LUCIAN

"I'll put them in water."

The voice cut through the air right after I took a step back, ready to walk off and aura farm somewhere else where no one could get on my nerves.

He talked back?

He actually talked back at me!?

The words hit me wrong. My whole body went still for half a second before my foot came back down and I turned on him. I didn’t even realize I had taken that step back until I was already doing it, just to see his face again.

And there it was. That same ocean calmness. That infuriating stillness, like nothing I said could ever touch him.

My fingers flew up into my hair and I dragged them through it, hard. Agony crawled up my spine. I wanted to grab the front of his shirt and shake him until his teeth rattled, until that calm cracked and something real came out.

"What the fuck did you just say?" I asked, and I tried to keep my voice even. I really did. But the way his lips twitched up into that short, little grin ruined it. It was everything that triggered me.

He didn’t answer. Instead, he kept holding the flowers like they were something sacred, like they mattered more than me standing here furious. And the sight of it twisted something in my chest because there were already too many things wrong with this whole day.

"Can I show you to your quarters, sir?" he asked instead, shifting his body out of the way and lifting a hand to gesture down the hall.

I sucked my teeth in disgust. The sound was loud in the quiet. I bit down on my lip until it hurt, still staring at this fucking slave boy like I could burn him with my eyes.

My hand twitched toward my pocket. I could feel the cold weight of the dagger there. One move and I could have it out. One move and I could press it to his throat and watch him gag and choke until the light left his eyes. The thought was so clear it scared me.

But I couldn’t. Definitely not now, it's not nice to cause trouble on my first day of arrival.

So I dragged in a deep breath instead, but still, It did nothing to calm me. I knocked his hand away when he tried to guide me and I stormed forward into the house, anger rolling off me in waves.

Jordan had been quiet the whole time. He followed behind me now, silent as a shadow.

"Where the fuck is my dad?" I asked, and I wasn’t even aiming it at anyone in particular. I was just demanding an answer from the air.

I turned in a slow circle, trying to place myself. This was supposed to be the old seating room. The one I grew up in. But it wasn’t, anymore..The layout was different. The furniture was different. Everything had changed and I didn’t even remember half of it, and that made me feel like a stranger in my own home.

I stood there in the middle of a large lounge, lost, when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye.

It's him, still walking. Slow and deliberate. Still holding those damn flowers.

"Follow me, please," he said, and he didn’t even look back to see if I would.

And I did. God help me, I followed. Even though every step made my jaw clench harder. Even though it was getting more irritating by the second.

He made a few turns, then more turns. The halls stretched longer than I remembered. I started wondering why my father wasn’t out here to greet me. Why wasn’t he in the front to welcome me home after so many years away.

Maybe he had gotten himself a concubine. Maybe that’s why everything felt different.

We passed through heavy curtains, the fabric brushing cold against my arms. He stopped abruptly on the other side and I stopped too, a beat too late.

"Master is in here," he said. "So you'll wait here wh—"

I didn’t let him finish, before I shoved past him, using my shoulder to knock him out of the way, and went straight for the door.

No way was a slave going to tell me to wait to see my own father.

"Get the fuck out of my way!" I growled, my hand already closing around the door handle, about to twist it.

And then I felt it. Very cold, and firm. His hand came down over mine and stopped me.

My blood boiled instantly. I jerked my head up to look at him, seething.

"What the fuck is this supposed to mean?" I spat.

"Unfortunately, you can't just barge into this room," he said. His voice didn’t shake. Not even a little. "You can only come in with an invitation."

An invitation?

To see my own father?

In my own house?

Something snapped, inside of me, that just lost it. My hand shot out for his face, fast, aiming to wipe that calm right off him. But he was faster. His hand snapped up and caught my wrist before I could land the hit.

For the first time, that ocean calm broke.

His face flushed red. I could see it, the color rising up his neck. And his eyes, his eyes went dark. The red showed in them, bright and furious, like something inside him was ready to come undone.

"Don't make me lose it, Lucian."

  • LOVE AND DEATH    CHAPTER SIX: TEMPTATION

LUCIANThe smirk left my lips just before I could stop it, because really? I thought it was beginning to get interesting in a way that made the air in the room feel heavier than before.“Change?” I asked, adjusting my hip against the sofa and leaning forward a little so I could see him better. “Can you elaborate on what you actually meant by change, if you don’t mind?” I pressed harder, searching his eyes for any flicker of hesitation or amusement that might give me an opening. He chuckled and set the glass down on the table with a soft clink. “Be precise too. What exactly did you want to know?” He folded his arms across his chest and settled back, watching me the way he always did when he already knew the answer but wanted me to dig for it myself. “Stop beating around the bush, boy. You can ask me everything you want to know.”I adjusted again, shifting my weight and letting my fingers curl against the arm of the sofa. “What is Ceal’s job in this building? He tried to stop me from en

  • LOVE AND DEATH    CHAPTER FIVE; Vodka and Unspoken Truths

"I heard noises," Adrian said. The sound of his voice cut through the red haze clouding my vision. Ceal's grip vanished from my wrist. One moment those cold fingers were pressing into my skin hard enough to bruise, and the next they were gone, his hand returning to his side with a fluidity that made the entire exchange feel like something I'd hallucinated. He stepped back, his expression settling into that ocean calmness I was already learning to hate.My pulse hammered in my throat. The heat in my chest was still there, coiled and ready, but my father's presence had thrown a bucket of ice water over the flames. I straightened my shirt, tugged at the cuffs, ran a hand through my hair. "Dad," I said. The word came out flat and casual. Like I'd bumped into a college seatmate at a coffee shop rather than the man who'd sired me, ignored me for a decade, and then failed to show up at the airport for my homecoming. My hands were still trembling, but I shoved them into my pockets. Let the f

  • LOVE AND DEATH    CHAPTER THREE: THE SLAVE'S WELCOME

LUCIAN Shamelessly, no one came.I stood at the arrivals gate for eleven minutes, hands in my pockets, the chrysanthemums dangling from my left hand. “Sir,” Jordan said, he wasn't with any luggage anymore, as he had packed them in the car. “The car is waiting.”“I noticed.”“Should I call the penthouse? Ask if there’s been a delay?”I didn’t answer. My gaze was fixed on the automatic doors, watching them slide open and shut for a family of four, a businessman with a rolling carry-on. But no one in a Frost livery. Nothing.“No,” I said finally. “Don’t call. Let’s go.”The automatic doors opened onto the parking structure. The car was a black sedan with tinted windows. I knew it's from the frost family. My father’s taste, not mine. I would have chosen something louder, something that announced itself before it arrived, but the sedan had been arranged weeks ago and I hadn’t cared enough to change it.“Keys,” I said, holding out my hand.Jordan blinked. “Sir?”“I’ll drive.”“But you

  • LOVE AND DEATH    CHAPTER TWO: TAUNTING

LUCIANThe picture in in my mind hadn’t faded, one bit. Even in ten years, across two continents, through a dozen boarding schools and three university campuses where I’d left pieces of myself scattered, like loosed thread. I could still see the boy my father had brought home that night, the so called trophy from his bloody hunt, trembling by the corner of the house.I was eight years old then. Old enough to understand that something terrible had happened, but too young to grasp why my father had returned with someone else’s son. The memory was still too sharp. I remembered how the boy had stood there in the marble entryway, his clothes too big for his frame, while he just stare at the space his body shaking uncontrollably. He didn’t speak for three days. Not even a single word. The housekeeper thought he was mute until she heard him crying in the bathroom at two in the morning.I’d pressed my ear to my bedroom door that night and listened. But not out of sympathy. I was eight, an

CAEL“No, no—please don’t kill me.”The words came out wet, gargling through blood that had pooled where his front teeth used to be. I watched, while my face stayed still. Not because I was trying to be cold, but because nothing stirred anymore when a man begged for his life im this basement. The first year, maybe. The second year, I’d flinch. By the fifth, I’d learned that flinching was a tell, and tells got people killed in Adrian’s world. By now, my heart rate didn’t even change. He was a frail man, the one in the chair. Some accountant who’d skimmed from the wrong offshore account. His tie had been ripped off and stuffed into his own mouth earlier in the evening, then discarded when Adrian decided he wanted to hear him confess. His shirtfront was more red than white now. His fingers—those were the worst part, and I’d looked at them only once before my stomach had given a warning lurch. I didn’t look again.Adrian stood beside me, breathing through his nose slowly. Annoyance was
