LOGINAriana's POV
Uncle Zack? I craned my neck as I tried to confirm if he was truly the one seated at the dining table. Masculine laughter rumbled in the atmosphere, competing with Mom's light ones. It was definitely him. Mom never brought any of her suitors home. Probably one of her strict principles. Then again, relief washed over me knowing both Mom and Uncle wouldn't notice my presence, and I could sneak into my room and enjoy the sanctity of isolation. My day was bad enough as it is. That didn't stop my heart from ripping apart at the sound of Mom's laughter. She never laughed with me. And I mean the genuine, carefree ones. Away from outsiders. Except when she had to fake it to keep the happy mom and daughter facade. But I ignored the nasty feeling in my chest as I walked towards the hallway leading to my room. It was best to end my day with no drama. That's the least the universe owed me for losing my job with no explanation. “Ariana!” Mom called. Shutting my eyes tightly, my teeth clenched as I paused. “Come say hello to your Uncle Zack.” She said. My brow raised as I twirled around. Really? Since when did Uncle Zack treat me like his niece? He is as cold as Mom. Even colder because he barely acknowledges me. Walking up to them, I greeted, “Hi, Uncle Zack.” Not only did he not respond, but he also gave me a condescending glance before focusing his attention on stabbing his fork into the steak and cheese in front of him. I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't expecting it. Gesturing at the seat across from hers, she set her plate aside. “Sit, my dear.” Cracking my knuckles, I took the seat. No matter how endearing Mom's words sounded, they never failed to give that tone of detachment. Like she said the words for the sake of it. “So have you decided to quit the job at the hospital?” She asked, hardly looking at me as she poured him a cold glass of orange juice. Her words rang in my ears like a discordant chord This was it. As always, the universe always worked in her favor. From defending my job earlier today and coming back without it… I dig my nails into my lap, suppressing the urge to scream. But my face managed to stay neutral as I tried to form words in my head. “Well, I… I kind of…. “You lost it?” He asked, cutting me off, and my face paled. Coughing a laugh, he pushed his plate aside, leaning closer. “You really did?” Looking at Mom, he repeated, “Cici, she really did lose it.” I looked at Mom's facial expression, and she hid a small smile as she stood, clearing his plates from the table. Biting my lips, I trapped any sound that could come out. I shut out the voices in my head encouraging me to flare up. Get mad. Vent out to Mom to ask why she was treating me this way. But the way the stiffness in my chest would betray me when those tears started rolling down my cheeks. “Relax, Zk, let her speak for herself.” Her tone was casual, but I didn't miss the satisfaction in it. Pushing the chair back, I stood up, trying to ease the knot in my chest by taking a deep breath… “Yes, I lost it. That doesn't mean I changed my mind. I'd be crashing at Zoey's until I find a new job.” At my words, Mom's expression turned sour, but she slowly took a seat, running her red-polished nails through her golden hair. “You know I'll hate to threaten that sweet friend of yours to keep you out of her home, baby. Don't push me.” As usual, her words sounded lighter than her stone-cold tone, and something in me knew she had it in her to do even worse. Uncle Zack suddenly banged the table, and I flinched. “See, I warned you not to be so lenient with her. Now look how she's going against the adults. Very rude.” His eyes flickered between me and Mom. Lenient? That could have been valid if Mom saw me as worth her attention. That's what I am. Worthless, unloved. And for some reason, this rebelling took some weight off my chest. The weight of suffering in silence. It was sinfully gratifying. “My job meant everything to me. This city, my friends, I'm not leaving all of that to move in with you….. “And who gave you all of that?” Mom cut me off. “I took all that weight and responsibility and raised you without help all these years, and this is how you repay me?” She asked. For a brief moment, our eyes met. I could see a flash of pain in them, but she looked away immediately. Was she insinuating that she threw her life away by raising me? As if she did a favor raising her own child. Like I was supposed to worship the ground she walked because she fended for me all these years. “I told you it wasn't worth sacrificing for her after he left.” Zack added. He left. Those two words were enough to send threatening tears burning my eyelids. “I'm sorry, but I'll be at Zoey's place.” I rushed off, desperate to save my tears till I got into the safety of my little room. “Come back here!” He ordered, but I was long gone. I didn't want to think about Dad. Why he left, why he'd never contacted us ever again. Did he hate me that much? These thoughts ran through my mind, silent tears flowing freely down my cheeks as I leaned against the door. I hated it here, the way I was feeling, and everything else. Packing my night bag, I left for Zoey's place without calling her up. That was a first. The minute I stepped into her doorway, I gasped. “Zoey.”Gideon's POV My arm ached. In fact, my whole body did. But seeing Ariana’s angelic face in front of me, her chestnut brown hair tied up in a messy bun with those strands sticking to her forehead. The way her eyes bulged as she stared at my open wound and how soft and tender her fingers felt in mine made everything better. For a minute, I imagined throwing away my past and deleting every sinful, dark history of mine so I’d start on a clean slate. A clean slate where I can start over again with her by my side. But Derek wouldn't want that. He made me vow to protect her. I owed him at least that. “I…don't…u…understand you or—" she paused. “I'll just go get Mom for you.” She said, standing on her feet, but I pulled her back, causing her to stumble before landing on my lap. “Gideon.” She warned, wriggling from my hold. I groaned as her movement made the bones under my wound snap, and she froze. “I'm sorry. Did I make it hurt?” She stopped protesting as she reached for the arm,
Ariana’s POV Martins knocked, and on confirmation from Liam, he stepped aside, and I went in. I found Liam on call with someone over the landline, and I dug my nails into my palms as I waited, desperate to get this done and over with. When he placed the phone down, he lifted his eyes, gesturing to the chair across from him. “Take a seat, Ariana.” I stood still. Unmoving. My eyes only flicked to him sometimes, while the rest of the time they were on the files on his desk. “I think it's inappropriate for me to take a seat in my boss’s office without an appointment.” I said, and Liam folded his arms across his chest. “But I'm giving you permission to. It's personal.” Brushing a stubborn strand out of my face, I bit my lips. “Personal. That's the problem. I think we're getting too personal." He adjusted in his seat, folding his brows. “Are you saying I make you uncomfortable?” “No. But you watching my every move and bossing me around isn't far from it.” I blurted, regrettin
Ariana's POV “Mafia?” I repeated, nodding as if I understood a thing.A smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he observed me.“You don't really believe me, do you?”Wetting my lips, my eye flicked from the file to his eyes."Um... I think there are a lot of things beyond human understanding so I'll take your words for it.” “You see, I wish it was that simple.”He leaned back into the chair.“Finding myself in front of this desk and being in charge of bringing healing to these people. It's a miracle.”“Why do you think it is?” I asked. He gave a faraway look as if contemplating whether to say it or not.“I could have been among the ones that needed healing. There was a 99% chance.”My heart squeezed in empathy, and I found myself reaching for his hands.“I don't know anything about the mafia. But if it makes you feel better. I'd say you turned out fine.”“Getting yourself out was a brave thing to do.” I said, and he covered my hands with his own. That was when I shifted in my sea
Ariana's POV The atmosphere shifted as I sensed Mom's arm wrapped around mine, her nails digging into the blades of my shoulder.I didn’t feel pain that much. At least not on the outside.“She's…just a kid. You know how kids like to do whatever they want.” Mom chuckled dryly as she kept her eyes on Vincent, whose focus was now on the screen in front of him.Gideon’s desktop.“This child looks well over 20, Cici. Not a kid.” He said, and Mom's face creased a bit.Probably not liking how he put his words.“We're just trying to keep her safe, not cage her. Next time try harder to get her to open up about where she's going.” He finished, a condescending tone to his words, and my brow rose a bit as Mom wet her lips, swallowing words.Well, was it normal to talk to your cousin’s wife like she’s no better than a help? Rude. And what did he say about me looking a lot like Dad? “Did you say you knew—“ “Time to go now. Don't distract your uncle.” Mom cut me off, literally dragging me out of
Ariana's POV When our eyes met, she smiled down at me, the corners of her lips twitching a bit. Then she took the seat next to me. “How's everyone doing?” She asked, her eyes still on me. I flashed a tight smile at her before turning to Liam, who loosened his tie, shifting in his seat. “No, how are you? Oh, I know, you're glowing.” Ella complimented, but she waved it off. “Don’t start, Ella. I’m not.” She said. “Won't you say hi to Liam? I love cool exes.” The younger guy next to Codey blurted, and everyone including me, exchanged uncomfortable glances. “Tim, next time read the room.” Codey said under his breath, but I read his lips. Ella nudged him to stop talking while he gave the "Whattt!" Look Liam just turned to her, stretching his hand from across me to her for a handshake. “Nice to see you, Pen. It's been a while.” He said, his face expressionless even as Pen took his hand, forcing a smile. “Same here. Maybe I should have stopped myself from coming to sa
Ariana's POV I found myself backing into a corner. Fortunately, a car was parked just behind me. Probably the owner thought it made sense to park right in front of someone's house. Then I crouched behind it, my heart thumping so loud that I could hear it. Curiosity ate me up, and I cocked my head from around the corner of the car, peeking. An average-height man, whom I didn't recognize, stepped out of the car, his hair shaved and in a black suit, as he was on the phone. I couldn't make out what he was saying or the language itself. Not like it was any of my business. But he was right in front of our house. Soon, he started walking towards our house, and he unbuckled his fly as if he wanted to pee. The next thing I saw was a flash of metal, he turned it in his hand as he lifted it up. My face paled, and my palms pressed against the car went cold as I spotted a gun… Who was he, and why was he in front of our house with a gun? On impulse, I dipped my hand into my bag for my
Ariana’s POV Mr. Ferrari was the Gideon? Our eyes met, and my heart dropped to my stomach. “Hi Ariana, your mom couldn't stop talking about her little princess. Come here, let me see you.” He said. Looking to Mom, I caught the slight frown in her expression, but my gaze settled on Gideon.
Gideon's POV My eyes stayed glued to the monitor as I watched Ariana look around surreptitiously, like a victim in a horror movie who was thrust into the middle of a haunted house by a ghost. Then the spotlight came on her, and now she's terrified, trying to find the person, or rather the ghos
Ariana's POV She was passed out by the door, her head buried between her knees, and I had to exert all my energy dragging her inside. I managed to put her on the couch before I noticed how carelessly she left all her windows open… That was the good thing about living alone. Freedom. But for
Ariana's POV Following me into the room, she said, “Ari? Come on, don't be mad.” Even my close friend had to be put in an uncomfortable situation because of my mom. It's no wonder why I only had few friends Zoey had stubbornly stuck to me, so I let her in. That's exactly why I stopped
