Chapter 4

Author: Sixteen Strokes
Half an hour later, the bathroom door was slammed open.

Mom burst inside and grabbed me viciously by the ear.

She dragged me out and shoved me into the center of the room.

My foot slipped and I hit the floor in a thump.

Stars exploded across my vision.

The spilled red wine on the ground coated my clothes in dark, hideous stains, leaving me in total disarray.

Mom pulled a diagnostic report for severe depression from her pocket and threw it in my face.

“Look at this!

“Haven’t you always held a grudge over us treating Daisy better? This is why!

“Playing pranks on you was to help lighten her mood. Not one of us can be happy while Daisy’s miserable.”Beside Mom, Daisy’s eyes were already brimming with hot tears.

“Please, she doesn’t need to know.

“She’ll feel burdened by it.

“It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have played jokes on her… To be honest, when she said she wanted to break off our friendship just now, my heart almost stopped.”

Bryan immediately turned to her with concern, checking to make sure she wasn’t about to collapse from a heart attack.

I let out a bitter laugh.

In order to make Daisy happy, they made a sport out of pranking me, watching me run around in circles like some circus animal. Was that really so funny?

“Depression doesn’t work like that, Daisy.”

I stepped forward and, for the first time in front of everyone, peeled back the watch strap on my left wrist.

Layers of raised, pale scar tissue were exposed.

“Depression is not something you just talk about. Why don’t you show everyone your proof?”

A brutal blow struck my face.

The sheer force of it made even Mom take half a step back in shock.

A violent ringing tore through my left ear, yet no tears came to my eyes.

Harry pointed a finger at me, his voice raw with fury:

“Wretched thing, you’re faking scars now!

“Which makeup artist did you hire to do those? They don’t even look real!”

Bryan’s friends began whispering snidely among themselves, and one of them even snapped a photo and posted it online.

“Idea for your next novel: girl paints fake scars to win family’s attention.”

In an instant, the post racked up twenty-five threads of hateful comments.

A flash of smug triumph gleamed in the depths of Daisy’s eyes.

Yet she buried it almost instantly.

She stepped forward with a display of concern, “Violet, even if no one else believes you, I do. Please stop acting so unhinged, okay?

“Come, apologize to your parents and brother.

“And to Bryan and his friends too—everyone came over to have fun, not for a scene.”

I smiled.

I swept my gaze across every face in the room.

“What about you all? When are you gonna give me the apology you’ve owed me for eighteen years?”

Mom stared at me in disbelief, her neck flushing red with rage.

“Violet Alder! How dare—”

Leaving her sentence half-finished, she seized a vase from the nearby table and hurled it at me.

I dodged the throw and bolted out of that house without looking back once.

After landing safely in Crestview, I took a page out of their book and sent a short text to the family group chat: “Just kidding earlier.”

Mom, Dad, and Harry all sat staring at the message, falling into a confused silence.

What on earth was the joke?

Early next morning, sick with worry, they rushed to the campus to look for me.

Yet after checking the roster and making a few calls, the guard turned to them with a confused frown:

“There’s no freshman named Violet Alder.”

Mom shook her head frantically, shouting:

“How is that possible? We all came here just yesterday! She even left her luggage here with you!”

The guard slapped his forehead as realization struck him.

Then he shook his head with a sigh of pity.

“That girl, she withdrew her enrollment yesterday.”

“Wh… What?”

Mom and Dad exchanged horrified looks, then collapsed on the pavement as their legs gave out under them.

As the surrounding crowd grew larger, I pulled them into a nearby empty classroom. Before I could open my mouth, Bryan’s phone call came ringing through to Harry’s cell.I couldn’t hear what they were talking about. In an instant, Harry’s expression shifted drastically.“What? Daisy forged her depression diagnosis?”That caused my parents’ faces to turn several shades paler. They didn’t dare to cast a single glance in my direction.Harry ended the call and lifted his eyes, looking at me hesitantly.“Bryan said… he located your depression diagnosis at the hospital, but there was none for Daisy.”A scoff escaped me.Subconsciously, I put my hand over the scars on my left wrist.Even though they were concealed beneath the thick watch strap, a dull pain still thrummed in my chest whenever I thought of how I got them.“Violet, I’m sorry.“I failed you as a brother.”His eyes were rimmed with crimson now.And my parents had shed genuine tears.“Violet, come home. Let us take care of you.“If

Ever since learning of my dropout, Mom and Dad had been too sick to leave their bed.A crowd of relatives and acquaintances converged on them with barely concealed ridicule.Openly and discreetly, everyone pointed fingers, blaming them for failing to discipline their daughter.Yet the moment Harry brought home the news that I had secured a full scholarship as an undergraduate at Crestview University, my parents recovered instantaneously.“Yes, yes, that’s our girl!”“Oh, she has always been so self-driven since she was a little girl. We barely had to lift a finger…”Mom and Dad were busy brag-calling relatives from out of town when Harry returned home.Mom craned her neck to look past his shoulder. “Where’s Violet?”Harry bit down hard on his lip, letting out a heavy sigh.“I couldn’t convince her to come back.“She… doesn’t want to see us.”“How is that possible?”Mom slammed the phone down, cutting short the call as panic seized her.“She’s always been a sweet little girl ever since

Harry suddenly lunged forward and grabbed me by the arm.He gripped me with immense force, as if terrified I would vanish into thin air if he let go.“Violet, why did you drop out without saying a single word?”His eyes were rimmed with red, his voice carrying a distinct choke of emotion.I stared back at him with a puzzled expression.“What are you doing here?”Seemingly frightened by the sheer coldness in my eyes, he loosened his grip.“I… I didn’t mean to sound harsh. It’s just… your joke went too far. You scared Mom, Dad, and me half to death.”I scratched my head, tilting my chin slightly.“Did it though?“When you people played jokes on me in the past, none of you cared how I would feel.”Daisy rushed forward, tugging gently on my sleeve, playing the peacemaker as she always had.“Come on, stop being mad at us.“It was just a harmless joke—who knew you’d take it so seriously?”I yanked my arm free, flinging her hand off me.“Let me spell it out once more for you: if I don’t find

After completing my matriculation, I managed to scrape by on my earlier meager savings.I visited every single restaurant in the vicinity before finally finding one willing to take me on.My parents earned tens of millions a year, yet I was dead broke. The pocket money they gave Daisy amounted to nearly a hundred grand a year.No such treatment for me.“You can’t handle money—you’ll be spoilt by it. It’s for your own good we’re giving you little.”So when Daisy and Bryan went skiing in the winter, all I could do was trail behind them as their unpaid photographer. After Harry finished his master’s, Mom and Dad had rewarded him with a brand-new Maybach.Yet when I had wanted a dress costing 500 bucks for my birthday, they had called me greedy for even asking.Just to turn around and get Daisy the exact same dress. It took me far too long to realize the truth. That was why I had spent years being miserable beside my so-called family.“Wow, what an incredible man! Before long, Daisy and Bryan hurried over. They had just finished eating, some dried sauce still sticking to the corners of their mouths.“Harry, don’t panic.“I know Violet. She must think we picked on her yesterday. This is her throwing a fit to get back at us.”Daisy said as she licked the sauce off her lip, flashing a sweet smile at Harry.Bryan knitted his brows, his chiseled face coated in exasperation.“All we did was make her run a couple of extra trips—is it really worth making such a massive scene over? I just checked, and the nerve of her, she actually blocked me.”Daisy nodded rapidly.“She blocked me too.”Perplexed, Harry pulled out his own phone and tentatively dialed my number.Without surprise:“The number you are dialing is currently unavailable…”He let out a scoff. His handsome brow arched upward.“What a brat.“You better hope I don’t track you down, or I’m gonna give you a lesson you’ll never—”His threat ground to a sudden halt the moment he opened an email sent

“What kinda sick joke is this? She clearly completed her enrollment yesterday.”Harry knitted his brows, his tone thoroughly hostile.“You’re just a low-level security guard—what could you possibly know? We wanna talk to the student affairs office!”Dad barked out his order. This arrogant attitude instantly infuriated the elderly guard, who slammed his palm hard against the desk.He pulled up yesterday’s surveillance footage right in front of them.“See for yourselves! She went in there yesterday and requested to withdraw her enrollment—it’s clear as day here.“This university is a premier institution, the dream sanctuary for countless students. We’ve barely had any voluntary withdrawals in a decade. I would be hard-pressed not to remember her.”Mom clutched her chest, clearly shaken to her core by this sudden nightmare of news. The guard shot them a cold glare, huffing out two sharp breaths.“When that young lady came in here to drop off her bags yesterday, she was exceptionally polit
