On Monday morning, we headed to school, but I knew that during the week, I’d only see her in the evenings because of the shop.

“Where were you this weekend, Jay?” Phil asked before class.

“With my girlfriend.”

“You got a girlfriend pretty fast,” he laughed.

“Luckily, that’s never been a problem,” I laughed. I didn’t feel like telling them who she was.

Until midweek, our evenings together at her place were all we had. Once Paul returned, I usually slept at the dorm. A few more months, and we’d be together every day anyway.

On Friday, after school, I drove us home—we took one car, so we had time to talk.

“Babe,” I started, “we should stop by Tony’s on the way home.”

“Tony’s, Messyhair?” she asked, surprised. “Why do we need burgers tonight?”

“I want everyone to know that the woman who recently threw her drink at me—is now my girlfriend,” I said with a wink.

“So basically, you want to fix your image,” she laughed. “I don’t have much time, but we can grab a dessert. And after dinner, come over—Grandpa wants to talk to you. He mentioned it when we had lunch together.”

“He didn’t say what about?” I asked. “I hope he’s not planning to replace me.”

“I don’t think it’s anything like that. He actually seemed cheerful,” Jenny said.

I turned off the highway straight to Tony’s, holding Jenny’s hand as we walked inside. It was Friday afternoon, so the place was packed. As soon as we entered, hand in hand, the chatter quieted for a moment. Tony rushed over from behind the counter—there were no free tables.

“Beautiful,” he grinned at Jenny. “Blink twice if you’re a hostage.”

“I’d blink,” Jenny laughed, “but even that’s forbidden.”

“You gave him another chance?” Tony asked. Jenny just smiled and nodded.

“We’ll see if he deserves it,” she glanced at me, gently turned my face toward hers, and gave me a soft kiss on the lips. A few people started clapping.

“You’re not even going to ask if I’m a hostage?” I teased Tony.

“If you are, you wouldn’t want to escape anyway,” Tony teased back.

“That’s true,” I laughed. Jenny just smiled at me.

Tony wanted to find us a table, but Jenny ordered two desserts to go instead. After saying our goodbyes, I dropped her off at her house and drove home.

I arrived before dinner.

“You’re here?” I greeted Amber.

“Brad’s traveling, so I came home,” she said, clearly happy.

“Everything good with you two?” she asked over dinner. “Did she like the gift?”

“Finally, she was in my arms again last weekend,” I smiled. “She liked it—once we clarified that it wasn’t a ring. She was terrified I was proposing.”

“Give her time,” Dad said. “She loves you a lot—she’s just still scared because of last year.”

“I know, she told me,” I smiled.

“Dad,” I said, and he glanced at me.

“After Amber’s wedding, I’d like to move out of the dorm.”

“Well, son, this school is much cheaper, so it might be doable,” Dad said.

“What’s wrong with the dorm?” Mom asked.

“Nothing, I just want a roommate who doesn’t snore,” I smiled.

“I’ll talk to Adam,” Dad said with a grin. “We’ll see what we can do.”

“Thanks.”

After dinner, I went to Uncle Steve’s place. The family was expecting Daniel and his girlfriend.

“Come in, John,” Dr. Cox greeted me. “Who are you here to see?” he asked cheerfully.

“Uncle Steve,” I said, sitting down in the living room.

I greeted Mickey, and Jenny smiled at me from the kitchen, tapping her nose playfully.

“Ah, my apprentice,” Uncle Steve said as he walked in from the garden and sat beside me on the couch.

“My boss,” he nodded toward Mrs. Julie, who just smiled at him. “She’s letting me do house calls on weekends sometimes. For now, it’s just one weekend a month,” he explained. “Would you like to join me?”

“I’d love to, thank you.” That was good news—I was excited.

“But on those weekends, your personal life will have to take a backseat. We start early, finish late, but I’ll make sure you get back to the dorm on Sunday. Is that okay?”

“Your granddaughter is understanding,” I grinned.

“Janie, Julie,” the old man suddenly called out. “Could you come here for a second?”

Jenny and her mom walked over, followed by Dr. Cox and Mickey.

“Johnny will be spending the house-call weekends with me. Does that work for everyone?” he asked.

“Of course, I’ll plan around it,” Jenny said cheerfully, tapping her nose again.

“You were right—my girls really are perfect,” he laughed, kissing Julie and Jenny on the forehead.

We barely slept that night, and even during the day, we spent all our time together. But for dinner, she dressed beautifully, wearing her old green-and-silver dress. I had reserved a table at an Asian restaurant on the edge of the park near us. Since the weather was nice and the distance was short, we walked.“Do you like Brian and Mayoko’s apartment?” I asked as we strolled.“I do,” she said. “It’s not a cheap area, but Paul and Brian can afford it.”“Would you live here with me?” I asked, watching her reaction.“W-with you?” she asked, surprised. “I just officially became your girlfriend,” she laughed.“Not now,” I said. “In the future.”“That’s still far off,” she smiled.

Slowly, my life at university settled into a rhythm.Daryl and Aaron found out I transferred here, and they were happy about it. I spent several evenings a week at my girlfriend’s place, swam in the mornings, met up with our friends weekly, and once a month, I went home to do house calls with Uncle Steve. Jenny would either translate or study, but she always came home with me. After she and Adam finished negotiations, she only took on interpreting jobs in rare cases.I was balanced and happy, and my girlfriend shone more brightly each day. She was finally starting to believe that I truly loved her. I was sure plenty of people tried to win her over, but I trusted her completely. At university, no one knew I was Uncle Steve’s apprentice, but in every lecture, I had to be able to answer at least one of his personalized questions.“Are we going to the game tomorrow?” Da

On Friday evening, I went to my girlfriend’s place for an early dinner. She had set the table and prepared a meal, looking just as stunning as she had every other day that week.I handed her the flowers I’d brought, kissed her after slipping off my shoes, and she smiled.“Sit down,” she said, gesturing toward the dining table.“Babe.” I grinned as she started serving, but I didn’t sit. “You do realize that dinner doesn’t necessarily mean dinner?” I laughed.“I thought you were hungry,” she said, cheeks heating as I wrapped my arms around her from behind.“Put everything in the fridge,” I murmured, trailing slow kisses up her neck. “We won’t be eating for a while. I’m craving something else more.”Within minutes, the table was cleared. We kissed breathlessly as I led her to the bedroom. She unbuttoned my shirt while I tugged at hers. I pushed her skirt down impatiently, my hands greedy, while she slipped out gracefully, smirking at my rush. When we reached her bed, I laid her down and

The following week, I only called Jenny late Monday night after she had closed the shop, and we set up another date for Tuesday. According to her, the shop had opened successfully, and Adam had finalized the negotiations. At least we wouldn’t have to hear about Benoit anymore. On Tuesday evening, we met in the park—it wasn’t far for either of us. She was wearing a short skirt again, paired with boots, but this time, her top was even more revealing.“Babe,” I said after she kissed me, “are you trying to drive me crazy with these outfits?” I laughed.“Is it working?” she asked with a mischievous smile.“Oh, absolutely,” I said. “I’m losing my mind over you.”“Good,” she laughed. Our date wasn’t particularly eventful—we mostly talked and kissed on a secluded bench. We agreed to meet there every afternoon. The next day, everyone arrived early for Uncle Steve’s class. I took the same seat as last week—I no longer felt the need to sit lower. As soon as he walked in, the room fell silent.“We

We walked back through the park, and I refused to let go of her hand. It was already dusk, and the streetlights cast a warm glow over the path.“Why have you been so uncertain lately?” I asked as we walked.“Because I’m confused,” she admitted quietly. “I hoped you wouldn’t stay at that faraway university—it was a bad idea even without considering me,” she said in her beloved know-it-all tone. “But I have no idea what you want from me. If you had told me everything at the end of summer, we wouldn’t have had to set all those rules, and I wouldn’t have been so flustered at Brian’s place.”“I love that I can still make you flustered,” I said, stopping under a large tree.I leaned against the trunk and gently pulled her close. I lifted her chin so she would look at me.“I never stopped loving you,” I said, losing myself in her beau

The motorboat started. I had never skied before and had no idea if that even mattered, but staying upright was harder than I expected. I glanced sideways to see how Jenny was doing—and that was the moment I lost my balance and wiped out.“Dude,” Brian greeted me as I climbed out of the water, “if y
