JANICE

FOUR YEARS AGO

I was hot.

Today was a fucking hot day.

The afternoon sun filtered softly through the dorm window, casting this warm glow over the tangled sheets. I was sprawled on my stomach across the table, my laptop open in front of me, typing furiously on my part of the group project the lecturer had graciously given to us just yesterday. My hair was a mess, and I was wearing one of Noel’s old hoodies that still smelled like him.

Like sandalwood and mint.

Mila was lying beside me on

  • Just One Night to Own Me, Daddies   Uncle-niece date

CALDER“Oh, the steakhouse will be the best place ever to meet. Thank you, Uncle Calder,” Mila had said during the call, after I invited her. A little lit of fooling around, just like we used to, when she was younger and her father had all these rules for her.No staying up beyond eight pm.No eating of red meat.No ice cream.Lucian and Aiden used to be so mad when she came back from school, eating happily at the ice cream I got for her. We were her parents, acting as both mother and father, because she did not have a mother and her father had two friends. Simple, enough, right? It was anything but.Mila was always a child no one could please. She wanted everything and anything, and I was the only one who always wanted to give it to her. Aiden stopped inviting me to his house at one point. But one must do all he could to ensure he remained the favorite uncle, right? The steakhouse was one of those old-school places with dark wood paneling, soft amber lighting, and waiters who moved l

  • Just One Night to Own Me, Daddies   Get out of my apartment

JANICEAiden had his body pressed against mine, his hand loose around my throat once more, his breath hot against my lips. The wall was cold against my back. One way or another, Aiden had placed me in this position again. My heart was pounding so hard I was pretty sure Aiden could feel it.I had told him every single thing that had happened. From the day I met his daughter to the day I met my ex. The way Noel had smiled at me like I was the only girl in the room, had courted me with devotion and love and we had a year of laughter and promises. I told him about the trip home to check on Nancy and how I came back early, ready to surprise two important people in my life.“And she was riding him, moaning his name like she owned him,” I sneered at him. “Can you imagine?”“I rather not.”I told him how the whole thing broke me, and how I had to run very fast and very far. The words kept spilling out of me, bitter and sharp. Years of resentment.“And I just had to do the same thing to get ba

JANICEFOUR YEARS AGOI was hot.Today was a fucking hot day.The afternoon sun filtered softly through the dorm window, casting this warm glow over the tangled sheets. I was sprawled on my stomach across the table, my laptop open in front of me, typing furiously on my part of the group project the lecturer had graciously given to us just yesterday. My hair was a mess, and I was wearing one of Noel’s old hoodies that still smelled like him.Like sandalwood and mint.Mila was lying beside me on her back, scrolling through her phone, occasionally kicking her legs lazily in the air. We’d been like this for hours—this comfortable silence mixed with random bursts of conversation. This was our favorite kind of day. One in which all we needed to do was lay in bed and just be us. No pressure.“You’re totally going to fail that class if you keep working at it like some robot,” Mila teased without up from her screen.“Shut up,” I laughed, nudging her with my foot. “This is due in a week, and yo

  • Just One Night to Own Me, Daddies   Done running from the truth

JANICEThe apartment felt too quiet without Nancy. She was out with friends—spending her last days with them, making memories they didn’t know might be her last ones in this city. If everything worked according to my plans, then we would be out of this city within the week. I told her to enjoy the day, to laugh, to be normal. Aisha was with her, and I knew Calder had placed extra security on them both.I kept repeating that to myself like a fucking mantra.“She’s safe. She’s with Aisha. Calder’s men are watching them, and she’ll be fine.”I paced the living room, Bandit trailing after me like a tiny orange shadow. My hands, for some reason, wouldn’t stop shaking. It didn’t matter if Calder had deleted the video and the messages, I could still see them whenever I closed my eyes—the woman’s head snapping back, the blood, the promise that the same thing would happen to me and Lucian would be the one to do it.I didn’t want to think about Lucian.I didn’t want to think about any of them.

  • Just One Night to Own Me, Daddies   Confessions to my sister

JANICEThe morning light filtered through the thin curtains of my bedroom, soft yet so unforgiving. I woke up with a heavy chest and a quick look in the mirror showed me how swollen my eyes were, bringing back the events of the previous day crashing back like a wave I couldn’t outrun. The cafe. The video. The woman’s head snapping back as the bullet hit her. The message threatening my life if I didn’t leave Lucian, Calder—all of them.I went back to lay on the bed and stayed there for a long time, just staring at the ceiling. Bandit curled warmly against my side. His soft purring plus Nancy’s humming which was probably coming from the kitchen were the only sounds in the otherwise quiet apartment. For a second, I considered pulling the covers over my head and just disappearing from the world. But I couldn’t afford that. Not anymore.I reached for my phone on the nightstand. The screen lit up with notifications. Most of them were from Aisha, checking on me. But there were also messages

  • Just One Night to Own Me, Daddies   Flashback One

JANICEFIVE YEARS AGOThe bass thumped through the crowded frat house like a second heartbeat. Lights flashed in rhythm with the music, casting colorful shadows across sweaty bodies dancing in the living room. I clutched my red solo cup tighter, laughing as Mila dragged me through the crowd, her hand firm in mine.“Come on, JJ! You promised you’d actually try to have fun tonight!” Mila shouted over the noise, her dark hair swinging as she moved. She looked very radiant in a tight black dress, oozing confidence from every part of her.She was the kind of girl every person in this party aspired to be. And she was my friend.Mine.Mila and I had met during our dorm party—one of us an introvert and the other an extrovert who seemed to know everything and everyone. It probably helped that she was wealthy as fuck and wasn’t afraid to flaunt it as she wanted. It drew people to her.“I am having fun!” I yelled back, though my smile was a little nervous. Parties like this still felt overwhelmi
