CHAPTER 42: SO NEAR YET SO FAR
William had sat in his car for a few minutes after he left Jess’s apartment. He had desperately wanted to go back and talk some sense into her but he knew she needed time. As he finally convinced himself to leave, he saw Pete walking towards the lift carrying a shopping bag. He couldn't hide his disgust as he remembered how vicious this man could get. He had seen photos of him beating up people who had stolen from him, and he was rumored to be even more cruel to anyone who crossed him. Jess had assured William that they had separated, but she was not ready to be with him because she feared his family. William watched Pete enter the lift and he felt a sinking feeling enveloping him. As Pete was pulling out of the parking lot, William was driving in. He had been informed of Jess’s whereabouts by his informant and he had rushed to the hospital immediately after the meeting ended. He rushed into the hospital and was informed that he only had fifteen minutes before the visiting hour was over. He rushed to Jess’s room but he didn’t find her there. None of the nurses seemed to know where she was until one nurse directed him to Mr. Harris's room. He knocked gently and let himself in. He didn’t know which sight was more sad.
