Once everyone had a copy, Karen wrote the remaining time on the board and quietly sat down next to Jenny, pulling out a book to read. I stayed low over my desk, scribbling my name on the paper and starting the test.

People began whispering and pulling out books. Karen rolled her eyes, set her book down, and stepped up onto the podium. Jenny just smiled and kept reading.

“Of course, you’re free to use any materials and talk quietly,” Karen said, waiting for the laughter to die down. ”But as you all know from last year”—her tone carried a hint of sarcasm—”Dr. Wenword uses this test to tailor your exam content. If today’s test goes better than your actual knowledge, it’ll only make things harder for you. If it goes too poorly, your place here might be reconsidered.”

Everyone quickly put their things away and got to work.

The test was simple—much easier than the transfer exam—so I answered everything without much trouble. On the last page, there were bonus questions. I was pretty sure they weren’t meant to be bonuses for me.

One of the final essay questions on the bonus page was: “When is it appropriate to consume alcohol?”

I nearly laughed out loud—but that would’ve caught Jenny’s attention.

I glanced at her with a smile, but she was completely absorbed in her book. Occasionally, one of the girls would get up and update the time on the board. Every time that happened, several of the guys stopped writing just to stare at them.

We were about halfway through the test when Karen exchanged a few quiet words with Jenny, stood up, updated the time on the board, and quietly left the room with a folder in hand. My girlfriend kept reading.

I had finished long ago, but I couldn’t turn in my test until everyone else did. I was lying over the desk, trying not to be noticeable. When time was up, Jenny stood and cleared her throat.

“Time’s up,” Jenny said aloud. I was still lying low. ”Please bring your tests to the desk.”

Students began standing and placing their papers on the desk before heading out of the room.

“Dave,” I called as he got up. ”Could you hand mine in too?”

“Sure,” he said. I slipped my test under his and crawled back under the desk. I started sneaking out, crouching between the rows of seats toward the exit, while my roommates stared at me in confusion.

“I’m going down to talk to her,” Tom said confidently and headed toward Jenny’s desk.

He made a show of walking up to her and started chatting. I used the distraction to stand up and slip out with the crowd. Dave dropped off both our tests on Jenny’s desk.

I waited in the hallway, pressed against a column, until Jenny came out of the classroom and headed toward one of the exits. It was my lunch break, so I went to the cafeteria and joined my roommates.

“Thanks for the cap,” I said, handing it back to Dave.

“I talked to Mandy,” Tom said proudly.

“Who’s Mandy?” I asked. The others were listening too.

“Oh, right,” he said smugly. ”You guys don’t know. She’s his granddaughter—Mandy Wenword.” I nearly burst out laughing.

“That’s her name?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Tom nodded. ”When I met her at the gym last year, I didn’t know her last name—just Mandy.”

“Got it,” I replied with a straight face.

I finished eating and headed to my next lecture. I didn’t see Uncle Steve or Jenny again that day.

On Sunday, we had lunch at my place. Luckily, after swimming, we both had a good appetite. In the afternoon, we went to his place to play video games.“When will the pool be finished here? Do you know?” Brian asked.“Jenny said in the fall when we come back,” I said. “Unfortunately, I’ll have to spend a day in the gym.”“I won’t even ask,” he laughed. “She’s definitely going to torture you.”By the time I got home, Jenny had already arrived and was unpacking.“I missed you,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “How did the meeting go?”“Well,” she said. “They signed the contract.”“What contract?” I asked, curious.

“Yeah, Jenny always sees right through me,” I admitted.“I know, son,” he smiled. “Good luck. I can’t help you—this is between the two of you.” He laughed.“You bet on this too?” Amber asked, sounding exasperated.“She said she’d figure it out,” I muttered, feeling slightly offended. “You don’t think I’m just going to let it go, do you?”“You’re the boss,” Amber rolled her eyes, while our parents laughed.“Is it already sized?” I asked as I held the box. I remembered correctly—it was a stunning ring.“Yes, bro,” Amber smiled. “Dad asked me for one of those bijou rings she wears in photos, so I knew about it—Mom was the only one who didn’t.”

“Unfortunately, it was all for nothing,” I said, disappointed. “It’s no longer in the store, so there’s nothing to show. Does Jenny know you’re here?” I asked.“No,” Dr. Cox replied. “Mickey is at his friend’s place, and Jane left before us.”“I’m sorry about the ring, Jay,” Mrs. Julie said.“Good thing I pay attention to details too—not just Janie,” Dr. Cox laughed, making everyone look at him.“Adam,” Dad chuckled, “I think you should stop teasing them before they kill you tonight.”“Andrew? Adam?” Both mothers asked at the same time.“Ladies,” Dr. Cox said with a smile, reaching into his inner pocket and placing a blue heart-shaped box on the table. &ldquo

The next day, Dad drove us to the apartment, and I showed them around.“It’s not huge, but it’s perfect for the two of us. Thank you,” I said once we settled in the living room.“I see your girlfriend has made it feel like home,” Mom said, looking around.“Yeah, she’s slowly unpacking everything. Will the rent be covered over the summer too?” I asked, since we hadn’t discussed it yet.“As far as I know, it was leased for several years. Adam handled the paperwork,” Dad said.“If no one’s hungry yet,” Dad continued, “we could head to the store.”“Finally, I get to see my own shop,” Amber said excitedly.“Sis,” I said, “I’ve already been inside, but they

On Friday, Jenny drove home after school, pulling into my parents’ driveway just before dinner. The scent of home-cooked food drifted through the open windows, and as she stepped inside, the family was already gathered, waiting with expectant smiles.“Come in,” Brad said, opening the door. “Dinner’s just about ready.”“Good evening,” Jenny greeted everyone and sat across from me at the table—her usual spot. She seemed a little nervous, which was unusual for her lately.“Everything okay, dear?” Dad noticed.“Messyhair said everyone’s coming to visit our apartment tomorrow, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to be there,” she blurted out.“No problem, dear,” Mom reassured her. “Yes, I could only make time now.” So she took resp

I should’ve looked away. Should’ve stood up and left the room. But I couldn’t. She danced like temptation incarnate—teasing, graceful, slow. When she peeled back her sweatshirt and revealed the black corset beneath, I stood.I crossed to her in two strides, hands slipping around her waist.“What do you think you’re doing?” she giggled as I eased her down onto the couch.I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My fingers were already tugging at her tracksuit, breath shallow. I nearly tore the fabric from her—and my own clothes too—blinded by how much I needed her. She laughed softly, her skin warm under my hands, her smile daring me to break every rule we’d set.“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked again, this time breathlessly, already reacting to my kisses.

“I have a proposal,” I said. “If, after we’re both back at university, we ever run into each other again—and neither of us is in a relationship—then we go on a date. Just one. If either of us is taken, the deal’s off.”

The next day, Jenny and I met at Tony’s—just like we had at the start of summer. I arrived early, and Tony was already grilling two burgers by the time Jenny walked in. Her sun-kissed skin glowed against the light, flowing summer dress she wore. Her blue eyes practic
