Chapter 16

The time was well past her closing time, or any other time she would've stayed if she had the intention of staying any longer, but Kate was determined to wait as long as possible. Nick had refused to pick up any of her calls, he'd purposely avoided driving past their usual route that morning, and he'd taken extra pains to evade her despite the numerous times they would've bumped into each other during the day.

Glancing at him past the cubicle wall, she could see him shutting down his system. Packing her things, Katherine stood up and made for his table just as he started for the elevator door, creating an inevitable collision of their paths.

Nicholas Smith halted in his steps on reaching her, and Kate looked up to meet his stare, his eyes so impenetrable she wondered what thoughts lay hidden beneath those dark pools.

    In no time they had all their swim gear on and were ready to dive. Katie had seen how beautiful the waters of Conrad Island from above. Now she got to see them from beneath. It was a wonderful warm day. The water shone a lovely turquoise-jade green color. “You ready?” Nick asked, and she nodded. She'd been hesitant to go snorkeling in the beginning, so why was she so excited now?“Let's stay close to each other just in case, okay?” He added, and then he put on his snorkel. Katherine dove in first, and then a second splash from above told her Nick was in too. They'd been submerged for less than an hour, and it was already a daydream. From colorful tropical fish, to seahorses, sea turtles and beautiful coral, there was much to see in the waters of Conrad Island.     Katie's nightmare started like this. She was bolting full force across a deserted little road, in the midst of a violent storm. It was the middle of the night.
