Elena ~

My heart was pounding so loud it almost drowned out my breathing the car had stopped just inches from something, and I blinked hard through tears, my chest heaving like I'd run for miles. For a second I thought it was a person, my whole body freezing up until the streetlamp's faint light hit and I saw it a small cat trembling right in front of my car. I let out a shaky breath, pressing my hand over my heart.

"God… it's just a cat."

My fingers trembled as I unbuckled and stepped out into the cold, biting night air that felt too real against my skin. My knees still weak, I crouched slowly so I wouldn't scare it.

"Hey… it's okay," I whispered, my voice breaking between the words.

The cat stared back wide-eyed and frightened for a moment, then darted across the road and that's when I saw headlights blinding mer, a truck's horn screaming through the night racing straight for it.

I couldn't move, my mind blank, body numb in that frozen second until a strong arm grabbed my waist and yanked me back hard I stumbled right into a solid chest, the air whooshing out of me as the truck thundered past, missing us by inches, its wind brushing cold and violent against my face.

My knees buckled completely.

"What the hell were you thinking?"

The voice was low, deep, furious.

I turned and my heart stopped it wasn't Alex, it was Adrian, Alex's brother, his dark eyes catching mine under the streetlight, sharp and burning with restrained anger, his jaw tight, his grip still firm around my waist like he hadn't realized he was holding me.

"You could've been killed, Elena," he said, his voice rough from somewhere deep, the kind that commanded silence without trying.

I swallowed hard, unable to look away as the city went quiet around us, just the two of us standing too close, breathing too fast. He finally let go, his hands falling away but leaving this ghost of warmth that wouldn't fade.

"What were you even doing here?" he asked, tone sharp but steady.

"I… I didn't mean to," I stammered, brushing my hair back. "It was just… there was a cat."

"A cat?" he repeated, disbelief edging his voice. "Do you even hear yourself?"

I bit my lip, eyes stinging again. "I didn't want it to get hurt," I whispered, hating how small and broken I sounded, like all the hurt from Alex had shrunk me down to nothing.

He stared at me for a long second, anger still simmering but something else flickering in his eyes too something unreadable that made my chest twist. Finally he muttered,

"Next time, try not to die for a stranger's pet."

I almost smiled but it came out broken, and before I could say anything his voice cut through lower this time.

"You were crying."

I froze, throat tightening as he stepped closer.

"Your eyes," he said quietly. "They're red. Tear-stained."

I turned away, blinking hard. "It's nothing."

"Doesn't look like nothing."

The calm, steady way he said it, too observant, made my chest ache worse, and suddenly in that dim light I couldn't hold it anymore.

"It's Alex," I whispered, barely getting his name out.

Adrian's jaw tightened instantly, his expression shifting darker.

"What about him?"

I let out a bitter laugh that turned into a sob. "You really want to know?"

He just looked at me, waiting.

"He was at the club," I said, voice shaking. "With someone else. Another girl. He kissed her like I never even existed."

The words hung heavy between us, suffocating, and I saw Adrian's hands curl into fists, his eyes darkening like he'd known Alex would screw up and hated being right.

"Elena…" he started, then stopped, running a hand over his jaw like he was holding back a storm.

I laughed softly, wiping tears. "It's funny, isn't it? You plan your whole day around someone, thinking they're your forever, and then they destroy you just like that two years of my life, all those promises, gone because he couldn't keep his hands off some random girl while I waited like an idiot."

He looked at me then, really looked, something fierce flashing in his eyes.

"He doesn't deserve you."

That hit different the quiet, raw finality of it felt like a verdict, like someone finally saw my worth when Alex never had, and for a long moment we just stood there, the night still and heavy around us, the city holding its breath.

Maybe it was the heartbreak ripping through me, or maybe the way his eyes softened like he actually saw me when I'd felt invisible all night, but in that one reckless second I couldn't stop myself I leaned in closer, my hand brushing his chest, the air between us electric and dangerous, my heart racing for all the wrong reasons now.

  • Kissed My Ex's Brother    Secret Admirer

Lila's POV Elena barely disappeared through the door wrapped up in Adrian's arms before I flopped back down onto my squishy couch, balancing the popcorn bowl carefully on my lap while the rom-com kept flickering away on the TV screen like absolutely nothing dramatic had just happened between those two. Her infectious laughter still echoed softly through the apartment, that warm glow lingering in the air even after their steamy little exit, so I scooped up another handful of those buttery kernels and munched away slowly, letting the familiar dialogue wash over me like comfort food for both my stomach and my soul after such a long time apart.
