"You can leave that, dear. He won't notice whether it's clean, he’s barely more than a beast."

Kelly doesn't stop scrubbing.

She's been at the kitchen sink since Ezequiel finished his dinner, washing a pot that was clean half an hour ago, just to avoid being in the same room as him. Her hands are red to the wrists, and she's pretending I'm not here.

I hop up onto the steel counter beside her and let my bare feet swing.

Ezequiel told her to cook his dinner tonight, so she did. She's done

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 21 – Gone North

MatoThe front door of Cody’s mother’s house opens, and it isn’t Cody who comes out.I’ve been sitting out here for half an hour with the window rolled up. With the engine off, I could hear most of what’s being said in that kitchen if I let myself, and I’m not doing it. The last time somebody heard something that wasn’t meant for them, it cost me three years with him.I’ve spent it trying to work out how to tell him why I stepped back in my driveway, without it sounding like I’m pushing him away again. I haven’t gotten anywhere. Every version I come up with sounds like a man letting somebody down easy, and that’s the last thing I want to do to him.The woman coming down the steps is in a puffy blue coat, and she walked out of that house while Cody’s still in it, so she has to be the podcaster. She doesn’t go to the little car parked in front of me. She walks straight across the snow to my window and knocks on it.There’s no polite way to ignore somebody standing two feet from your doo

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 20 – Porch Light

CodySloane Tremblay got to my mom. Right this minute she’s sitting in Mom’s kitchen. The message is over and I’m still standing here with the phone jammed against my ear, half hoping Mom will call back and say she’s kidding.Mom knows exactly one version of the months I was missing, and it’s the one I made up for her. She’ll tell Sloane all of it, and she’ll be so proud of me the whole time. After that, Sloane’s going to take it home and pick it apart until she finds all the bits that don’t add up.Mato heard the whole message, same as I did. My mouth still tastes like him, and I’m furious with him. All of it’s going to have to wait until I’ve dealt with Mom.‘He kissed us,’ my wolf says, like it’s breaking news. ‘Forget the podcaster. Drag him inside and make him finish what he started, twice.’We’re not dragging anybody anywhere. That woman’s having tea with our mom, and it’s not something we get to ignore.“I have to go,” I tell Mato. “We’re not done, though. I’m going to go stop

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 19 – What I Heard

MatoFuck. I remember that night. He was taking the trash out when I said that, and he obviously heard me.Noah asked me why I was keeping my distance from Cody, and I gave him the honest answer, standing in the Alpha house kitchen. I know exactly how good wolf hearing is, and I should know better than to say anything that I wouldn’t say to someone’s face. That was the same night Cody came in from outside, thanked me for looking out for him and told me I could get back to my own life. I thought he was finally ready to manage without me. I was proud of him, for Goddess’ sake. All this time I thought he was done with us. I sent him one text, got “All good” back, and took that as my answer. I left him alone, since that’s what I thought he wanted. He walked away because of something I said. All that time missing him, with him a few miles down the road, thinking I didn’t want him. That’s why he’s so angry about me thinking of him as a kid. I may not have used those exact words, but it came

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 18 – Nine Years

CodySomebody took my boots off last night, and it definitely wasn’t Rafe. He’d have had my pants off too and left a note on my chest telling me I was welcome. They’re lined up by the front door. The last thing I remember is sitting down on Mato’s couch for one second to take them off myself. Now it’s morning, I’m still in my coat, and my boots made it over there without me.There’s nobody else in this house, so it was Mato. He got them off without waking me up, like I’m a toddler who passed out in his car seat after a birthday party and had to be carried inside. I can’t decide whether that’s humiliating or sweet, and I’m pretty sure it’s both.I also stink of Rafe. It’s soaked into my coat, and I’d bet money he’s still on my mouth.Which means Mato smelled it the whole way home. I sat right up against him in the cab with my face not very far from his nose, so there’s no way he missed it. He didn’t say a single word about it, not in the truck and not when we got back here.Neither did

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 17 – Snowbank

Mato“So, funny story,” Rafe says. “I put my car in a snowbank.”The number on my screen isn’t one I know. It’s after eleven, and in my experience, nobody who calls me at this hour is ever about to make me laugh.Cody was in that car.“Cody’s fine,” Rafe says, before I can get the question out. “He’s laughing at me.”Behind him, a little way off from the phone, Cody’s laughing so hard he’s wheezing.I have to sit down on the arm of the couch, and it takes a second before my hand’s steady enough to keep hold of the phone.“Where are you?”“County road, about halfway between town and your gate. There’s a corner out here that’s a lot tighter than it looks.”“How did you get this number?”“Cody wouldn’t call you, so I got it off his phone.” He sounds thrilled with himself. “Figured you’d want to come and get him yourself.”That’s twice tonight he’s let me know he can see right through me, and it hasn’t gotten any more fun.Cody didn’t want to be the one to call me. He’s on a date, and the

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 16 – Dinner

CodyThe rig comes up the drive, and there’s a second engine right behind it. It’s low and smooth, and it’s definitely not a truck. Two doors slam, and two sets of footsteps crunch across the yard toward the house.Holy shit. Mato brought somebody home. That’s what the offer to crash at Finn’s was really about. It wasn’t him being nice, it was a heads-up, and I’m supposed to return the favor. The man hasn’t had a date over since I moved in, and the same day he mentions it, he shows up with one.Where am I even supposed to go? Shania, I guess. I’ll sit out there with the heater running and pretend I can’t hear what’s happening in his bed.I’d probably have to leave the Reserve to get out of earshot. Even then, I’m not sure there’s anywhere far enough away to escape the squeaking of his bed.‘Go and bite whoever that is,’ my wolf says. ‘Somewhere soft and sensitive.’We’re not biting Mato’s date. Biting people is how they end up at Kelly’s table every week for the rest of their lives.T

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 2 – Heel

DaxThe wolf wants to turn around. He's wanted to turn around since I cleared the fence, and he isn't being quiet about it, because quiet isn't a thing he owns.He just keeps shoving the same word into the back of my skull like a toddler with a doorbell.Ours.Ours, ours, ours."He's a hunter," I t

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 1 – Sight Picture

NoahThree weeks I've been hunting this wolf, and tonight, finally, he does me the courtesy of holding still long enough to kill.Big of him. He's at the tree line where Northgate's fence gives up and the real woods start, and he's shirtless.Obviously. He almost always is.Cold's got nothing to sa

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 6 – Tells

DaxThe thing's in pieces at our feet and my body's still waiting for round two.I never come down off a kill clean. My blood's still up, ears still straining, every muscle still voting to hit something else.I don’t think it’s a werewolf thing. It’s an adrenaline thing. So when the wolf decides to

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 5 – Carrion

NoahThe wolf hits it like a truck, and the thing barely rocks.Wrong.Two hundred pounds of Alpha at a dead run should fold anything with a spine. This rotten thing takes the hit, slides back a boot-length in the dirt, and swings an arm the size of my leg.The wolf has to wrench sideways midair to
