Chapter 2

Author: AAA Builder
Vivian's knock came twice.

"Graham? Are you changed? The guests will be here any minute."

I didn't answer.

A moment later, Vivian knocked again, her voice softening ever so slightly. "Once you make it through tonight's welcome-home dinner, you'll officially be a member of the Bennett family."

My eyes drifted to the gray uniform laid across the bed.

I put it on.

In the mirror, I barely recognized myself. A dog collar hung around my neck. I was dressed in a gray butler's uniform, with a gold dog tag pinned to my chest. My name was engraved on it.

By the time I went downstairs, the living room was already packed. There were even reporters setting up cameras and livestream equipment in the corners.

"Graham's here! Everyone, let's welcome the Bennetts' eldest son!"

Dressed in a crisp white suit, Lucas stood at the center of the room. The moment he saw me, he smiled brightly and started clapping.

Dozens of heads turned toward me. Some guests lowered their wineglasses. Others covered their mouths to hide their laughter, while a few openly raised their phones to record me.

A reporter thrust a microphone toward me. "Mr. Bennett, after spending seven years in prison, how do you feel about your experience?"

Vivian stepped between us and pushed the microphone aside. "This is a private family gathering. We're not taking questions."

Although she blocked the reporter, she made no move to stop the livestream cameras.

A wealthy socialite walked over and looked me up and down before tapping the gold dog tag on my chest with her folding fan. "Lucas, is this your family's new chauffeur?"

Lucas laughed and waved his hand. "Oh, don't tease me. That's my big brother."

"Oh..." She deliberately drew out the word. "The one who went to prison?"

Nearby, several guests spoke loudly, making no attempt to hide that I could hear them.

"I heard what he did back then was serious. That kid almost died."

"Such a handsome young man. What a waste..."

Vivian led me around the room, introducing me to the guests. She chose her words carefully. "This is my younger brother, Graham Bennett. He lost his way for a while, but he's finally home."

She never mentioned prison. She didn't have to. Everyone knew exactly what she meant.

Someone asked, "What do you mean by 'lost his way'?"

Standing nearby, Lucas leaned toward one of his friends and whispered just loudly enough for everyone around them to hear.

"My brother got into a little trouble back then, but my sisters were willing to forgive him and bring him home. The Bennett family never abandons its own."

Halfway through the dinner, someone called for Lucas to perform. He graciously sat down at the piano and played Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."

His fingers glided effortlessly across the keys. When the final note faded, the room erupted in applause.

Lucas stood, bowed to the guests, then turned toward me with an innocent smile. "Graham, your turn. What did you prepare? Everyone's waiting."

Standing in the corner, I clenched the seam of my pants so tightly my knuckles turned white. No one had ever told me I was supposed to prepare a performance.

Lucas tilted his head as though he'd just had a wonderful idea. "Then why don't Graham and Duke put on a little show together? Graham can crawl like a dog."

He clapped his hands and lifted Duke down from the sofa. "Duke loves playing with people!"

The room fell silent.

Vivian paused, her wineglass suspended in midair.

Claire lowered her voice. "Lucas, maybe not. There are so many guests here. And we're livestreaming."

The smile on Lucas's face stiffened. "Why not? Aren't you always saying Duke is part of the family? So what's wrong with letting Graham play with family?"

He lifted a hand and wiped at the corner of his eye as his lips began to tremble. "Or... are you taking Graham's side now? No matter what I do, it's never good enough, is it?"

Claire immediately fell silent.

Vivian set down her wineglass and looked at me. "On your knees."

I drew a slow breath.

The System chimed inside my mind.

System: [Departure Countdown: 08:34:00]

I was leaving this world soon anyway. There was no point arguing anymore.

I bent my knees and placed my hands on the floor. Just as I was about to drop onto all fours, a furious roar exploded from behind me.

"I'd like to see who dares make him crawl like a dog!"

  • Karma Found Them After My Death   Chapter 10

On the day of my funeral, the sky was clear and cloudless. There wasn't even a breeze. My sisters and Charlotte knelt before my grave. White lilies blanketed the ground, and my name was carved into the headstone: Graham Bennett.Claire gently placed the little lion in front of it. She had spent the entire night sewing it back together, carefully stuffing the cotton back inside, stitching up its torn ear, and painstakingly embroidering the words "Graham" all over again."Here you go." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I lost it, but I've fixed it now."Natalie knelt beside her, clutching the necklace in her hand. She had always believed Lucas bought it for her. Now she knew. I'd worked three months of part-time jobs to pay for it. She opened her mouth again and again, trying to speak, but not a single word came out.Vivian knelt at the front of the grave, her back perfectly straight, like a statue carved from stone. She stared at my name for a long time. Then she slowly bent

Claire closed the journal.Vivian stood frozen in place, the muscles in her face twitching uncontrollably.Natalie sank to the floor, clutching her head in both hands.Charlotte leaned against the wall without a trace of expression. The front of her blouse had already been soaked with blood. She couldn't understand it. It felt as though her heart had been torn apart, and she couldn't stop coughing up blood. At that same moment, all three sisters doubled over. The agony in their chests reached its peak. It felt as though someone had ripped their hearts straight out of their bodies.Vivian's knees slammed into the tile with a heavy thud. Supporting herself with one hand, she slowly raised her head and fixed her gaze on Lucas, who stood at the foot of the staircase. A mouthful of blood spilled from her lips."You killed my brother."Lucas dropped to his knees with a thud and scrambled toward her, wrapping both arms around her leg. "Vivian, that's not true! I was just afraid you'd s

The car hadn't even come to a complete stop before Natalie threw open the door and rushed inside.Lucas was sitting on the living room sofa, scrolling through his phone. Hearing the commotion, he looked up with his usual sweet, innocent smile."You're back?"Natalie stormed over, snatched the phone from his hand, and hurled it to the floor. The screen shattered."Tell me the truth. Did you set Graham up seven years ago?"Lucas froze for a split second. Then his eyes instantly filled with tears. "Nat, what are you talking about? I don't understand..."Vivian and Claire walked in. Charlotte followed several steps behind.Vivian stopped in front of him, staring down at him coldly. "Drew Walker confessed to everything."Lucas's face drained of color, but only for an instant. Then the tears came pouring out."Vivian, I know what you're talking about."He dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around her leg. "I was wrong. But I was terrified. When Graham came home, all of you s

Inside the police interview room, Detective Daniel Brooks opened a case file and slid a stack of documents toward them across the table."We've recently been investigating a major insurance fraud scheme. It led us back to the victim in the school poisoning case from seven years ago—Drew Walker."He pulled out a medical report."According to the original diagnosis, Drew suffered severe liver and kidney damage from the poisoning and would require medication for the rest of his life. He used that report to file a substantial disability insurance claim."But during a medical examination last month..." Detective Brooks turned the report around and pointed to the results."Every one of his organs is functioning normally. There are no lasting effects from poisoning. The original disability report was falsified."Vivian accepted the report with shaking fingers.Detective Brooks continued, "We reopened the original case. The evidence we have now indicates that Graham Bennett may have bee

Everyone froze.Vivian was the first to speak."He froze to death? It's August. It's ninety-five degrees outside, and you're telling me he froze to death?"The doctor spread the report across the desk and pointed to the data. "His core body temperature was only seventy-nine degrees. He suffered extensive frost injuries to all four extremities, consistent with prolonged exposure to subfreezing temperatures for at least four to five hours."He turned to the next page. "As for the wounds on his body, these injuries weren't caused by a suicide attempt. He was using his own blood to keep himself warm."Silence fell over the hallway."What do you mean?" Claire's voice tightened. The doctor pointed to the wound analysis. "The injury to his wrist wasn't caused by a vertical or horizontal cut. It was a friction wound."He repeatedly scraped his wrist against a hard edge until the skin split open. Then he smeared the warm blood over his arms, torso, and legs. The heat from fresh blood ca

Still refusing to give up, she pressed her ear against my chest. One second.Two.The color slowly drained from her face."No..."She went into a frenzy, planting both hands on my chest and beginning CPR.One compression, two, three."Call an ambulance!"Natalie stood frozen in the doorway.
