Dax

He pulls me against his body before my second hand lands in the blankets.

No patience.

His mouth is already open against mine, fever-hot, and his want slams into my want and the two of them stop being separate things. It comes back around bigger. Then bigger again. There's no ceiling on this. We keep finding that out.

Three days ago the bond was a miracle. Tonight it's an accelerant.

I had a plan. Slow hands. Careful. A gentleman's pace.

"I had a plan," I tell his mouth.

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 42 – The Loud One

MatoI don’t actually think I can move.My knees stopped reporting in a while ago, there’s a cupboard handle digging into my spine, and I’ve been hard for so long it’s less of a condition now and more of a personality. None of it matters. He said don’t move with his face in my neck, grinning, so I’m staying put.He slides off my thigh and kneels up between my legs, on a floor that’s going to need serious mopping after this, with his hair flattened on one side from hiding in my neck.“Up,” he says.“You just said don’t move.”“Now I’m saying up. I want you standing for this.”He’s got plans for me, and I’m not about to argue.Getting off a floor at my size takes a hand on the counter and a crack from both knees like somebody breaking kindling. I’m not aging like a human, they don’t ache, but the joints still have something to say.Cody watches the whole performance from down there with his chin up, enjoying it.He reaches up, takes my hands off my hips and puts them on the counter behi

Cody“Thanks, Mom,” I say.It comes out warm and polite, exactly like the guy on the podcast, and I’m smiling so hard at Mato’s shirt that my cheeks ache.“Have you eaten yet?”“Just about to.” The beef’s stone cold in the pan by now and nowhere near done. “Love you. I’ll call you tomorrow.”“Love you too!”I hang up before she can say anything else nice to me.I reach up, shove my phone in the cutlery drawer myself and slam it shut so hard it rattles. My face is still doing the smile. I make it stop.Mato hasn’t moved. His hands are on my hips, and he’s watching me like I’m a stretch of road he’s pretty sure has black ice on it.“Don’t,” I tell him, the second he opens his mouth. “Don’t you dare ask me if I’m okay.”“I wasn’t. I was going to say you need sustenance. You haven’t eaten anything since breakfast except half a block of cheddar.”“Cheddar’s a food group.”“Not in this house, it isn’t.”“If the next word out of your mouth is dinner, I’m moving back onto your couch.”He thin

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 40 – Easy Questions

Mato“Hide this from me,” Cody says, and slaps his phone down on the counter next to the stove. “Somewhere I’ll never find it. I mean it.”He’s checked it every time I’ve turned my back since I walked in the door. Before I got home, he grated an entire block of cheese for two people. There’s a mountain of it on the cutting board, and it gets smaller every time I look, because he keeps eating it by the handful.Sloane said the episode goes up today. She didn’t say what time, and he’s been anxiously pacing the house all afternoon waiting for it.Under all that cheddar, he smells terrified, and he’s working very hard to look like he isn’t.I pick the phone up, open the cutlery drawer and put it face down on top of the forks.“Oh, come on,” Cody says. “That’s the first place I’d look.”“Because you’re a werewolf and you can smell where it is. But we both know you’d check my pockets first anyway.”“Well, obviously. But that’s just for fun.”He grins at me, cheeky as hell, and for about a s

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 39 – No Comment

Cody“Sloane’s at the gate,” Mato says, the second I pick up. “She’s asking for you. Dax and Noah are already down there, and I’m about two minutes out.”I’m curled up on Mato’s couch with a cereal bowl balanced on my knee, and the spoon freezes in midair.Of course she found the Reserve. It couldn’t have been all that difficult once she had Mato’s name and started asking around town where he lives.I would have liked a few more days of pretending she wouldn’t come looking here. She has no idea there’s a werewolf pack living here, but it would be so much better for everyone if she wasn’t hanging around.“You don’t have to come down,” Mato says. “Dax can send her away, or I can. If you do come, I’m not leaving your side for a second.”He’s not bossing me around. He’s laying out my choices, and whichever one I pick, he’s in. God, I love this man.“I’m coming,” I tell him.“Okay. I’ll see you there.”I put the cereal on the floor and go hunting for my coat and boots.Staying in here woul

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 38 – Show Him Around

Mato“When I said I’d do every job on the fence line, boss, I was picturing a lot less carrying trees.”Rafe has the thick end of the spruce limb up on one shoulder, and he’s carrying it like it weighs nothing at all.“The snow brought it down across the fence last night,” I tell him. “That makes it today’s job. Tomorrow there’ll be some other job nobody wants.”“Lucky for you, I’m good at every one of them.”Unfortunately, he is. I’ve been waiting all morning for him to drop something, and he hasn’t.Finn’s sensor on this section went off at six, and his text said he’s shut the power off on this side until we clear it. I still checked it myself before I let Rafe near it.I’m not putting my hands on that fence just because somebody texted me it’s off.Rafe drops his piece on the brush pile, goes straight back for the next one and hauls that too, without anybody asking him. It’s been like that since we got here. He’s fast, he’s strong and he never has to be shown anything twice, which

Cody“No wolf should be eating every meal alone, no matter how good a cook he is,” Kelly says, sliding another slice of gammon onto Rafe’s plate.“I’m a really fantastic cook,” Rafe tells her.“I’m sure you are, honey. Eat.”He still has three uneaten slices of meat on his plate and Kelly keeps adding more.“I’m your son,” Dax says. “Your actual son. I’m sitting right here.”“And you know perfectly well how a serving spoon works, sweetheart. Rafe’s new, he’s probably still feeling a bit shy about helping himself.”I try to turn my laugh into a cough.Rafe gives her the smile he used on me in the park, right before he asked me to dinner. Maybe it’s working on her. Or maybe she can smell how long it’s been since anybody cooked him a meal.Kelly only tells you what she’s picked up on when she’s good and ready, and sometimes that’s never.I’m glad Mato talked Dax into giving Rafe a chance. In spite of his swagger, I know he’s lonely. Then Rafe turns the smile on me. “Did Mato tell you the

NoahThe wolf hits it like a truck, and the thing barely rocks.Wrong.Two hundred pounds of Alpha at a dead run should fold anything with a spine. This rotten thing takes the hit, slides back a boot-length in the dirt, and swings an arm the size of my leg.The wolf has to wrench sideways midair to

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 4 – Downwind

DaxFor the last hour I've been telling myself I'm only out here to keep the idiot from getting himself killed. It's a good lie.Responsible.Very Alpha. The kind of thing my father would've said with a straight face right before going off and doing exactly what he wanted.Truth is, I caught his tr

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 2 – Heel

DaxThe wolf wants to turn around. He's wanted to turn around since I cleared the fence, and he isn't being quiet about it, because quiet isn't a thing he owns.He just keeps shoving the same word into the back of my skull like a toddler with a doorbell.Ours.Ours, ours, ours."He's a hunter," I t
