Chapter 289

Author: Maureen Green
Aspen never imagined that Colin would stoop so low. He was even willing to frame the innocent Aren just to get back at her.

"What should we do?" Aspen paced back and forth in her office, as anxious as a cat on a hot tin roof.

She knew Aren's character well. He would never leak trade secrets. This had to be Colin's scheme.

"Ms. Nicholls, please don't worry," Riley said, trying to comfort her. "The most important thing now is to find evidence and prove Mr. Jefferson's innocence."

Just as Aspen was fretting, Chester hurried in.

"Aspen, I heard Aren was arrested. What happened?" Chester asked urgently as soon as he entered.

"It's all because of that despicable Colin!" Aspen said bitterly. "He framed Aren for leaking trade secrets to get back at me. He's absolutely shameless!"

"That bastard is getting more and more outrageous!" Chester was furious too. "Let's go to the police station right now. I want to see if Colin really thinks he's above the law!"

Chester grabbed Aspen's arm and

"I'm fine," Colin said."What did the doctor say?" Gwyneth asked."The doctor told me to quit drinking and get plenty of rest," Colin replied. She said, "That's good. I'll take good care of you."Colin remained silent as he stared out the car window at the passing scenery, lost in thought. He recalled all the little ways Aspen had cared for him over the years. Whenever he got drunk, Aspen would always make him hangover soup, massage his temples, and stay by his side until he fell asleep. On the other hand, Gwyneth would just make him a cup of honey water and play on her phone, seemingly indifferent to his well-being.Colin suddenly felt ridiculous; he'd pushed Aspen away with his own hands. So what right did he have to miss her now?Just then, his phone rang—it was Riley calling. "Mr. Fuller, we've got trouble. We've lost another major client!" Riley reported anxiously. "What? What happened?" Colin's expression changed dramatically. Riley explained, "I'm not entirely sure

Just then, Chester walked in. "Aspen, I have some news, though I'm not sure if I should tell you.""What is it?" Aspen asked. He explained, "I heard that Colin hasn't been in a good mood lately, and he's making a mess of things at the company. He seems to be pushing all the blame onto you."Aspen said flatly, "Let him say what he wants. I have nothing to hide and don't fear him slandering me.""But I also heard he's been drinking heavily lately, and his health is deteriorating," Chester continued.Aspen felt a slight twinge in her heart, but she quickly suppressed the feeling. She simply said, "That's his business. It has nothing to do with me."Chester nodded. "You're right. We should just focus on our own affairs."...In Colin's office, he was yelling furiously into his phone. "Useless! You're all useless! You couldn't even handle such a simple project—what good are any of you?"He hung up and slammed his phone onto the desk. After a while, Gwyneth walked through the door

Gwyneth said, "Alright then. Get some rest, and call me if you need anything.""Sure," Colin mumbled before closing his eyes.Gwyneth watched Colin, feeling a wave of disappointment. She silently gathered her things and walked out of the office.Colin heard the door close and slowly opened his eyes. …Riley placed a stack of documents on Aspen's desk with a serious expression. "Ms. Nicholls, take a look at these financial records from Fuller Group that I recently found."Aspen put down her pen and picked up the documents, examining them carefully. As she read, her brows furrowed deeper. She said gravely, "There are so many problems with these accounts."Riley nodded. "Exactly. I suspect someone in Fuller Group is falsifying financial records, and the amounts involved are substantial."Aspen smirked. "It seems Colin's troubles are even bigger than we imagined. This is perfect timing for us.""Ms. Nicholls, what will our next move be?" Riley asked. "Let's not do anything ye

Gwyneth walked to Colin's side and placed the thermos container on the desk. "I'm worried about you. No matter how busy you are with work, you still need to take care of your health."She opened the container, and a pleasant aroma of food drifted through the air. She said, "I made this for you myself. Try some."Colin looked at the food in the container but had absolutely no appetite. He remembered the meals Aspen used to cook. Though they weren't as refined as Gwyneth's, they had tasted much better."Colin, what's wrong?" Gwyneth asked with concern when she noticed Colin wasn't speaking. "Are you feeling sick?""I'm fine," Colin snapped back to reality and answered. "I'm not hungry, so please take it back."Gwyneth held a spoonful of food to Colin's mouth. "Colin, just eat a little. Do it for me, okay?" Colin saw Gwyneth's pitiful expression and softened, opening his mouth to take a bite. The food tasted mediocre, and he found it difficult to swallow. He suddenly realized that

"Here, try this. I had the restaurant make it specially," Aspen remarked as she picked up an appetizing piece of fish and placed it on Aren's plate."Thanks." Aren smiled, picking up the fish and putting it in his mouth, savoring it slowly. "It tastes great. You've always had excellent taste."Aspen raised her eyebrows proudly. "Of course. I carefully selected this restaurant. Their dishes are quite unique. We should come here more often in the future."Aren nodded. "Sure. But you've been so busy lately. You need to make sure you get enough rest and don't wear yourself out."Aspen said, "Don't worry, I know my limits. By the way, what do you think of the company's recent development plans?""They're excellent. Your strategy is precise, and every step has been solid," Aren praised. "If we continue developing like this, it won't be long before we secure our place in the market.""It's everyone's achievement," Aspen replied modestly. "Without all of your support, I couldn't have acc

Just then, Gwyneth walked in, carrying a thermos container. She said gently, "Colin, you haven't eaten lunch, have you? I brought you something to eat."Colin opened his eyes and looked at Gwyneth, feeling irritated. He said, "I have no appetite. Just take it away."Gwyneth walked to his side and placed the thermos on the table. "Colin, how can you not eat? Your condition isn't good right now, which is exactly why you need to eat properly."She opened the thermos, releasing a rich aroma. She said, "I made this especially for you. Just try some."Colin looked at the food in the container but felt no hunger whatsoever. "I said I'm not hungry. Please take it away."Gwyneth's expression froze; she hadn't expected Colin to dismiss her so bluntly. She asked, looking hurt, "Colin, are you still mad at me? I know I shouldn't have mentioned Aspen yesterday, but I was only thinking of your well-being."Colin said, "I'm not mad at you. I'm just... not in a good mood."Gwyneth replied, "C

Colin opened his eyes and looked at the steaming bowl of soup, but not a single trace of appetite stirred within him. He muttered, "I'm not hungry. You should have it instead.""Colin, just have a little." Gwyneth persuaded him gently, lifting a spoonful and holding it near his lips. "It's good for your stomach."Colin glanced at her, and seeing the tenderness in her face, something inside him softened. He parted his lips and took a sip. The soup was mild, with a slight sweetness, but it tasted dull and lifeless to him."Aspen's cooking was better," he murmured under his breath.Gwyneth's face froze, and her hand trembled—she almost dropped the spoon. She forced a calm tone while rage surged beneath her skin, asking, "What did you just say?""Nothing," Colin said quickly, realizing his slip-up. "The soup's good. Really."Gwyneth said nothing, continuing to feed him spoonful by spoonful, though her jaw was tight and her smile had vanished. She felt intensely uncomfortable. In no

Gwyneth stood at the doorway, eyeing Colin's drunken state with a flash of irritation—but it vanished just as quickly, replaced by a gentle smile. She said in a sweet voice, "Colin, it's me. Why are you drinking so much again? Didn't the doctor say your stomach can't handle it?"The light in Colin's eyes dimmed. He looked at her and gave a bitter, mocking smile. "You're back."He set down the glass and stumbled to the couch, collapsing onto it with a heavy sigh.Gwyneth walked over and sat beside him, reaching out to massage his temples. She asked, "Colin, something's bothering you, isn't it? You can talk to me."Colin brushed her hand away, the edge in his tone unmistakable. "I'm fine. You don't have to worry about me." He closed his eyes and leaned back against the couch, shutting himself off. Gwyneth's hand hung in the air for a moment before she slowly lowered it, her smile faltering. She took a deep breath and forced her voice to stay sweet. "Colin, I know things have bee

Colin's expression grew darker. He hadn't expected that, in just a few days of being hospitalized, his company would fall into such chaos. He paced back and forth in the room, seething with frustration. Deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that Aspen had something to do with all of this. That night, when Colin returned home, he found Gwyneth lounging on the couch, watching TV."Colin, you're back," Gwyneth said, rising to greet him. Her voice was laced with concern. "How are you feeling today? Any better?""I'm fine," Colin replied blandly. His mind was consumed with company issues, and he had no patience left for small talk."I heard about some things at the office today..." Gwyneth began carefully, testing the waters. "Sounds like things aren't going too well.""Yeah," Colin muttered, barely listening. "I heard Aspen's behind it," Gwyneth added in a cautious tone. "She and Aren are working together, trying to drive Fuller Group out of the market."Colin's eyes darkened
