"What a pleasant morning, Rosan,"

He gave small greetings to the Queen of the Voneveir Kingdom, his wife, who gave him nothing but a small, cold reply.

"Good morning."

In front of him, countless dishes were prepared on a long table. All seats had extravagant decorations, specially created to be solely used by the royals.

Soon, the door opened, revealing Allan, their son, the sole heir to the throne, and Rosan's beloved son.

"Good morning, Mother. Just seeing you reassures me that it will be a pleasant day."

He smiled brightly as he received a sweet and loving reply from his mother.

"Take your seat now. Let us enjoy the food while it is served hot."

"Yes, Mother."

Smiling at the sight, Alexis found this scene familiar, as it was what he always saw each morning when they all gathered for breakfast.

Marrying Rosan to have her family’s support was a mutual contract. He would have Rosan as the Queen to help him lead the kingdom, in exchange, she would have the power as the Queen. Even her family would have power as they were the family of Voneveir’s Queen. But not all marriages end up having love. Even though they already had a child, Allan, who was now of the right age to lead, he was born out of the responsibility to bear an heir who would lead the Voneveir when the time came.

"Allan, how was your study?"

"Good, just like what they are reporting to you."

Wanting to get closer, each time he tried to, he ended up building more walls that separated them. Until he no longer knew that those walls would one day be the reason why Allan was able to do a horrible thing to him.

"Your Majesty! Your Majesty!"

The head maid of the palace shouted, wanting to catch the attention of the king. But the guards wouldn’t let her get any closer. For having that attitude, she was under suspicion for not giving greetings before speaking.

"You have to see Her Majesty! She… she… fell from the tower! Your Majesty, Your Highness, the Queen…"

Problems after problems, he was not able to come up with a plan to address the drought that was happening in the west, and the soldiers were in panic as the other kingdom was raising their troops as if they were getting ready for a war. Adding up what he heard, his mind could not take it.

Shivering, he never thought that the day would come and this would happen. It was not part of what he hoped the future would be.

"Bring me to where she is."

He firmly said as he held his composure to not break.

Even if it was not love that led them to this marriage, even if he knew that she did not love him any bit, there was no way that Alexis would deny that he cared for Rosan. She was the most beautiful woman he ever met. She was the most calm and gentle flower he ever saw in a garden full of thorny ones.

But even if the marriage happened and he knew that Rosan did not like it any bit, he kept his thoughts saying it was for the kingdom. It was a responsibility that they had to fulfill. For the bright future of Voneveir.

It is for the greater good.

Walking at a pace faster than usual, clanging sounds of his garments could be heard hitting each other. On a fine day when the sun was so bright and shining above, birds chirping with their singing sounds, he saw the sight of the most beautiful flower he ever saw… covered in red with her own blood. Hands wide open… as if she accepted her fall.

"R-Rosan…"

He mumbled with his shaking voice. That is when Conor gave the order to let anyone else in here be gone. From what he saw, it was the very first time Alexis had that sorrowful tone. Not at the funeral of the former king, not even at the funeral of his mother, the former queen.

On a fine day that none would have ever thought something tragic would happen, on such a wonderful day that anyone who saw it would tell that it was a perfect day, no one would dare agree that it would be the best day for someone to die.

"Why…"

"M-Mother? Mo-Mother!!"

Pushing Alexis away, even if Allan was just a prince and Alexis was the king, it seemed like he had no care for what he was doing. Pushing him away, he caressed Rosan’s body, kissing her forehead as he let tears fall from his eyes.

"Mother, wake up! Mother! You promised to travel with me… didn’t you? Who did this to you? Who did this!!"

Shouting as he sobbed, he then had his face turn mad as he looked at the guards.

"What are you doing standing still?!! Didn’t you see??! My mother was hurt! Go call the physician right now! Call the mages, the healers, call them in this instant!!!"

"Allan…"

He called, wanting to wake up his son who still had hope that Rosan would wake up if those he called would arrive. Indeed, he did not wish to accept the fact that when someone loses their heartbeat… when someone stops breathing… all things are gone.

"She is gone…"

Hearing those words from his father, whom he never even recognized as his, he could not help but explode in anger.

"You… this is all your fault. This is all your fault!! If not for you then Mother would still be alive!! What good are you as a king if even you can’t save her life??! Tell me!!"

"Allan… I never wanted this to happen-"

Slapping his hand away, his son’s eyes filled with nothing but despise looked at him. As if he was looking at the most horrible sight of a being he could ever see. As if he wasn’t looking at the king… or his father.

.

.

.

Looking at his reflection with his face having cotton on his nose and a bandage on his elbow, Alex was well aware of how useless he was. Even as a king, he had no power at all. He didn’t even know how to protect himself and those that he wanted to protect.

"I am useless…"

He uttered, making Cielo hear what he said.

"Even a sword is useless when not sharpened. Is it not?"

Cielo was now wearing clothes that were his usual. With Frank sleeping on the only bed they had in that room, he was leaning on the corner of the stairs while looking at Alex.

"Brother Cielo…"

"What?"

"Help me."

"What??"

Confused by what Alex was saying, it was his first time seeing those eyes in others. As if they were shouting in determination that no one could even stop him from doing so.

'Seems like this kid finally found his goal.'

"I want you to help me… help me be strong."

'Did I have those eyes when I made my decision to go here and earn money?'

Cielo chuckled at his thought, thinking that what he was feeling might be the same as what his mother felt when he made that big decision he knew no one could hinder him in doing so.

"Get strong?"

"Yes, teach me everything you know. I want to be strong… enough to protect myself so that no one will protect me…"

'So that no one will die because of me…'

"And so that I can protect those I cherish…"

His words were carved in Cielo’s mind.

"Protecting those you cherish… I like that. Sure. But let me remind you, kid, that getting stronger is not like sleeping and waking up. You must remember that you have to get through lots of hell. Lots…."

  • King's Revenge   Chapter 25: Epilogue

What exactly is revenge? To pay back what they have done to you? But isn’t it something that only bad people would do? Good people will just let the world make the judgment and payment for what they have done. That is why karma exists. But for some reason, even the world is making fun of one’s life. Just why can’t we just live happily? Why do we need to suffer? Why do we have to face such cruel things? Isn’t it unfair? Living that way while others can live happily just because the world gives them a favor? Isn’t it unfair that things are difficult for you to get just because you were born as you are? Isn’t it unfair that things work so differently for everyone? They say that if it was meant to be, things will be. But what if I do not wish for it to be like that? Why can’t I make changes no matter how much I try? “So you are still here. Where is that scumbag? ” Blood can be seen covering his body. I know that Clad killed many people. For some, he would surely be a villain. He is ta

  • King's Revenge   Chapter 24: Allan's Fate

It was something that Clad did not notice sooner. But Alex's way of taking, it changed. As if he became someone else. ‘I see. So he dropped the honorifics. Strange, but why did he suddenly stop calling me Brother Clad? ’ The moment he heard Alex's voice calling upon his name, he was surprised to feel that gaze. As if he were talking before someone who holds great power. ‘What happened to him? ’ He asks himself, still trying to give all his power to tear Allan apart. But nothing changed. Even an inch was left untouched, even if he gave his all-out force. “Alex, stop this at once!! ” With that gaze, he was sure that it was something that scared him so much. ‘What is up with him? ’ “Clad, that is enough.” "You don’t tell me what I would do and would not do. I don’t even care why you started to act like that and I don’t even want to know. But you know what? Leave me be. I don’t care what you want to achieve. Just leave me be! Just like what you did when Frank died!" Pain. That is

  • King's Revenge   Chapter 23: I Will Kill You

“Hah, to think that you would appear right before me... You really have guts, huh? ” He is afraid. That was certain. To think that the one he was looking for was now in front of him, he did not expect it to be that way. No guards can be seen in the vicinity as the only thing around them is the surface of the dungeon. “You surely are one hell of a guy, Clad.” ‘Just how powerful can he be to be able to do this? Why…. Why, of all people? He is not even a royal! That father of mine, it would be a convenience if he just left even a useful power, but he gave me none other than this hellish life! ’ Cursing, his inferiority complex again appeared before him. His nerves made him feel weak. His body can’t even stand up properly. Allan knows too well that this might be the end of his life. “And so are you, Allan.” “What did you do to those two? I am sure Blance and Sigrid were there. Did you perhaps kill them as well? ” A small smirk then crept on his lips as he heard what Allan asked. But

"Cielo, be safe, you idiot." Ranz mumbled as soon as he got the gold coins, based on their plan. Indeed, Cielo succeeded in their plan. But he is still worried about whether he will succeed in getting out of that. For sure, his life is in danger as Ranz is heading to church. ‘To give a bounty payment in the guise of offerings just to save his sister... I didn’t know that Cielo would really do that. I am sure that that Alex guy is someone he knew, but to do that just for this... Cielo...' He shook his head. He does not really approve of this, but still, that guy is a friend of his. and even if it wasn’t something that can easily be done, even just a little. He wants to help that guy who reached his hand when all the people are scared by even landing a gaze on him. ‘Even if you have ulterior motives for friending me, I know you see me as a friend, even just a little. For you to believe in me... Hah, you idiot... You really are a big idiot, Cielo’ … In times when death is in front o

“Sigrid and Blanche... from five cavalry knight’s captain generals... Only the two of you are left. I assume you are not like those three. Useless fools that can’t even fight two pests! ” In front of the King of Voneveir, King Allan, they are also part of those who planned the beheading of the former king, Alexis. Not saying a single word, they just bowed their heads and waited for the order that Allan would give them. ‘They just got lucky that I am not there. But to think that the two swords of the generals are slain like that, just who the hell are those guys that did that? ’ “Clad, that guy who is the last descendant of the Higgens. Clad Volmar. Connor’s grandson, I knew that one day he would be back to get his revenge, which is why I told you to take his life as soon as possible. This is the result of you neglecting your job! Are you aware of the sin you have committed? ” Slamming the table, Allan was mad. He is so mad that his head is a shade of red. But the two generals remai

  • King's Revenge   Chapter 20: Betrayal V

Alex POV How long has it been since I last slept well? Since when was the last time that I didn’t have a nightmare? Even when I am still the king in the past life I remember, there wasn’t a time when I could sleep so calmly. Even if the palace was guarded so well, the whole place itself can't be trusted. After all, as the king, the more power it holds… the greater danger it gives. Letting out a deep sigh as I gaze at the sky above, I care no less about what might happen to me. How funny I think it is… before… I am doing my best to save my kingdom… save my people… but now… I… I don’t know why it falls to this. I did not even wish to see this. I did not wish for all of this to happen… ‘Did you really not?’ Quickly standing up, I was surprised to hear words coming from somewhere. This is so secluded that no other person than me and Brother Clad is here… but… I am not speaking so loud. How come he hears those? And that voice? Is it really Brother Clad? Turning around I tried to look

  • King's Revenge   Chapter 19: Betrayal IV

“Right, that was nice. At least you have a decent mind for things as such.” Clad mumbled as he watched Alex build up his mana. It’s been a week since that incident happened. As much as he wanted to, he wanted to be back in that palace to crush that king as well as those who were involved in the matter. But his mana is not enough for him to let him. After causing a big ruckus over what happened last time, he can’t help but admit the fact that he did cause great chaos in that land. But all of it is not enough. It isn’t even half enough of what he wanted to happen. 'Go. Why don’t you head there now? You can surely kill him if you do that, don't you want to see him be destroyed?’ Shaking his head again, for some reason that voice keeps coming into his head. It wasn’t like that the last time. But it all started when he used that forbidden skill that he stole from the treasury. He knows that none of the elders in his family, not even Conor, will use that scroll. But when things did not

  • King's Revenge   Chapter 18: Betrayal III

All people are born kind, and they just grew up being bad. That is one of the things that Allan will never forget. After all, it came from his dear mother whom he loves so much. But on a cold night, with his eyes just staring at the ceiling, it’s been so long since he changed into his nightgown for him to rest. ‘I have to sleep, yet here I am. Still wide awake’ Brushing away those thoughts, he changed his position. Silence. Even with him finding the most comfortable position he could ever have just for him to fall asleep, it was all in vain. “Hah” Finally, he gave up on doing so. After all, he would just be wasting his time rolling around as he couldn’t find the right place to sleep. “Tch, this is all that damn man’s fault! ” Standing up, he picks up the sword that was hanging on top of his bed. It was the same sword that his father used, and it was also the same sword that he used to kill his very own father. “When things are getting messy, all I can think of is that it was y

They say that when the sun is out, the moon will rise. The night will come as soon as the light is gone. The sky will be full of thousands of dots. Varies of colors with glimmering lights. But when the sun is nowhere to be found, that is when the monsters will go around. That is when their fangs will show as they open their mouth. “One bottle of rum, here you go! ” The tavern is full of people. Most of them are adventurers who just got back from doing their commissions. Having a small stay in this small yet cozy tavern has become part of their everyday habit as soon as the moon shows up. “Hahh, this tastes so good! ” “Cheers!” "HAHAAHAH, AND I SMASH IT IN ONE GO! BOOSH, HAH, I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD KILL A BUNCH OF SLIMES IN AN INSTANT. IT WAS TOO ANNOYING." “Now that you mentioned it, it feels like the forest is getting weird.” "YOU, SCARDY CAT!!” Cups of their drinks can be heard clashing down the table. Although it wasn’t in the form of taking out their anger, they all know t
