Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
To show that the Addisons treated both sons equally, Dad threw a banquet especially for me.

The funny thing was, no one told me a thing about it.

That evening, I finally got off from a long, hard day at the plant and came home.

When I pushed open the door, a living room full of glamorous socialites turned to look at me all at once, their eyes surprised, disdainful, or openly contemptuous.

Tyson's exaggerated voice rang out, "Corey! Why'd you come to the banquet dressed like that?"

I looked over at him.

He'd obviously put a lot of thought into tonight. He was styled down to the last strand of hair and wore a bespoke suit, which made him stand out among the guests.

Tyson walked up to me and asked carefully, "Why aren't you wearing a suit? Don't you like the one Mom and Dad got ready for you? How about you go to my closet and pick one you like?"

His words sounded caring, but the gloating in his eyes was practically spilling over.

Sure enough, the guests around us began to whisper.

"So this is the real heir the Addisons just brought home? He's not fit to be seen in public."

"The Addisons threw this banquet just for him. Did he dress like that on purpose to embarrass them?"

I glanced around.

Melanie pretended not to know me. She continued laughing and chatting with a few guests.

Heather stood not far away, watching the show, with no intention of coming over to put in a word for me.

Leah walked over with our parents, her expression dark.

Mom scolded me in a low voice right away, "Corey, what's wrong with you? This is such an important occasion. Look at what you're wearing!"

I looked down at myself: a plant-issued shirt and work pants. Comfortable and durable. Nothing wrong with that.

'I'm so tired and sleepy. I didn't spend all day tightening bolts just to come home and put on a show with them. Aliens are about to invade Earth. Who has time to play these rich-family power games?

'If I'd known, I would've stayed at the plant. Instead of watching them put on this production, I could've run a few more rounds of simulated launch tests.'

Dad looked grim, forcing a smile as he introduced me to the guests, "This is my son, Corey. We just brought him home from a small town. He doesn't know any better, so please forgive him."

Tyson was quick to chime in and explain for me, "It's Corey's first time at a party like this. He doesn't have much experience, so please don't hold it against him."

But the looks people gave me only grew more contemptuous.

"I heard his adoptive parents are herders, and he grew up with cattle and sheep. Now that I've seen him, he really is... not fit for polite company."

"That's not all. I heard he's just a factory hand with no education or manners. Next to him, Tyson looks a lot more like the real heir."

My parents' faces darkened more and more amid the whispers.

Tyson's lips curled slightly, but he pretended to plead kindly with our parents, "Tonight's party was thrown to introduce Corey anyway. Mom, Dad, please don't blame him."

Then he deliberately changed the subject, "Oh, Corey, I heard you've been working for a big-name company. Which one is it?"

He asked in an innocent, joking tone, as if afraid anyone here might not know I worked at a factory.

"Lots of family friends came tonight. Maybe your boss is even one of the guests!"

Laughter rippled through the crowd again.

"Since when does an electronics factory count as a big-name company? Does the real heir have some kind of misunderstanding about what that means?"

"He's from the sticks, after all. Of course he can't tell a little factory from a big company."

"My company would never hire someone without even a high school diploma. How embarrassing."

The sneering chatter around us made my parents' faces grow darker still.

"Corey, we're family. Why so formal?"See? Isn't it easier when you just fall in line? Stay in your lane, and you'll always be my little brother."She reached out toward the top of my head.Right before her hand landed, I slapped it away hard. She stared in shock at her hand, which was quickly turning red, and her face went dark.I let out a huge breath of relief.'Holy cow, that was close. That witch almost touched the crown of my head. Where I grew up, nobody touches a man's head.'Leah swallowed

"Corey, doesn't your company need advanced materials? Our family happens to be doing pretty well in that area. Why don't you suggest to your bosses that they partner with our family's company?"I didn't answer right away.'The Addisons are the benchmark in commercial advanced materials. I did plan on partnering with this family at first.'But I found out their company got caught cutting corners five years ago. They were publicly reprimanded and warned by the authorities, and it even made the news.''Putting faulty materials in a rocket? Do they have a death wish?'Heather's expression changed. She raised her hand and swore to the heavens, "I stake the entire Addison family's reputation on it. All of our products pass the strictest international quality inspections. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them."I'll voluntarily submit to official inspection and testing. If they find anything out of compliance, even the smallest thing, I'll transfer all the shares in my name to you!

"Leaking company trade secrets?"The officer cuffing him scoffed as if he'd heard the joke of the century, "Why don't you come back with us first and explain what you were trying to accomplish by leaking state secrets?"With another click, the cuff locked around Tyson's other wrist. The officer nodded at me and led Tyson away, his face twisted.A dead silence fell over the room.I turned and quietly packed up my backpack.'I just sent Tyson to jail. This family of nutjobs is probably going to go crazy on me again. They might even throw me out on the street.'Good thing I didn't bring all my stuff here. I'd better head back to the plant dorm for the night, so I'll have the energy to keep tightening bolts tomorrow.'Just as I finished packing and was about to leave, the old flip phone in my pocket went off with its choppy robotic voice, "Wallet deposit received: thirty thousand dollars."Dad called me back, a hint of guilt in his voice. "Corey, we misjudged you. Take this money

Tyson hadn't even processed what he'd just read.Everyone present fell silent. What had they just heard? Rockets? Comets? After a moment, someone in the crowd asked hesitantly, "Corey, if you don't mind my asking, where do you work?"I shifted the papers in my arms lower, revealing my shirt pocket. Printed on it was a logo none of them had ever bothered to look at closely."Skygate Technologies?"A startled voice rang out, then went on with a note of respect, "That's the top aerospace manufacturer in the country. You work there?"A little surprised, I looked over. The speaker was a middle-aged man with a stern face.'He knows our plant? An insider, huh?'Someone challenged him, "Is that right? My family's company works with a few aviation companies, and I've never heard of this outfit in the industry, let alone as the best in the country."Following the doubters' lead, my parents eyed me suspiciously too.The middle-aged man rolled his eyes and started to school them, "Aeros

I looked up at Leah. Though she was scolding me, a faint smile played on her face, the look of someone whose scheme had worked.Dad's eyes were full of disappointment as he looked at me.Mom helped Tyson up, her heart aching for him.Tyson leaned into her arms and lifted his tear-streaked face. "Mommy, it's all my fault. I tried to look at Corey's things without asking; that's why he did it. Please don't blame him."The guests who'd followed them in looked on with disdain too."Just what you'd expect from a factory boy raised in the backwoods. He's barely been back with the Addisons, and he's already showing his violent side.""Raised by poor folks for over a decade, of course he turned out twisted.""Maybe he's been jealous of Tyson from the start and wants to drive him out of the family."Tyson kept crying and fanned the flames. "Mommy, Corey is only upset because I took his life. If he doesn't want me in this family, I'll just leave..."Mom looked up at me with hatred, as i
