Leila Baker hadn’t set foot in New York in three years. She had left with the certainty of never returning, yet here she was, sitting stiffly at the back of her car, She stared out the window, the city had changed since she had last been there. The car came to an abrupt stop in front of Julius & Myres consulting company.A company that once belonged to someone she used to know. Someone who had once mattered. Someone she had vowed to forget. The place looked so different from what she remembered. It was her revenge that fueled her to return and she was going to do all it take. She was lost in thought until a voice interrupted.
“Miss Leila, should I drop you off here”. Her driver politely asked. “Yes, thank you. Take the car to the parking lot and meet me here in forty five minutes, I won’t be long” Leila stepped out of the car and stepped into the building, her stiletto heels clicking against the pavement as she smoothed down the crisp lines of her tailored black dress. As she went through the reception down to the elevator, nobody noticed her. That was her super power, one she had managed to gain over the years, the power of invisibility. She made her way to the elevator, pressed the button for the top floor, and waited. She stepped out and opened the mahogany door that led to the Conference room. Executives sat in neatly arranged chairs, the far end of the room, a chair awaited her, one labeled with her name. Without a word, Leila made her way to it, removing her gloves but keeping her sunglasses on. “Sorry for keeping you all waiting! We can start now” She said. A man to her left cleared his throat before speaking “Alright Miss Baker, We organized this meeting to discuss with you about the sudden takeover of this company. We know you’re capable but right now, the company needs to focus on other things and definitely not rebranding. I’m not sure if you understand what I mean ma’am” She recognized the man that spoke as Armstrong. Leila had to bite her lips to keep her from giggling. Armstrong was her former boss and it was sweet now that the tables had turned. He genuinely looked scared of her. But they had every reason to be scared, it was not a secret that she has been taking over companies and even the business news mentioned her name often. LEILA BAKER TAKES ANOTHER COMPANY, BUSINESS MOGUL: LEILA BAKER HAS STRUCK AGAIN. The headlines were different everytime, the recently published one was; LEILA BAKER IS BACK IN NEW YORK AGAIN: ANOTHER TAKEOVER?. She cleared her throat. She scanned the room with her eyes, Gavin was nowhere to be found. Gavin, Gavin Hasters. The only man that managed to make her weak and vulnerable. That was her past and nothing was going to stop her from making his life miserable, starting with his company. That was all that mattered to him anyways “Ma’am?” Armstrong gently called. That was enough to bring her back to reality. Leila removed her sunglasses and set it on the conference table. “I did not come here today to negotiate. I came here to finalize and I noticed the president of the company is not present at this meeting. I’m not a wicked person. I’ll be coming frequently and doing check-in. I’m not here to ruin things. I’m a major shareholder in this company and I have the power to make decisions. I’m not a rash person so we can reschedule a meeting. One with the president present” A deep voice spoke up from the distance. “No need, I’m here. Let’s start” Leila’s breath hitched as she looked at him. He was still perfect, That’s when she realized the bitter truth. She was nowhere close to forgetting Gavin Hasters.Leila found herself smiling amidst the whole thing. Gavin had dragged her out of the HR office into his office, holding her hand every step of the way and never letting go. A part of her was still confused as to the declaration of love that Gavin had done earlier. If he was becoming a father, why would he want to string her along. She wanted to ask him but deep down, she was a little bit scared of the response that she might get. She was a weak person when it came to him and she was not entirely proud of that but the way he professed his love for her made her swoon and feel all mushy inside out. She decided to hold on with the questions till another day, she did not want to ruin the mood just yet. “Are you hungry baby? Think we should skip the day and get breakfast and probably lunch and maybe dinner?” Gavin teased Leila chuckled, “Does that mean we will be gone for the whole day?” Gavin only nodded in response, he kept smiling at her like she was all he could see and she felt
Leila sighed heavily, she had no idea HR would be involved in this. She licked her lips, the weather was cold and she was not in the mood to start applying lip balm on her lips. She was not sure if Gavin was coming in to work today and honestly, she did not care, all she wanted was to forget him. She was not going to be the reason a family would be scattered, courtesy of Adele and the baby. She cleared her throat as she made her way to the Human Relations Office, immediately she entered, she met serious faces and she knew it was not a good news. “Good morning, I was informed to come and see HR” Leila said smoothly.“Have a seat Miss Baker” A bald headed man replied. She sat down, She was not familiar with his name and she was too tired to start asking so she just keep mute as the man continued what he was saying. “I’ll get straight to it. We’ve received a report concerning a personal relationship between you and Mr. Hasters. Specifically, that the relationship may have become intima
Leila burst into laughter. She was not sure she heard her mother right but the words she heard sounded like her mom telling her to move back to Cali. “Mom, I am not a child and you can not meddle in my life” Her mother looked at her with sad eyes, “I gave birth to you and I do have a say in what goes on in your life Leily. You are not happy here and I did not believe it before but your friend, Adele brought me here to confirm it. I think you should move back home” Leila rolled her eyes, her head was throbbing lightly, this was not even the right time for this conversation, she was tired, her day had been a total mixture of sadness and anger and frustration and her mom decided to spring this whole thing on her, she cleared her throat quietly, “I am happy here, my life is here, I work here. I can not just up and leave when things do not go my way and lastly! Adele is not my friend!” Mrs Baker gave her a resigned look before resuming what she was saying, “Well if you decide to not fo
Leila was not sure how much time had passed as she sat on the floor. The world was spinning and she was still, she felt like a ghost, like sitting on the sidewalk between sanity and mental disorder. Her life was spiraling downwards and there was nothing she could do about it. The day managed to make her feel optimistic, sad, angry, bitter and heartbroken and the day had still not ended. She could not remember the point Gavin left but it was starting to feel like hours. She remembered shouting at him to leave her alone. Everything else felt like a blur. “Leily?” Her mother called out. Crap! she had forgotten her mother was still in New York, she had to make her leave so she could at least break down in peace. It was not ideal to bottle up everything she was feeling. Maybe she should have taken that job offer from Adele before it got to this, she was pretty sure the offer was no longer on the table considering everything that had happened since then and not to crown it all with Adele’s
It took Leila all she had not to tear up. The apartment was the best gift she had ever received, her feelings were probably just everywhere but she was looking for different ways to thank Gavin for making her smile. The interior decor was plain white with a splash of grey, minimalistic and light just as she liked it, she was surprised he could guess her taste so well. The living room was large and compared to where she was living before? This living room was like three times the space of the other one. She actually smiled genuinely, not forced or anything. She was really happy. She looked up at him with teary eyes, “This is too much Gavin, too much”Gavin Hasters smiled, “Nothing is too much for you Leily-bear, I mean, I do not mean to be too forward or anything and I know we are just starting to know each other on a personal level but you have made me happy in the little time that i have known you than I have been with any other person. You are perfect baby and I would like to expres
Wait, he was kissing her in public, she tried pushing him off but he only stopped kissing her why he was ready and whispered in her ears, “If they want a show then that is what we are going to give them baby. I have nothing to lose”Leila ran her fingers through his head before kissing him back with everything in her. She kissed him passionately like he was everything and the click of a camera made her pull away from him. Her lips were kiss swollen and she looked flush. Damn! That was good. She smiled at him and he took her hands into his. She braced herself to look at the surroundings and she saw that they had managed to pull in a crowd. She was a little bit shy for having that public display of affection outside but she could not care less as it was. She had gone through so much today and that one kiss made her feel powerful, like a boss. Leila Baker knew she had a hold on Gavin but him breaking up with Adele? She thought it was extreme but she kept her thoughts to herself, she was
Leila stood there, her head was throbbing, her day was looking like a curse at this point. She forced herself to not breakdown, the tears were threatening to come but she smiled through it, clearing her throat lightly before replying, “I am very sorry sir and respectfully, i do not think I would place myself in a position to lie on television. Mr. Hasters and I were at fault and I do not believe I should be the only one to take the fall for both of us” Mormont laughed sarcastically, “The meeting is over Miss Baker, you can help yourself out. Thank you.” Leila smiled awkwardly. She picked up the files from the table and took slow strides out of the room. While outside, she took deep breaths to calm herself down. She needed to talk to someone soon, she was on the verge of breakdown. Her phone beeped and she checked her lock screen, it was from Gavin, ‘How did the meeting go baby? Handled it well? I have no idea why Armstrong is blowing up my phone. Is something wrong baby?’ Leila
Leila felt like time had stopped, her legs were beginning to hurt and her head was aching and she could feel her heart in her mouth and the list could go on and on. Everything was wrong today. She was already starting to regret why she came in to work today. She could have stayed an extra day and even if this happened, it would have given her an heads up and maybe she could have braced herself well enough and talked herself on how to cope with being the center of attention till the whole thing blew over. Leila Baker sighed, today was definitely going to be a long day and it was not even close to end of the work day for her. She was sure the meeting could not have lasted for more than ten minutes but it felt longer now that she thought about it. She felt like she was there and she was not also there. Like her body was there and her mind was somewhere else entirely. Someone clearing their throat brought her back to being present in the board room. “I asked if you were just his secr
Jones left after throwing her tantrums and playing the victim like she was the ‘fiancée’. Leila sat down on the office desk, she was beyond humiliated, she was mortified. This was a nightmare. And there was nobody she could call right now. The meeting was in less than 30 minutes and she was very sure the board members would have hear about the SECRETARY SLEEPING WITH HER BOSS. Leila was so close to having a panic attack. The thing is, she was wrong to underestimate Adele. She braced up herself to text Frank, she knew he had not seen or heard anything, that is why he has not come rushing to her office. She dropped a quick emergency text for him and in less that two minutes, he was beside her. His expression was gloomy, he probably heard and did not want to tell her till after she was done with the meeting but Jones had told her and now she was not sure if she could speak boldly at the executive meeting. Those people that made up the board were selfish, rich and obnoxious people that di
