LOGINJenny and I planned it so that we could return home a few days before my sister’s wedding, though we weren’t much needed in the preparations.
“I’ve never seen the little girl this happy,” Dad said at dinner the night before the wedding.
“Yes,” Amber agreed. “Alberto loves photographing her, but you look great too.”
“Thanks, though I hope she’ll be even happier next week.”
“My son?” Mom asked. “You could share your plan.”
“Pay attention to the details,” I grinned. “Relax,” I added, “I’m not going to propose. That’s not a public event for her.”
“We know—you don’t even have a ring,” Amber laughed.
The next morning, our house was a madhouse. Cathy arrived to help Amber, along with a makeup artist and a hairstylist. They all left with Mom to get ready at the reserved hotel, leaving just Dad and me behind. Before heading out, I tidied myself up—after all, I was going to be the best man.
“I’m proud of you,” Dad said, handing me the apartment keys.
“Thanks,” I replied. “I already saw it—it looks beautiful.”
“I hope she likes it too,” he said, patting my shoulder.
“She doesn’t suspect anything, does she?” I asked.
“As far as I know, no. Only Daniel knows—Mickey doesn’t,” Dad chuckled.
By the time we arrived at the venue, guests were already milling about. Jenny and her entire family were invited, as were all my friends and Brian’s parents. I greeted my friends and Brad’s excited family.
Brad’s father was a tall, slender man with brown hair streaked with gray, while his mother was of medium height, with brown hair and brown eyes. There was quite an age gap between Brad and his sister—about the same as between Amber and me. His sister had gained some weight after having two young children. She was a tall, curvy woman with short brown hair, wearing a deep blue, strappy, floor-length dress that matched my shirt. Her husband was a large, black-haired, bespectacled man with a friendly smile, dressed in a suit and shirt similar to mine. Their younger daughter had black hair, while the older one had brown hair. Both had long, beautifully brushed hair adorned with bows. They wore matching blue dresses, and their mother kept a watchful eye on their every move.
The hotel was located in the seaside part of the city. It wasn’t large—more like a spacious villa. If it had been a multi-story building, the upper floors would have had a view of the sea. Amber and Brad had spent their first weekend together here, so my sister chose this location for the wedding.
To the left of the entrance were four or five rooms, while to the right was a large open space where tables had been arranged in a comb-like pattern. Along the walls were a dessert counter and a small stage for the DJ. The dance floor was set up in front of the tables.
The dominant colors were blue and white, even in the floral arrangements. Small blue flowers filled the vases.
The ceremony was to take place at the back of the garden. Mom was already arranging the chairs so that everyone would have a clear view of the couple seated on a wooden platform by the hedge. The chairs were adorned with blue ribbons, and tiny flowers lined the aisle. Blue-and-white floral garlands decorated the platform and the steps leading up to it.
I was Amber’s best man, meaning I would be seated on the platform, right behind my sister. Our mothers would sit among the guests, facing the couple. Brad’s sister was his best woman—she was busy wiping down the little girls’ dresses after a minor mishap.
“Everything is ready,” Paul said as he approached with Susy.
“Thank you,” I said, shaking his hand and giving Susy a kiss on the cheek.
Jenny arrived, smiling. She touched her nose and disappeared into Amber’s room.
I waited. Dad eventually vanished into my sister’s room as well. The guests, following Mom’s and last year’s master of ceremonies’ cues, slowly took their seats.
The same master of ceremonies was here today as the one who directed Mrs. Julie’s wedding—a tall, thin, balding guy, roughly the same age as my sister, who I’m pretty sure wore the same suit as at the other wedding. He hasn’t become any more likable this year.
When Mom signaled that we were starting, the guests were already seated. I walked to the entrance, where Amber would make her entrance.
Becca and Brad’s nieces stood at the front, all dressed in matching blue dresses. Jenny appeared with Cathy and Sarah.
On Sunday, we had lunch at my place. Luckily, after swimming, we both had a good appetite. In the afternoon, we went to his place to play video games.“When will the pool be finished here? Do you know?” Brian asked.“Jenny said in the fall when we come back,” I said. “Unfortunately, I’ll have to spend a day in the gym.”“I won’t even ask,” he laughed. “She’s definitely going to torture you.”By the time I got home, Jenny had already arrived and was unpacking.“I missed you,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “How did the meeting go?”“Well,” she said. “They signed the contract.”“What contract?” I asked, curious.
“Yeah, Jenny always sees right through me,” I admitted.“I know, son,” he smiled. “Good luck. I can’t help you—this is between the two of you.” He laughed.“You bet on this too?” Amber asked, sounding exasperated.“She said she’d figure it out,” I muttered, feeling slightly offended. “You don’t think I’m just going to let it go, do you?”“You’re the boss,” Amber rolled her eyes, while our parents laughed.“Is it already sized?” I asked as I held the box. I remembered correctly—it was a stunning ring.“Yes, bro,” Amber smiled. “Dad asked me for one of those bijou rings she wears in photos, so I knew about it—Mom was the only one who didn’t.”
“Unfortunately, it was all for nothing,” I said, disappointed. “It’s no longer in the store, so there’s nothing to show. Does Jenny know you’re here?” I asked.“No,” Dr. Cox replied. “Mickey is at his friend’s place, and Jane left before us.”“I’m sorry about the ring, Jay,” Mrs. Julie said.“Good thing I pay attention to details too—not just Janie,” Dr. Cox laughed, making everyone look at him.“Adam,” Dad chuckled, “I think you should stop teasing them before they kill you tonight.”“Andrew? Adam?” Both mothers asked at the same time.“Ladies,” Dr. Cox said with a smile, reaching into his inner pocket and placing a blue heart-shaped box on the table. &ldquo
The next day, Dad drove us to the apartment, and I showed them around.“It’s not huge, but it’s perfect for the two of us. Thank you,” I said once we settled in the living room.“I see your girlfriend has made it feel like home,” Mom said, looking around.“Yeah, she’s slowly unpacking everything. Will the rent be covered over the summer too?” I asked, since we hadn’t discussed it yet.“As far as I know, it was leased for several years. Adam handled the paperwork,” Dad said.“If no one’s hungry yet,” Dad continued, “we could head to the store.”“Finally, I get to see my own shop,” Amber said excitedly.“Sis,” I said, “I’ve already been inside, but they
On Friday, Jenny drove home after school, pulling into my parents’ driveway just before dinner. The scent of home-cooked food drifted through the open windows, and as she stepped inside, the family was already gathered, waiting with expectant smiles.“Come in,” Brad said, opening the door. “Dinner’s just about ready.”“Good evening,” Jenny greeted everyone and sat across from me at the table—her usual spot. She seemed a little nervous, which was unusual for her lately.“Everything okay, dear?” Dad noticed.“Messyhair said everyone’s coming to visit our apartment tomorrow, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to be there,” she blurted out.“No problem, dear,” Mom reassured her. “Yes, I could only make time now.” So she took resp
I should’ve looked away. Should’ve stood up and left the room. But I couldn’t. She danced like temptation incarnate—teasing, graceful, slow. When she peeled back her sweatshirt and revealed the black corset beneath, I stood.I crossed to her in two strides, hands slipping around her waist.“What do you think you’re doing?” she giggled as I eased her down onto the couch.I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My fingers were already tugging at her tracksuit, breath shallow. I nearly tore the fabric from her—and my own clothes too—blinded by how much I needed her. She laughed softly, her skin warm under my hands, her smile daring me to break every rule we’d set.“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked again, this time breathlessly, already reacting to my kisses.
“I couldn’t be with someone who wasn’t,” she replied, regaining her confidence. She was calm again.“And what exactly makes him a real man?” I raised my voice, unable to hold back the surge of maddening jealousy.“A real man isn’t just a man in bed,” she said, clearly unaware she’d just handed me t
It was late when I pulled into the driveway next to her little red car. She was locking the front door, wearing a loose sweatshirt and sweatpants, her coat unzipped—clearly heading out. Her hair was pinned up messily.“Hey,” I said behind her.“Uncle Steve’s not home,” she replied without turning a
I wandered around for a while, chatting with Brian, who gave me the rundown on every couple that showed up. Then Daniel arrived. He wore a green shirt and black pants. Paul greeted him warmly. His light blond hair was still cropped short—he hadn’t changed a bit.“Go say hi,” Brian nudged me, then l
I looked over—she had her back to me and hadn’t noticed us. She was with three men and a woman, translating. She wore a modest gray suit but still looked incredible. Her new hairstyle was pinned up, though that one stubborn strand still curled loose at the side. I tried not to stare. I failed.“She
