand. “You can go after the pop quiz, Cobbs.”The whole class roared in shock. Pop quiz? Mr Richard was definitely up to something with this.It was like he stood at the door, waiting for the teacher to finish, so he could come in immediately and stop anyone from leaving. “Could it be that these photos and texts were from him?” The thought sounded ridiculous in my head. Then another thought came to my head, and my eyes flickered to Mr Richard and then to Daniel, and as if he understood what I wanted to do, he nodded his head in agreement.Text the unknown number. That was the plan. If it was him sending the texts, the we’d find out. But then, he wouldn’t be stupid enough to bring the phone to class, and even if he did, it would be on silent. But I went ahead and texted the number anyway.

Daniel“Daniel,” Jacob called out almost out of breath. “I’m sorry about last night. I…l…”“Don’t be Jake!” I said sharply, walking in to my room and he just followed, without waiting for me to invite him in.“Are you okay? You look a mess.” He asked, when we were inside the room. I’m not okay, Jake. But you wouldn’t care if I told you that.Jacob had been apologized for not coming over last night… but not about the incident at the office. “I’m fine. You can leave now.”A door slammed shut, causing us to jump. “You should go be with Mr Richard.”“What?”I didn’t answer. Then he let out a short laugh. “What you saw yesterday… that’s not…”“Don’t care what it was, Jake. It’s none of my business.”Jacob stepped closer, grabbing my hand. “I’m so sorry you had to see that, Daniel.”His eyes looked like he was about to cry, and my heart couldn’t take it if he did, but the words in my throat refused to come out.“I was stupid enough to trust Mr Richard and that was why that happened.”He w

DanielWalking back to the room, with Reggie striding right behind me, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d seen at Mr Richard’s office.Jacob was pinned against the wall, his eyes closed, and Mr Richard… kissing him. He didn’t seem to be fighting against it… or trying to push him off him. He just stood there, eyes closed…hands raised slightly about his shoulders. And Mr Richard? Who the fuck did he think he was to do that… to kiss Jacob. He wasn’t his to play with… or whatever it was he was doing.Jacob was mine. Even without the contract… he belonged to me.And if Mr. Richard thought he would just take him from me… then he had another thing coming. The walk back to the dorm was quick, but each step I took sent shivers of pain down my spine. Wanted to run back, and punch Mr Richard in the face… hard! And drag Jacob out of the office, but there was no point doing that.He seemed to like what was being done to him… to like Mr Richard. Reggie stayed with me for a little while,

Jacob The door slammed shut behind us, with a crack that echoed through the empty hallway. My chest tightened like I was having an asthma attack, but my feet couldn’t move… couldn’t run after him, and my hands didn’t stop trembling. There was a confusing smug on Mr Richard’s face. Like was happy about everything that had just happened. My hand balled into fists at my side, as I stared at him.The awful moment when the door opened… and then was shut, replayed in my head.Pressed my palms on my face, wishing it had all been a nightmare. Daniel’s cologne still filled the office. Then I heard Reggie’s voice echo in the hallway. “What the hell happened man?”Footsteps approached Mr Richard’s office, and then they were gone. Slumped in the chair weakly. That stupid smug still playing on Mr Richard’s face, but my mind hardly registered it. This whole thing had been a misunderstanding, but the look on Daniel’s face before he shut the door… he wouldn’t believe that so easily. Finally ma

Daniel Still couldn’t believe Jacob would sign the agreement. He’d fought against it the very first time I talked about it, and soon after. Days after that too, and just when I’d put it at the back of my mind, he just walked in with it. I’d been shocked and didn’t know what to say or how to react. It did make me happy, real happy, but he sure had taken his damn time and now, it felt different. Not just the agreement, that was just a piece of paper, but everything else. The way I saw him, how he made me feel. The feelings grew stronger in the pit of my stomach. I hated it… or did I? Always thought Jacob finally signing the damn piece of paper would change things for us… give me the control I so badly wanted, but it did the exact opposite. Not only did I not understand my feelings anymore… I’d lost all control over them. And when he stared at me in class, my whole heart made weird noises… noises I didn’t understand… I couldn’t.Just what was he doing to me? Thank God Ares sho

JacobDaniel just stood in the middle of the room, his eyes wide and unreadable. The night light caught the gold flecks in them.He looked beautiful… breathtaking.Wanted to say something to ease up the silence but my throat felt too tight, like it would tear apart if I tried to speak. We just stood in silence, then he walked to the table to drop the envelope.“That’s the ag…”“I know what that is, Jake.” He snapped, and I think he immediately regretted it.How could he be so mad when he hadn’t even opened it yet?Did he think I didn’t sign it?There were so many questions in my head, as to why he was acting the way he did. Wanted to reach for him, to kiss him and tell him… that I’ve signed the agreement. That I would be his dirty little secret for however long he wanted, but I never got that chance, because he knew… he knew I signed it.Maybe he wasn’t expecting me to… but I genuinely thought that was what he wanted. “Aren’t you gonna regret it, Jake?” His voice was low, and his

Daniel The class took longer than usual, or maybe it was just me. Didn’t hear one thing the teacher said. All I could think about was Jacob, and why he was being cold today. It was one thing for him to not have called or texted after the events the previous day, but ignored me in class, like I was some pathetic stalker. The class finally ended, but there was no way I could talk to him, not with everyone there like that, and I couldn’t afford to miss any other classes. So I’d have to be like this until after the third period. Not knowing, if something else had happened… or if I’d done something wrong was killing me. Kept glancing, but he wouldn’t even spare me a second glance. It was like I no longer existed to him. Reggie kept blabbing about some stupid party. It was beginning to get really annoying, the party. Had heard few people talk about it, and yet it seemed like it would never happen. If only I could go over to him, to ask him what I’d done this time. There were many

DanielThe first morning light crept in through the window, almost blinding me. The events the previous day had left my mind wandering from place to place. Tried to push the thoughts aside but it was stuck like a fucking glue in my head. And there were also some parts I would rather they stayed. Blinked against it the morning light, my body heavy with exhaustion, my eyes trying to close back, but I forced myself to stay awake. It was morning and time to get ready for school. Everything that happened the previous day replaying in my mind. The talk with Sarah, The event in my room… Jacob’s lips on mine, the warmth of his body on mine, the way his hands gripped the back of my neck… Then the meeting in the clearing. The texts and photos we’d both gotten before the meeting… and the sender not showing up. Jacob hiding it all from me… but I couldn’t even be mad, because I did the same thing. But it was because I wanted to protect him. My legs were tangled in the sheets, as I rolled
