Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Tyson's intent to show off was obvious, but I couldn't help frowning.

'Are the Addisons really this broke? Their son's allowance is only forty grand?'

Dad's fingers froze over his transfer PIN.

Tyson watched him, baffled.

Leah sneered and asked me with contempt, "Forget forty thousand. You've probably never even seen a thousand dollars in your life. Do you even know what money is?"

I was disappointed.

'Is forty grand supposed to be a lot? That won't even buy a square yard of insulation. Our workshop goes through more than that in a single week.'

The smile froze on Leah's face.

'Oh well, so they're a little broke. At least the family business is in advanced materials. I'll ask Dad sometime if he can pull some strings and get the company to partner with our plant.

'They're my blood relatives, after all. I've gotta help them.

'Struggling family business! Please buy from the Addison family.'

A silence fell. Except for the clueless Tyson, everyone in the family wore a different, unreadable expression.

Dad finished the transfer and left the living room, his face grim.

After dinner, Mom took me to a small suite next to the first-floor dining room.

She told me flatly, "Corey, the bedrooms upstairs aren't ready yet. You'll have to make do and stay here for now."

Tyson stood beside her and spoke up quietly, looking troubled, "Mom, this is the maid's room. Isn't it wrong to put Corey in here? Why don't I just give him my bedroom?"

Before I could say a word, Mom got flustered. "Absolutely not. A cramped little maid's room like this is for lowly people. How could I let you suffer in here?"

I found that hilarious.

'This family is a riot. They won't let the adopted son slum it in the maid's room, but their biological son is fair game.'

Embarrassment flashed across Mom's face. She shot me an irritated glare, then went back to coaxing Tyson, "Corey grew up in the countryside. He lived either in mud-brick houses with no running water or electricity, or in staff dorms at some small factory. For him, a maid's room is already a step up.

"But you're different. You grew up with every luxury. How could you ever get used to a maid's room?"

Her heart ached so much that tears streamed down her face.

Tyson gave a magnanimous, understanding smile. "It's okay, Mom. My bedroom belonged to Corey in the first place."

Then he turned sad and full of self-reproach. "After all, I've been living in his place for over twenty years. It's time I gave it back."

"Tyson, what are you saying? No matter what, you'll always be Mommy's precious boy..."

Mother and son went back and forth until they ended up in each other's arms, sobbing.

I looked around this room fit for "lowly people."

'Honestly, this maid's room isn't bad. Great soundproofing, too. Those two are wailing their heads off, and Dad's out there not making a peep, like he's dead.

'It is a bit small, though. No way I can bring my equipment over from the plant. If I want to work overtime, I'll have to go back there. What a hassle.'

Mom's crying stopped abruptly.

Thinking about work at the plant, I started to worry.

'I even burned my annual leave to come back for this reunion, and there's a mountain of work piling up at the office.

'Starting tomorrow, I'll have to put in a week of overtime, or I might not hit my KPI this year.'

Mom stared at me blankly, forgetting even to wipe away her tears.

She looked around the maid's room, regret on her face, lost in thought.

News that the Addisons had brought their biological son home spread quickly through Healy City's high society.

Everyone was quietly watching Tyson and me, eager for a juicy real-heir-versus-fake-heir showdown.

"Corey, we're family. Why so formal?"See? Isn't it easier when you just fall in line? Stay in your lane, and you'll always be my little brother."She reached out toward the top of my head.Right before her hand landed, I slapped it away hard. She stared in shock at her hand, which was quickly turning red, and her face went dark.I let out a huge breath of relief.'Holy cow, that was close. That witch almost touched the crown of my head. Where I grew up, nobody touches a man's head.'Leah swallowed

"Corey, doesn't your company need advanced materials? Our family happens to be doing pretty well in that area. Why don't you suggest to your bosses that they partner with our family's company?"I didn't answer right away.'The Addisons are the benchmark in commercial advanced materials. I did plan on partnering with this family at first.'But I found out their company got caught cutting corners five years ago. They were publicly reprimanded and warned by the authorities, and it even made the news.''Putting faulty materials in a rocket? Do they have a death wish?'Heather's expression changed. She raised her hand and swore to the heavens, "I stake the entire Addison family's reputation on it. All of our products pass the strictest international quality inspections. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them."I'll voluntarily submit to official inspection and testing. If they find anything out of compliance, even the smallest thing, I'll transfer all the shares in my name to you!

"Leaking company trade secrets?"The officer cuffing him scoffed as if he'd heard the joke of the century, "Why don't you come back with us first and explain what you were trying to accomplish by leaking state secrets?"With another click, the cuff locked around Tyson's other wrist. The officer nodded at me and led Tyson away, his face twisted.A dead silence fell over the room.I turned and quietly packed up my backpack.'I just sent Tyson to jail. This family of nutjobs is probably going to go crazy on me again. They might even throw me out on the street.'Good thing I didn't bring all my stuff here. I'd better head back to the plant dorm for the night, so I'll have the energy to keep tightening bolts tomorrow.'Just as I finished packing and was about to leave, the old flip phone in my pocket went off with its choppy robotic voice, "Wallet deposit received: thirty thousand dollars."Dad called me back, a hint of guilt in his voice. "Corey, we misjudged you. Take this money

Tyson hadn't even processed what he'd just read.Everyone present fell silent. What had they just heard? Rockets? Comets? After a moment, someone in the crowd asked hesitantly, "Corey, if you don't mind my asking, where do you work?"I shifted the papers in my arms lower, revealing my shirt pocket. Printed on it was a logo none of them had ever bothered to look at closely."Skygate Technologies?"A startled voice rang out, then went on with a note of respect, "That's the top aerospace manufacturer in the country. You work there?"A little surprised, I looked over. The speaker was a middle-aged man with a stern face.'He knows our plant? An insider, huh?'Someone challenged him, "Is that right? My family's company works with a few aviation companies, and I've never heard of this outfit in the industry, let alone as the best in the country."Following the doubters' lead, my parents eyed me suspiciously too.The middle-aged man rolled his eyes and started to school them, "Aeros

I looked up at Leah. Though she was scolding me, a faint smile played on her face, the look of someone whose scheme had worked.Dad's eyes were full of disappointment as he looked at me.Mom helped Tyson up, her heart aching for him.Tyson leaned into her arms and lifted his tear-streaked face. "Mommy, it's all my fault. I tried to look at Corey's things without asking; that's why he did it. Please don't blame him."The guests who'd followed them in looked on with disdain too."Just what you'd expect from a factory boy raised in the backwoods. He's barely been back with the Addisons, and he's already showing his violent side.""Raised by poor folks for over a decade, of course he turned out twisted.""Maybe he's been jealous of Tyson from the start and wants to drive him out of the family."Tyson kept crying and fanned the flames. "Mommy, Corey is only upset because I took his life. If he doesn't want me in this family, I'll just leave..."Mom looked up at me with hatred, as i
