Present Day

I don't even have time to object. I feel the prick in my arm again. Almost instantly, consciousness slips away, plunging me into a deep darkness. The last things I see are his wicked gaze and the looming hint of victory on his cyanide lips.

...

I wake up abruptly with a start because a bucket of freezing water has just been dumped over me. The culprit is that damned Russian, who won't stop yelling at the top of his lungs. I barely manage to orient myself; I'm in a bathroom, and not just any bathroom—this place oozes luxury everywhere. There's no trace of that dilapidated room I was in earlier. I'm naked, and it's humiliating to be exposed like this to the wretch of... Aleksander? I think that's his name.

I don't know if much time has passed since the shadows of a forced sleep claimed me. All I know for sure is the sheer torture inflicted by my captor.

"Stop! Why are you doing this to me?!" I blurt out, shivering, terrified I might get hypothermia, though at this point nothing could be worse than what I've already endured.

"Don't ask questions. You have no right. Get in the tub," he demands in a loud voice.

"I-I can shower by myself, please..."

He shakes his head. I feared as much.

For the next few minutes, I have to endure the path of his hands moving all over my body. He doesn't just rub a sponge on my skin; he gropes me shamelessly. He takes advantage of the situation, and out of fear of being beaten, I resign myself to it. A burning tightness grips my chest, causing dyspnea. I have never felt as dirty as I do right now.

"If you follow my rules, your stay here won't be as painful," he asserts. The statement does nothing to soothe my soul.

I will suffer; there's no doubt he'll hurt me anyway—in fact, he already has.

Tears mix with the cold water, my teeth start chattering, and my body trembles from the low temperature. I take a deep breath. After a while, he washes my hair too.

"Stand up," he orders, helping me when he notices I'm struggling to move. "I'll take you to the bedroom. You're going to stay in bed, understand?"

He hands me a towel, and I wrap myself in it the best I can. After he opens the door, I find myself in a room that defies the typical setting of a kidnapping. Everything is bright, modern, and elegant. It's a chamber that exudes arrogance in every element. It feels unreal to be here; disbelief occupies half my brain, still refusing to credit the atmosphere I're breathing.

"Look at me. I don't know how I'm supposed to walk. I'm thirsty, hungry... You can see I can't even take a step," I whisper weakly.

"I'll give you food. Just move," he insists.

The walls combine pastel tones that momentarily offer warmth—warmth that is snatched away the moment my feet touch the grotesque reality. Even though it looks perfect, it isn't; the luxurious bedroom has a hostile purpose, a malevolent objective pointing straight at me. There is a huge black plasma TV, a daybed at the foot of the white bed, matching a set of sofas near a window where satin curtains cover the glass. Finally, my eyes land on the massive bed, accompanied by nightstands with lamps on each.

I abandon my scrutiny. The malignant being beside me has left, abandoning me at the edge of the bed. I sense that many things destined to scar me will happen on that quilt. Processing it now won't make the pain any less devastating, but at least it won't take me by surprise. I know very well I'll end up battered—perhaps dead.

I don't know; how could I know? This whole situation stinks. Hell burns, and now that I'm living it in the flesh, I yearn for salvation. The police are probably looking for me already; maybe Dad and Mom think I'm dead. Going crazy trying to find a way out—nothing comes to mind. My instincts were chained alongside the vigor contained within my being; he absorbed it—that wretched Italian—and now another seeks to inhale my last breath.

And... I want to succumb.

Clack, clack, clack...

That sound detonates inside me, deafening to my sensitive hearing. I'm freezing to death, hugging myself as tightly as I can to generate warmth, but it's not enough. Aleksander tosses me a white nightgown, and nothing else. I won't bother asking for underwear; it's obvious he won't give it to me. Still under his deep gaze, I slip into the fabric, managing to warm my numb muscles.

I dry my hair a little, but I'm losing the thread, my senses. I faint in a snap.

I wake up to a stinging sensation on my face. I touch my cheek; something is sitting right over the injury—a bandage. I gasp, turning my head to the side. All the oxygen vanishes from my lungs when I run into him. He approaches with a glass of water I'm dying to drink; I'm perishing for it.

"Open your mouth. I don't have all day for you," he growls. I comply. The first drop wetting my lips gives me courage, and the first sip brings me back to life. "The doctor checked you. You're not in bad shape. You'll recover; it's just a matter of days. Here, eat this borscht."

I stare suspiciously at the soup, accompanied by a piece of bread. Its color is a deep red; I have no idea what it contains, but I decide to eat it anyway. It's food, after all.

"See you soon. I have other things to do," he explains, walking away without turning to look at me again.

I don't respond. Whatever I'm eating tastes remarkably good—perhaps it's my ravenous appetite making the peculiar liquid irresistible. I sigh on the fifth spoonful, deciding to try the bread and alternate it with the soup. A couple of minutes later, I finish devouring it. I feel better. My wasted state has vanished.

EPILOGUEWe all held our collective breath the exact second Dad dropped gracefully down onto one knee. Mom clutched her hands over her mouth, completely paralyzed by disbelief. I immediately choked back a sob, my hand flying to my mouth as Aleksander slid a strong arm securely around my waist, trying his best to ground me. But it was useless—I was already leaking fat, ugly tears. It was just too overwhelming."Elena, the absolute love of my life... I've known for a long time that I want you to be my wife, and there is nothing and no one in this world powerful enough to stop me. You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Through every brutal twist, every high and low, love doesn't just fade—it proves itself stronger than every single obstacle thrown in our path. Today, standing here surrounded by our children, I'm kneeling before you to ask: will you finally let me spend the rest of my days as your husband? Will you marry me?""Oh, my God... yes, a million times yes!" she

THE ENDFour Months Later...Aleksander's hands traced every contour of my body, instantly setting my skin on fire. He knew we weren't entirely alone—most of the family was milling around just outside the room—yet he didn't give a damn about maintaining propriety. Not that I had any real desire to make him stop. At this point in the pregnancy, I desperately needed his heavy, anchoring touch."Alek...""Just give me a second..." he growled softly against my lips.I tangled my fingers deep into the hair at the nape of his neck, leaning in to brush my lips against his. If he wanted to keep going, fine, but I couldn't shake the heavy awareness of my family waiting outside. How mortifying would it be if someone walked in on us?"Stop. I want you just as much, but this is definitely not the right time, Aleksander," I scolded gently, pulling my mouth away completely. He let out an exaggerated, childish pout that made me roll my eyes."You can't just leave me hanging like this.""You act like

"I trusted you. I thought you trusted me, too. What kind of sick joke is this, Luna? Do you have any idea what it means for you to be married to a mobster?" he demanded, shaking his head."There's immense danger, I know, Dad. But I love Aleksander. I just wish I could have told you this sooner, I really do," I whispered, fighting the heavy, churning tide of emotions dragging me under."Why tell me now?" he breathed heavily, glaring at me like an enraged bull."Because..." I held his gaze, even though the visual contact felt like a searing burn tearing my heart apart. "I refuse to keep living like this, looking at you while knowing you're completely in the dark. Dad, I had to tell you because living a lie is like an avalanche waiting to bury us all. It was better to rip the bandage off now than wait for it to crush us." I dropped my head, nervously twisting my fingers together in my lap. "I know Mom needs to talk to you, but please... don't be too hard on her.""You have no right—corre

I woke up gasping, my heart racing in the dark. It wasn't dawn yet, and I hated that because falling back asleep would be tough. I managed to calm my pulse, though cold sweat still clung to my forehead. Reliving that scene made my nerves fray. It was a horrible moment that had thankfully passed.Eventually, I drifted back to sleep.I got up and headed to the bathroom, pausing to look at my little angel sleeping peacefully on the coverlet. At least he could sleep soundly. In the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and took a long, relaxing shower.Back in the room, Matthew was already awake, bouncing on the bed. He gave me a morning hug and kiss."Do you want to take a bath?" I asked."Yes!" he cheered.I filled the tub and helped him in. He loved splashing around, soaking my bathrobe. I didn't care; his contagious smile lifted my spirits. If he was having fun, so was I."Having fun, huh?""Yes, Mommy!" he nodded frantically."Well, you need to get out soon or you'll turn into a wrinkled rais

The cake turned out amazing, and we were already devouring our first slices. I cut a piece for Matt on a small plate and headed upstairs to bring some to Aleksander. He was on the phone.Something told me to stay outside the door and listen. Even though it was a terrible idea, I remained right there behind the wood."Sarah was with Elmo? Damn it! I had no idea she'd even been near my wife," he growled.I couldn't believe it.The memory hit me.Flashback—C-can I at least know your name? —I whispered, regretting it instantly. What on earth was I thinking asking that?—Why the hell would I tell you my name? —he snapped hostilely. —Pero since you want to know, and you'll be my new companion if Elmo doesn't sell you off, fine. My name is Sarah. I'm Sarah.End of FlashbackOf course it was her."I don't know..." he roared. "Her murder's going to get tied back to the mob, guaranteed, but she was just a trashy piece of work, and I couldn't care less. The only thing she was good for was in be

He wasn't expecting to see Grace here. What possible excuse could he give her now? My annoyance flared."What happened to you, Aleksander?" she blurted out, rushing forward to cover her mouth in shock.I had to move fast."Grace, don't panic," I told her, guiding her back onto the couch. "Just stay here."I grabbed Alek by the hand and pulled him toward the bedroom, dragging him into the en-suite bathroom to find the first-aid kit. My hands shook the entire time."Don't worry...""Don't worry?" I snapped."You can't just tell me not to worry, Alek," I growled. "Look at you. You need a doctor.""I'm not going to the hospital. It's just blood, and it's not even mine," he muttered casually."Whose life did you take this time?" I demanded, devastated by his brutality. "Take off your shirt, Aleksander. You reek.""I'm sorry.""Don't say you're sorry when you damn well aren't," I hissed. His torso was covered in dark bruises and cuts—the unmistakable signs of a brutal fight."Give me your a
