Caden's POV

The palace dining room had high ceilings and windows that ran from floor to near the top of the wall.

I sat across from my father and ate my meal.

A servant refilled the water glasses and stepped back without a sound. My father cut into his food with the precision of someone who didn't waste anything.

"Tell me about the camp."

"It went well. I came first in the rankings. Director Steele has selected me to represent Ironridge in the senior division at the interschool competition."

Vessa's POVI couldn't sleep.I lay in my bed long after the lights went out and stared at the ceiling with my arms folded across my chest. Kayla and the other girls in the room were already asleep. I could hear their breathing, slow and even, unbothered. The sound irritated me more than it should have.I turned onto my side and stared at the wall instead.Mira had won her first round match. That wasn't how things were supposed to go. I had watched the fight from the viewing area with my arms crossed and my jaw tight. I watched Mira take a talon blow to her arm and keep moving. I watched her absorb a wing strike to the ribs and not go down. I watched her fight like she had something to prove to every single person in that arena. When the eagle shifter surrendered, I looked away. I hated that she won. My thoughts kept circling back to my father's decision at the hearing. If he hadn't saved her, she would be out of this competition by now. I needed to speak to him.I got up quietly a

Mira's POV I pressed myself against the wall and tried not to breathe too loud. My heart slammed against my ribs. They were talking about me. They had to be. The seal. The shift. It matched everything Alina had told me. Yes, they didn't mention my name, but I was the only beastless Omega around. Nobody else was here without a beast. None that I've met so far. I leaned in closer. My shoulder brushed the wall and I steadied myself. I needed a name. A face. Anything to hold on to. The voices dropped even lower. I strained to hear them but I could only catch fragments now. Something about timing. Something about the competition. Then a word I couldn't make out, followed by silence. I looked at the door again. What if I went in and checked who was talking about me? A wave of fear swept through me. I had no idea what was waiting beyond the door. The last thing I wanted was to walk into a dangerous situation. My curiosity was stronger than my desire for self preservation. I took on

Mira's POVThis arena was nothing like the courtyard at Ironridge. It was a proper fighting space. High walls on three sides, an open roof that let the morning sky sit over everything, tiered viewing areas along both sides already filling up with students from every school.I stood at the edge of the entrance and took it all in.At Ironridge there had been a rough circle of students and phones recording. This was different. It was massive. I could feel the difference in the air."Up next is Mira Larsen versus Tanya Lorde." I walked through the entrance and into the ring. The noise from the viewing area shifted when I appeared. I heard whistles and boos as I got into the ring. I clenched my fists and flared my nostrils. Being an underdog was nothing new to me. I would earn the respect I deserved in the ring. Tanya Lorde walked in from the opposite side. She was taller than I had expected. Long-limbed and loose in her movement, the kind of ease that came from years of training a shif

Caden's POVBastian drummed his fingers on his thighs. "I got the candidate from Stormveil.""You'll win," Riven said, not looking up from his phone."Obviously. I'm just noting the level."Cael was cleaning his boots on the other side of the room. He didn't comment. He'd been paired with Josh Calloway of Westhill. Cael had the toughest matchup in our group. My first round opponent was from Duskwall. Senior division, ranked third in their school's internal assessments according to the information sheet attached to the pairing. Strong record. Clean technique.I would win. That wasn't confidence for its own sake, it was just how I'd been trained to assess a situation. I had the information I needed and had done the preparation. I would go in, I would read the fight quickly, and I would end it.What I was actually thinking about was the training session tomorrow morning.I couldn't stop thinking of what else to teach her. What she still needed. What would actually make a difference in th

Mira's POVThe tournament fixture went up right after the orientation ended. Students pushed in from every angle, craning necks, standing on their toes.I joined the back of the crowd and worked my way through. Nobody moved for me. I squeezed between shoulders and elbows until I was close enough to read. The list ran in columns. School name, candidate name, opponent. I scanned down until I found Westhill— Mira Larsen. Eastmark— Tanya Lorde.I read it twice and then stepped back out of the crowd.Tanya Lorde. I didn't know the name. Had no information about her and the first round was tomorrow.I walked back to the dormitory with my hands in my jacket and my mind already working.Serena was on her bed when I got in, lying on her stomach with her phone propped up in front of her. She looked up when I came through the door and then she looked away.We hadn't spoken to each other since I lashed out at her.I stopped at the foot of her bed. "Serena."She sat up and looked at me, waiting.

Caden's POVThe orientation hall was full by the time I arrived with Riven, Bastian and Cael. Candidates from every school was already seated or finding seats when we got there. We took seats near the middle section. Riven dropped into the chair beside me and Bastian took the one on my other side. Cael sat in front of us and immediately stretched his legs out under the seat ahead. The lead instructor stepped onto the platform. The noise in the room died down. Something about the way he stood up there made people stop talking without being asked."This competition is not just about trophies," he said. "It's not about rankings or school reputation or where your name ends up on a board."The hall was even more quiet than before."The winners of this competition will be inducted into the Sentinel Accord."Sentinel Accord...I'd heard the name before. Everyone had heard the name. It lived in old texts and in the conversations that adults had when they thought young people weren't listening
