Chapter 6

Author: Liora Z
"You really do care," I scoffed. "Is that why you pushed me overboard?"

She didn't even flinch. "So what if you know? Evan will never believe you."

She was right. If I told him, he’d just say, 'Sofia would never do that. Stop slandering her.'

My silence seemed to bore her. She pulled something from her pocket. A small, silver handgun. A Beretta Bobcat, made for women.

"Evan said things are dangerous. He told me to carry this for protection." She held it in her palm like a jewel. My eyes froze on it.

On the mother-of-pearl grip, a name was engraved in elegant script: Sofia.

She held the gun out for me to see better. "Beautiful, isn't it? Evan had it custom-made. He said it suits me."

I couldn't look away.

Because after the first time we slept together, Evan had given me the exact same one.

'For protection,' he'd said. 'I don't want you turning up dead on me.'

I was naive enough to think he cared.

I remembered my name, engraved on that same grip.

I’d left the gun on his table when I

I felt nothing but the urge to end this circus. But to my surprise, Julian met Evan’s threatening gaze. "Rachel doesn't belong to anyone," he said firmly. "And whoever you are, you should respect her choice."That did it. Evan waved a hand at his men. "Throw this punk out. As for Rachel…""Godfather!"Luca strode in, his face grim, and stepped between us. "Godfather, not even you have the right to treat my sister and her friend this way.""What's more," Luca said, pulling out a document, "I have permission from the old Godfather. Rachel is no longer part of the Blackthorn family.""Brother?" I stared at him, shocked. He gave me a reassuring smile. "I told you I had your back.""No right?" Evan laughed, a low, dangerous sound. "So what? Family or not, she's my woman. That's a fact.""Is it?" Luca shot back, unafraid. "Then where's your proof, Godfather?"Evan was silent.Luca's voice boomed. "By family tradition, a woman of the family bears the Blackthorn crest below her right shoulder

"Why did you run?"He stepped inside, shutting the door behind him. "Why didn't you answer my calls? Why did you cut all ties?""And your hair…" His eyes dropped to my short hair. "Who told you to cut it?"I didn't answer. "That's none of your business, Godfather.""Godfather?" He let out a low, disbelieving laugh. "Why so formal? That's not what you used to call me."He used to let me call him Evan. In bed. When he needed me to stitch him up.I took a step back. "You told me to find a good man and settle down. I'm about to go on a date," I said, my voice calm. "I'm just following your orders."He flinched, as if I'd struck him. "I was just…""Or were you hoping to introduce someone yourself?" I cut him off.He looked lost, unable to understand why the woman who once obeyed his every command had changed."Are you still angry about Sofia?" he finally landed on. "I explained—""No, you misunderstand," I interrupted, my voice sincere. "I'm not angry. I honestly think you're perfect for ea

"What is this?"Luca stared at me, then at Evan, his eyes wide with confusion. "Rachel, you two…"Evan's jaw tightened. He took a step forward, reaching for my wrist.I pulled my hand back, not flinching at the rage on his face."Godfather, I don't think there's anything between us. Nothing more than a Godfather and his underling."His face twisted with rage. He glared at me like he wanted to tear me limb from limb."You…" he hissed through his teeth."Ah—"A soft gasp cut him off.Sofia swayed, her face pale. She pressed a hand to her forehead, then collapsed.Evan spun instinctively, catching her in a practiced move."Sofia!" he yelled, his voice tight with worry as he gently tapped her cheek.Just like that, all eyes were on the tragic couple. In his arms, Sofia’s eyes fluttered open, tears clinging to her lashes."Evan, I’m so dizzy… It must be from the fall…"Evan immediately swept her up into his arms, the movement smooth and protective. But as he passed me, he stopped. He ordere

The next day was the family’s yacht party. The sea breeze was thick with the scent of salt and money. The deck was a sea of designer clothes and champagne flutes as men discussed guns, territory, and deals.Sofia was in her element today, a social butterfly flitting between Evan and the various capos. She knew how to play her cards.“Evan, I want to go to the bow and feel the wind, just like… just like when your brother was still alive.”She was always dropping his dead brother into conversation. Evan’s brother was his greatest source of pain and guilt. As expected, he couldn’t refuse her.I stood by the railing, watching them walk to the front of the yacht, Evan gallantly draping his suit jacket over her shoulders. That’s when the chaos started.Someone screamed—they’d spotted a rival family’s boat approaching. The party instantly devolved into panic. Bodyguards drew their guns, forming a perimeter around the bosses. The crowd surged, shoving and pushing.Someone slammed into me. I st

The Blackthorn family dinner was, as always, both lavish and suffocating.I wore a conservative black gown, my arm linked with my brother Luca’s, staying quietly by his side.“You seem different tonight, Rachel,” Luca murmured. “You’re usually… on edge.”He was right. On edge.Because my eyes were always chasing one person across the room.Tonight, I hadn’t even glanced toward the head table.Evan Blackthorn was holding court, and beside him, in a pristine white evening gown, was Sofia Rossi. They looked like a perfect couple.Never mind that she was his brother’s widow. In our world, power is everything. Nobody cared about the details.I could hear the low hum of approval around them.“Evan, this must be your brother’s widow? A true beauty,” said the head of an allied family, raising his glass.A faint smile touched Evan’s lips.“Yes, this is Sofia.”The portly man turned to her. “Mrs. Rossi, an honor. A toast to you.”Sofia looked flustered, shrinking back behind Evan almost instinct
