Chapter 2

Author: Clara Faye
I had known Leon for as long as I had been putting up with Allison.

Not long after I agreed to date him, I walked into his place and found her there, fresh out of the shower with a towel wrapped around her. When I asked what was going on, Leon didn't even pause.

"Allison's one of my closest friends. She just used my place to shower. Don't make it into something dirty."

The rumors I had been trying to forget rushed back all at once, and whatever I wanted to say died in my throat.

I forced a smile, trying to smooth things over, but Allison just stared at me, eyes wide.

"You look familiar…" she said. "I swear I've seen your nudes online!"

Then she glanced at Leon and laughed. "Seriously? You're going for someone like that?"

I broke down right there.

Leon didn't even look up from his game. "Come on, Allison doesn't filter herself. She saw them, so what? Why are you making such a big deal out of it?"

Back then, I convinced myself I was the problem, that I was too sensitive and read too much into everything.

Leon had been good to me in so many ways. I held on to that, telling myself to let things go again and again.

But every Valentine's Day, every Christmas, I would see Allison's messages pop up on his phone.

[Thanks for the gifts, buddy! Isn't giving them to me better than wasting them on your used-up girlfriend?]

There would always be a photo attached: a girl leaning against a man's bare arm, smiling as if she belonged there.

My vision would blur with tears.

I told Leon it bothered me, but he brushed it off.

"Allison doesn't mean anything by it. She jokes around. You can't assume the worst about her just because of your past."

I tried to break up with him.

That was the first time I saw him panic. To keep me and make me feel secure, he proposed soon after. He swore he would never let me get hurt again, and that he would never let me down.

We registered our marriage three years ago, but he never gave me a wedding. Even this ceremony only happened because I begged for it.

Standing here now, I finally accepted the truth.

When I turned to leave, the whispers around us grew louder.

"What's going on? Why did the wedding stop?"

"After those photos? Everyone probably thinks she's a porn star now. There's no way she can still marry him."

"Maybe she wanted those photos shown."

I took the microphone from the host and spoke into it. "This wedding is off. I'm not marrying Leon."

Leon froze where he stood, shock flashing across his face, followed by something like hurt. "Gemma, it wasn't easy getting here. What are you doing?"

Allison rushed forward and knocked the mic out of my hand. "It's just a few photos. Did you have to blow it out of proportion?"

Leon's mom stepped in immediately and grabbed my arm hard. "Look around! Everyone's watching. Aren't you embarrassed? You humiliated our family, and now you're the one calling off the wedding?"

Her eyes moved between me and Allison, and she let out a long, drawn-out sound.

"You're being way too petty. I've known Allison since she was a kid. If there was anything between her and my son, don't you think I'd know?"

Leon's relatives laughed even louder.

"Who knows how many men have seen her naked? That's disgusting!"

"What kind of decent woman takes pictures like that?"

"At least Allison's different. We've known her since she was a kid."

The smile on Allison's face was getting harder for her to hide.

Something in me snapped. I let out a short laugh and turned back to face them.

"Fine. I won't make a scene. Have Allison strip right now and let everyone take pictures of her, and I'll go through with the wedding."

I sued Leon and Allison for invasion of privacy, defamation, and the emotional and financial harm they had caused me. The authorities also opened a criminal investigation into the role they played in my mother's death. Any one of those charges would have been serious on its own.On the day of the hearing, they were escorted into the courtroom and seated at the defense table. The moment Allison saw me, she lunged forward, completely out of control. "Gemma, you tramp! You ruined me!" The bailiff forced her back into her seat.Leon didn't move. He sat there watching me the entire time without saying a word, regret and something close to pleading written plainly in his eyes. After the judge read the charges, I presented my evidence one piece at a time.Leon's affair. Allison's distribution of my private photos.Every photo, every text message, every document showed how the two of them had worked together to destroy my life. Each exhibit felt like another knife twisting in Leon'

The Colemans moved quickly. Three days later, the investigation was complete. It wasn't just the photos from the wedding. Every image circulating online had been orchestrated by Allison, including the latest wave of harassment. She had taken the photos my ex posted years ago and pushed them back into circulation.Leon's hands shook as he read the report.Seven years ago, those same photos had nearly driven me to suicide. He had been the one who stayed with me then, helping me out of that darkness, helping me believe I could start over. And now, at the wedding I had waited three years for, he had stood there while I was humiliated in front of everyone. If Allison had planned it all, then he had been right there beside her, letting it happen. That made him no better. He found Allison at a bar, drinking with a group of men. The moment she saw him, she brightened and rushed over."Leon, you finally came to see me! I knew you couldn't let me go."Leon didn't respond. He threw the r

I woke up three days later with a hollow ache low in my abdomen, like something important had been taken from me. The nurse told me I had miscarried, and then, almost as an afterthought, that my mom was gone, too. I lay there, staring at the ceiling while tears slid quietly into my hair. The door opened, a little too loud for the stillness in the room. Leon stepped in, careful, carrying a thermos. His eyes were swollen, his face drawn with exhaustion."You're awake," he said. "I made some soup. Try to eat a little."I turned my head away.He set the thermos down and sat beside my bed, tears falling. I stared at him, stunned. Leon had always carried himself like someone untouchable. I had never seen him look so defeated. For a moment, all I could see was myself apologizing through tears, begging him to save my mom while he looked at me without a shred of compassion."I'm sorry," he said, his voice hoarse. "I didn't know you were pregnant. If I had, I never would've…"I cut

I lost consciousness the moment I hit the lawn outside the villa.Leon ran downstairs, scooped me up, and drove straight to the hospital, running multiple red lights along the way. He kept his eyes forward, avoiding the blood, refusing to think about what it might mean.He waited outside for five hours before the doctor finally came out and spoke."Mr. Coleman, your wife came in with a threatened miscarriage. We couldn't save the baby."Leon went completely still. He stood there holding my blood-soaked body, his hands shaking. "What did you say? Say that again."The doctor sighed. "She suffered severe emotional distress, and there was external trauma. We couldn't save the pregnancy. We did everything we could."Leon's eyes turned red, his voice unsteady. "She was pregnant?"For a brief second, something like overwhelming relief flickered across his face, then disappeared just as quickly. The baby was gone. His child was gone. The doctor looked at him, confused. "Your wife w

The wedding was called off, and my mom was rushed to the hospital after collapsing. I sat outside the operating room, staring at the red light that never seemed to turn off, my heart pounding as I kept praying she would make it.Leon showed up with Allison, her eyes red. The moment he saw me, his expression hardened. "Allison's getting dragged online because of you."Someone had taken photos from the wedding, the moment Allison started taking off her clothes, edited them, and posted them online. The comments were filthy, calling her a mistress, a tramp, tearing her apart. Before I could even process it, Leon grabbed my arm and yanked me up from the chair. I was already weak from early pregnancy, and my legs gave out. I hit the cold floor hard, pain shooting through me, but he didn't even glance down."Apologize to Allison," he said. "If you hadn't made a scene at the wedding, none of this would've happened."Tears burned in my eyes as I pointed toward the operating room. "Sh

Leon reacted immediately, his voice sharp. "Gemma, have you lost your mind? You're making this into something it's not!"A faint, bitter smile crossed my face. Before I could respond, Allison clenched her jaw and grabbed her shirt."Fine. I'll do it. It's not like I care about this stuff." She glanced at Leon. "Watch closely. I'm not as uptight as your wife."She sounded confident, but after pulling her shirt halfway off and revealing a pale pink bra, her hands stalled."Go on," I said calmly. Her eyes reddened. After a brief pause, she yanked the rest of her shirt off in one sharp motion. Her back was covered in marks, dark and light, scattered across her skin.A murmur spread through the room. "Wait, isn't Allison single? Where'd all those hickeys come from?"Leon's expression hardened. He took off his suit jacket, wrapped it around her, and pulled her into his arms as if to block her from view. Then he turned to me, his gaze cold, and slapped me.The sound rang out, sharp
