“Miss Baker? Miss Baker!?”
The flashback ended as quickly as it came, her head was throbbing, she was not over the whole travel sickness, she had been suffering from it for a long time, ever since she left Cali. Her head flew back to the voice that called her name. It was Armstrong. Leila smoothed the lines on her dress and smiled, She nodded like nothing had happened. “Yes? Can we begin? Gavin sat at the edge of the conference table. As usual, his whole presence was intimidating but she was prepared for it. The whole room was silence, He broke the silence. “The Almighty Leila Baker, to what do we owe you the pleasure?” It took Leila all she had not to break into laughter, Gavin Hasters was trying to break her and she was not going to stand for it. He did it once and he would not get the chance to do it again, “You should not believe everything you read online, take it from someone that has been involved in one too many scandals” The moment she said it, she wished she could take it back when she saw a flicker of hurt on his face. He deserved all that was coming for him, she wanted to reach over to caress his cheek, to tell him she still loved him and she still cared for him despite everything. In the past, she would have kissed him and he would have given her that million dollar smile that seemed to make everything better even if the world was on the verge of collapsing. But she didn’t move. She couldn’t afford to. Those days were long gone. The man she loved no longer existed. And she wasn’t that girl anymore She sighed heavily, bringing herself to reality. This was not the past; it was better off this way. *************************************************** The meeting took a total of forty five minutes, longer than what she had intended to spend. Forty five long and draining minutes of her avoiding Gavin Hasters’ eyes. She was not over him yet and she was a fool to think that in the first place, the whole point of her coming to New York was to make him pay for everything she went through and to think that her stupid feelings were about to get in the way of all that. She had to call herself to order fast because a lot of things were at stake. This wasn’t just a business meeting. This was the first step in a plan she’d been building piece by piece for years. As the board members scurried out of the room one by one, murmuring polite goodbyes and nodding at her with mixed curiosity and respect, Leila played with a strand of her hair, rolling it over and over again with her fingers. “You didn’t answer my question,” Gavin said suddenly. She froze. It was remaining the two of them now. The door clicked softly behind the last person. Leila looked up slowly. “Which question?” He stood, hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on her like he could see through every layer she’d carefully built. “To what do we owe you the pleasure?” She tilted her head, trying to mask the tremble in her hands with a confident smile. “Business. Nothing more, nothing less.” Gavin stepped closer. “Come on, Leila. You don’t just disappear for five years and show up at the biggest deal of the quarter for business. What do you really want?” She stood, the chair squeaking lightly behind her. “Careful, Gavin. Are you accusing me of something?” He smirked, but his eyes darkened. “You’re playing with fire.” “I know,” she whispered, brushing past him. But as she reached the door, she paused. “And fire burns, remember?” Before he could answer, she was gone. In the hallway, Armstrong was waiting. “I know we have not been on good terms in the past but I just wanted to apologize for my shortcomings” Leila smiled, typical Armstrong, best in playing it safe and removing himself from any situation that he knows he won’t win. That’s one of the things she admired about him and she was a little bit happy that he seemed to think she had the upper hand, she was not a hundred percent sure of herself now that she was back on familiar grounds. The easier part was plotting. To execute was way harder. “It is fine honestly,” she said She’d spent the last five years building a new life. A life forged from loss, betrayal, and one brutal night she could never forget. They thought they buried her but all they did was plant something. Armstrong caught up with her again near the elevator. “Just curious… what’s really going on? Why now?” Leila glanced at him, her eyes clouded with something cold “I’m here to collect what’s mine.” The elevator doors slid open. She walked past him, heels clicking against the floor. Her mind was already moving ahead next steps, next strike. She didn’t come back to New York to play it safe. She came back to destroy. And taking the company was just the beginning Gavin Hasters didn’t know it yet, but the walls around him were already crumbling. And by the time he realized what was happening, it’d be too late. She was going to take it all. The company. The life he built. And eventually, she was going to rip the truth out of him and make him pay.I remembered sitting still as the strange woman at the door looked at me like I just broke her heart, i felt sad for her even though I had no idea why. For a second, I wanted to call her back, to ask her who she was and why she looked at me that way. I smiled as Adele brushed the hair away from my face, bringing me away from my thoughts. She had been caring for me since I woke up and she told me we were in love and there was nothing suspicious about it, she was totally the kind of woman I would go for, hot and sexy and gorgeous and she reminded me she was carrying my child. At first, I laughed, thinking she was joking. Me? A father? But then she showed me pictures of us together, intimate, close. My arm around her waist. My lips pressed against her cheek. There was evidence so what was there not to believe. “Do you need anything else?” Adele asked me, she was smiling as she twirled her ponytail around with her fingers. There was something about her that i could not quite put my han
“Oh, I see you’ve met Leila Baker, your former secretary” Adele said with a cheesy smile as she walked to where Gavin was and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “That’s who she is? Sorry I did not remember you” Gavin said with an apologetic wave. Leila felt her heart shattered into different little pieces, she had a lot to say, Infact she wanted to scream but she had a very hard time opening her mouth not to mention getting the words out of her mouth, everything was spinning from where she stood. She felt a gentle tap on her shoulder, “Uhm, I think we should leave. We could come back another time. There’s still time” Frank said, trying to lighten the mood. “Yeah I think you should leave”, Adele backed it up, arms around Gavin. Leila could not remember how she left that room and the hospital but she knew that when she got back to the house, the house that was a gift from him, she felt like she had lost something that was part of her. *************************************
“What’s wrong with you? You’re all red” Frank asked, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.“Well, let’s just say my baby’s grandmother stormed in here few minutes ago with that devil of his ex-fiancée” Leila said with a sniff. He looked at her with pity, “You know? If you weren’t already put in the family way, I would have advised you to leave honestly” “Could have said something few months ago” Leila said with a smile, “Anyways, do not worry about me, you don’t have a weak friend”“If you say so” He laughed while kissing her cheeks, “Em is outside but visiting hours are official over, it’s late already. But I promise we would be here very early tomorrow, okay?”“No problem Frankie-Pooh”He raised his brow, “Frankie-Pooh?” Leila burst out laughing, “Get used to it. That’s going to be my baby’s nickname for you” “Cheesy. Anyways buh-bye, see you tomorrow Leily” He said while taking long strides outside the room. The silence was deafening, she tried closing her eyes but all she could see
“Gavin! Gavin!” She kept screaming until the villain ran away. She was too scared to do anything, his cheeks felt cold and she shuddered at the thought of him dead. Her hands were shaking and they didn’t stop shaking even when she sat still at the back of the emergency vehicle, and her mascara had fallen over her face making her look like exactly what she was going through. “Take a deep breath ma’am” The man said with concern in his eyes. She nodded absentmindedly, she wanted to smile but she could not bring herself to. Everywhere was noisy, with everyone speaking medical terms that she could not understand. Her head was spinning and she kept muttering a tiny prayer for the sky daddy to protect the father of her unborn kid. She could not even bring herself to look at Gavin’s face. All of a sudden, everything felt blurry, The last thing she saw before she closed her eyes was the sweet man in the vehicle whispering to her that everything was going to be alright. *****************
Leila threw her head back in laughter, “See, you’ve got this all wrong. I am not scared of you and I sure as hell do not care what Gavin’s mother thinks of me. I am carrying his child same as you but I have one more advantage, know what it is?” Adele stared at her in shock before replying to her, “Might as well say it since you have grown some balls” “Love. He loves me and not you. Let that sink in and why you are thinking about that, kindly leave my space, thank you” She said with a smirk. She did not know she had it in her to speak that way, maybe it was the pregnancy, she didn’t mind when Adele stepped all over her before but now she had something to fight for, someone to fight for, and that someone was growing in her belly. Adele was definitely riled up, she stood up and stuck her finger in the air, “Mark my words Leila Baker, you will regret this” **************************************************** Jordan stared at the vase in front of him as he smiled in a sinister way, hi
“We really need to stop meeting this way?”. Leila said, her face devoid of emotion. She had learnt how to hide whatever she was feeling and she was very good at it already. “Tell me! Why are you really here?” Adele shot back “Are you scared? The mighty Adele Cooper is scared?” Leila laughed “I stand to correct you, it’s no longer Adele Cooper, it is Adele Hasters. In case you have forgotten” Leila merely smiled as she walked away, “You both deserve each other” Immediately she stepped into the company, series of greetings followed after from Good morning boss to Good morning miss Leila. It made her ears sting, she was still not used to people greeting her like she mattered. She was their boss but they could tone down on the greetings. The director of the company interrupted her thoughts, “Welcome Miss Baker” She smiled when she saw him, his name was David Pouller and they had become friends in the two years since she became the head of Yungmin Enterprises, he respected he
