CHAPTER ELEVEN

WHY DIDN’T YOU?

AURORA

Something was changing.

Slowly.

Quietly.

And I had the terrifying feeling Aleksandr knew it too.

Which was probably why I had been staring at the same page for the last fifteen minutes.

There were words on it.

I knew that.

I recognized them individually.

I just had absolutely no idea what any of them said.

Because my brain had decided there was something much more important to think about.

Something embarrassing.

Something I absolutely did not want to ask.

CHAPTER FORTYTHE WAY OUTAURORA“Someone inside the Martago family.”Nobody moved.Nobody breathed. For several seconds, the only sound in the enormous palace foyer was the faint hum of the air conditioning.Whitney stared at Daniel. Her face had gone completely blank.“What does that mean?”Daniel still held my hand. His fingers were cold.Too cold. His body looked exhausted from the trip, but his eyes were sharp.Alert.Watching everything.Everyone.“It means exactly what I said.”Whitney stepped forward.“No.”Avery immediately moved with her.She didn’t seem to notice.“My parents are Clara and Dwayne Martago.”Daniel nodded.“I know.”“So if you’re about to accuse either of them—”“I’m not.”Whitney stopped.Daniel’s voice softened.“Clara and Dwayne had nothing to do with Elias.”Her shoulders dropped.Mine did too.Avery’s expression didn’t change. He remained watchful.“Then who?” he asked.Daniel looked toward the guards stationed around the foyer.“We shouldn’t discuss thi

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINEJUST IN CASEAURORABy the time I came out of the bathroom, Aleksandr had already showered in the second bathroom attached to the suite.Of course he had.Apparently the man could shower, dress, fix his hair, check his weapons, and probably overthrow a small country in the amount of time it took me to wash mine.He stood near the window.Black pants.Black shirt.Black boots. His long hair was still slightly damp, pulled back at the base of his neck.A gun sat beneath his shoulder holster.Another at his waist. And—I stopped.“Why do you have two guns?”He looked at me.“Because I only have two hands.”I stared.“That was not comforting.”“It was not supposed to be.”I looked down at myself.I’d chosen jeans and a soft dark-purple sweater.Nothing fancy.Nothing appropriate for meeting the biological father I’d believed was gone for most of my life. But what exactly did a woman wear to meet a father who had spent twenty-two years imprisoned by his own family?Ther

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHTYOU’VE BEEN WARNEDAURORABy the time we returned to Isla Palace, I was exhausted. Not sleepy. Not exactly. It was the kind of exhaustion that lived beneath my skin.Too much had happened. The cottage. The underground room.My mother’s letter. The photograph.Petrov.The gunfire.Mikhail.Daniel.My father.Alive.Those two words still didn’t seem real.My father was alive. And coming to Isla.I stepped through the palace doors with Aleksandr’s hand pressed against my lower back.Security was everywhere.More than before.Men at every entrance.Armed guards along the corridors.Avery’s people mixed with royal security.Doors that normally stood open were closed.Every person entering or leaving was being checked.Because Elias Vale was somewhere on Isla. And nobody knew where.Whitney entered behind us with Avery.“Where are my parents?”Avery didn’t stop walking.“Safe.”Whitney stopped.“Avery.”He turned. She crossed her arms.“Where are Clara and Dwayne?”“Som

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVENTHE PRISONER BENEATH THE ESTATEAURORA“The Volkov estate.”Three words. That was all.Three words that should not have been enough to make the entire world disappear around me.But they were. The ruined cottage vanished. The armed guards vanished. The blood in the grass. The bodies. The ocean crashing somewhere beyond the cliffs.Everything.All I could see was Anton Petrov sitting behind reinforced glass with blood drying beside his eye.And all I could hear was—The Volkov estate.Aleksandr moved first. His hand shot through the open rear door and wrapped around Petrov’s shirt.“What did you say?”Petrov didn’t flinch.“The Volkov estate.”Aleksandr dragged him forward.“Where?”Petrov smiled.“You know where.”“There are multiple properties.”“The mountain estate.”My stomach dropped.No.Not just any Volkov property. That estate. The place where Nikolai had taken me.The place where I had awakened chained in a windowless cell. The place where I had met Aleksa

Absolutely. Picking up the instant the gunshot explodes above the underground room, with the envelope still in Aurora’s hand.CHAPTER THIRTY-SIXTO MY DAUGHTERSAURORAThe gunshot exploded above us.Everything changed.Aleksandr moved before the echo died. One second he stood beside me.The next, his body slammed into mine and drove me down behind the metal table.“Aurora!”Another shot. Then another.Pop.Pop.Not close together. Not wild.Controlled.Outside.Avery grabbed Whitney and pulled her behind the concrete wall beside the stairs.Viktor drew his weapon.Anya dropped beside the cabinet. The underground room that had felt like a grave full of secrets seconds ago became something else entirely.A bunker.A trap.“Report,” Aleksandr snapped. His hand pressed against the back of my head. His body covered mine. The radio on Avery’s vest crackled.Static.Then—“Contact north side!”More gunfire erupted overhead.Whitney flinched.Avery shoved her farther behind him.“How many?”“

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVETHE KEYAURORAI woke up warm. That was the first thing I noticed. The second was that I couldn’t move.Something heavy was wrapped around my waist.Another something was beneath my head. And there was a leg tangled with mine.I opened my eyes.Black shirt.Tattooed arm.Very large hand resting across my stomach.Aleksandr.Memories returned slowly. The palace.Nikolai.Mikhail’s phone call. The birth certificate. The key.Elias.And then—I love you, Aurora. My heart did something embarrassing.I smiled. Then immediately stopped smiling because Aleksandr’s arm tightened.“You awake.”His voice was rough with sleep.I looked up.His eyes were still closed.“How do you know?”“You move.”“I barely moved.”“You breathe different.”I stared.“That’s creepy.”“Yes.”“You admit it?”“Yes.”I smiled again. His eyes opened.Dark.Sleepy.Beautiful.I had never seen him like this. Not alert. Not angry. Not watching doors. His hair had come loose during the night and spille
