A sound at the door jolted up Leila. She had taken today as her off She had taken the day off, not because she wanted to, but because she had to. Gavin Hasters. She had let him in and now she was paying for it. The worst part? She should have known better. All because of one mistake, ONE MISTAKE that could have been avoided if she had used her head instead of her emotions.
The knock came again, sharper this time. Not much people knew where she stayed, her only surviving parent, her mom stayed in California and she was an only child. That left only frank as the only person who could be knocking but it was noon; she knew he would be at work. She was not sure Gavin knew where she stayed but he could. Her life was not exactly a secret now. Was it him? Had he come here to finish whatever he started last night? She swung her legs over the side of the bed, her robe slipping off her shoulder as she made her way toward the door, She hesitated, then exhaled sharply before unlocking it and pulling it open. It was not Gavin, standing in front of her was a very feminine, non- Gavin, blond, beautiful woman with green eyes staring right back at her. “Sorry, can I help you?” Leila asked, rubbing her eye The blond woman raised a brow, “You do not know me? That’s strange, considering the fact that you just slept with the man I love” Leila’s eyes bulged. She was fucked. Adele Cooper was in her home. “Uhm, I think you have gotten it all wrong. I slept with your man? Care to elaborate?” Adele merely smiled, It wasn’t a friendly smile. It was the kind of smile that let you know the person in front of you was three steps ahead and simply enjoying watching you, “Can I come in?” Everything in Leila was telling her to say NO but she found herself ushering Adele in. Adele strode in like she owned the place, glancing around before settling into one of the chairs by the window. She crossed her legs gracefully, placing her designer purse on the table beside her. Leila did not sit down. She had to be in control of the situation and it would be hard if she and her enemy were sitting together. “So,” Adele began, tilting her head. “Gavin Hasters.” Leila’s heart pounded. “What do you want, Adele?” “Relax! I did not come here to cause a scene. I came here to talk to you. Woman to woman.” Leila folded her arms. “Then talk.” Adele reached into her purse and pulled out her phone. She typed in her passcode and gave it to Leila. The screen played a video. It was her with Gavin in the elevator, making out with him. The video was clear enough to show her face. She could not deny the fact that if the video ever got out, her life was practically over. The tides would turn and everyone would paint her as a slut, Gavin might not be scarred because of his reputation and his gender but she was poor. Every body would assume she was the villain and of Adele was showing her this video. It only meant one thing, ADELE HAD THE POWER TO MAKE HER LIFE MISERABLE. Leila’s grip tightened on the phone. “Where did you get this?” Adele played with her hair, “Did you really think you could steal what is mine and walk away Scot free? You definitely do not know me” “It was a mistake. It’s never happening again. I promise” Adele Cooper merely paused and blurted out, “ Your words are not enough, Infact, I do not believe anything that comes out of your mouth. Leila swallowed hard. “Okay. What do you want?” “It is very very very simple actually. “I want you to disappear,” Leila stood there, stunned. She could not just leave, her life was in New York. She practically had nowhere to go and leaving was too big a price to pay for one night, just one night where she made a Terrible mistake. And she could not be the only one to suffer for it. Gavin was also involved and it was crazy for her to be the only one to pay for the mistake. She was not going down like this! And she was definitely not going to allow Adele Cooper treat her like a sorry case. Leila ran her hands through her hair, “I think you should leave. Allowing you in my house was a mistake” Adele continued softly, “I was not expecting it to be this easy. You seem feisty by the way, no wonder Gavin slept with you. You are just like me. You are his type and just to be clear. You are not the first secretary he has slept with and you definitely will not be the last.” “What are you trying to say?!” Leila said. Adele sat still, still playing with her hair, “ All I’m trying to say is that you have a lot to lose from this. if you don’t back off, this little video? It’s going everywhere. I have means and I will use it. It will be everywhere. Business news, social media, nobody will want to employ you ever again! How do you think the world will see you after this? Think wisely Leila” “You’re playing a dangerous game, Adele.” Adele smirked. “So are you, sweetheart.” “Fine,” she said. “I’ll consider your warning.” Adele stood abruptly and made her way to the door, “I knew you were smart.” Just as she reached for the handle, she paused. “Oh,” she added, glancing back over her shoulder. “One more thing.” At this point. Leila was plain irritated already. “What is it?” “Stay out of my way. Gavin must not know anything about this Or else….” With that, she walked out, the door clicking shut behind her. Leila stood frozen. Her hands curled into fists. Adele Cooper had just declared war.I remembered sitting still as the strange woman at the door looked at me like I just broke her heart, i felt sad for her even though I had no idea why. For a second, I wanted to call her back, to ask her who she was and why she looked at me that way. I smiled as Adele brushed the hair away from my face, bringing me away from my thoughts. She had been caring for me since I woke up and she told me we were in love and there was nothing suspicious about it, she was totally the kind of woman I would go for, hot and sexy and gorgeous and she reminded me she was carrying my child. At first, I laughed, thinking she was joking. Me? A father? But then she showed me pictures of us together, intimate, close. My arm around her waist. My lips pressed against her cheek. There was evidence so what was there not to believe. “Do you need anything else?” Adele asked me, she was smiling as she twirled her ponytail around with her fingers. There was something about her that i could not quite put my han
“Oh, I see you’ve met Leila Baker, your former secretary” Adele said with a cheesy smile as she walked to where Gavin was and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “That’s who she is? Sorry I did not remember you” Gavin said with an apologetic wave. Leila felt her heart shattered into different little pieces, she had a lot to say, Infact she wanted to scream but she had a very hard time opening her mouth not to mention getting the words out of her mouth, everything was spinning from where she stood. She felt a gentle tap on her shoulder, “Uhm, I think we should leave. We could come back another time. There’s still time” Frank said, trying to lighten the mood. “Yeah I think you should leave”, Adele backed it up, arms around Gavin. Leila could not remember how she left that room and the hospital but she knew that when she got back to the house, the house that was a gift from him, she felt like she had lost something that was part of her. *************************************
“What’s wrong with you? You’re all red” Frank asked, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.“Well, let’s just say my baby’s grandmother stormed in here few minutes ago with that devil of his ex-fiancée” Leila said with a sniff. He looked at her with pity, “You know? If you weren’t already put in the family way, I would have advised you to leave honestly” “Could have said something few months ago” Leila said with a smile, “Anyways, do not worry about me, you don’t have a weak friend”“If you say so” He laughed while kissing her cheeks, “Em is outside but visiting hours are official over, it’s late already. But I promise we would be here very early tomorrow, okay?”“No problem Frankie-Pooh”He raised his brow, “Frankie-Pooh?” Leila burst out laughing, “Get used to it. That’s going to be my baby’s nickname for you” “Cheesy. Anyways buh-bye, see you tomorrow Leily” He said while taking long strides outside the room. The silence was deafening, she tried closing her eyes but all she could see
“Gavin! Gavin!” She kept screaming until the villain ran away. She was too scared to do anything, his cheeks felt cold and she shuddered at the thought of him dead. Her hands were shaking and they didn’t stop shaking even when she sat still at the back of the emergency vehicle, and her mascara had fallen over her face making her look like exactly what she was going through. “Take a deep breath ma’am” The man said with concern in his eyes. She nodded absentmindedly, she wanted to smile but she could not bring herself to. Everywhere was noisy, with everyone speaking medical terms that she could not understand. Her head was spinning and she kept muttering a tiny prayer for the sky daddy to protect the father of her unborn kid. She could not even bring herself to look at Gavin’s face. All of a sudden, everything felt blurry, The last thing she saw before she closed her eyes was the sweet man in the vehicle whispering to her that everything was going to be alright. *****************
Leila threw her head back in laughter, “See, you’ve got this all wrong. I am not scared of you and I sure as hell do not care what Gavin’s mother thinks of me. I am carrying his child same as you but I have one more advantage, know what it is?” Adele stared at her in shock before replying to her, “Might as well say it since you have grown some balls” “Love. He loves me and not you. Let that sink in and why you are thinking about that, kindly leave my space, thank you” She said with a smirk. She did not know she had it in her to speak that way, maybe it was the pregnancy, she didn’t mind when Adele stepped all over her before but now she had something to fight for, someone to fight for, and that someone was growing in her belly. Adele was definitely riled up, she stood up and stuck her finger in the air, “Mark my words Leila Baker, you will regret this” **************************************************** Jordan stared at the vase in front of him as he smiled in a sinister way, hi
“We really need to stop meeting this way?”. Leila said, her face devoid of emotion. She had learnt how to hide whatever she was feeling and she was very good at it already. “Tell me! Why are you really here?” Adele shot back “Are you scared? The mighty Adele Cooper is scared?” Leila laughed “I stand to correct you, it’s no longer Adele Cooper, it is Adele Hasters. In case you have forgotten” Leila merely smiled as she walked away, “You both deserve each other” Immediately she stepped into the company, series of greetings followed after from Good morning boss to Good morning miss Leila. It made her ears sting, she was still not used to people greeting her like she mattered. She was their boss but they could tone down on the greetings. The director of the company interrupted her thoughts, “Welcome Miss Baker” She smiled when she saw him, his name was David Pouller and they had become friends in the two years since she became the head of Yungmin Enterprises, he respected he
