Chapter 2:

Mira navigated the crowded hallway, her eyes scanning the sea of unfamiliar faces. She had been trying to adapt to her new school for weeks, but it still felt like an insurmountable challenge. The lockers seemed taller, the students seemed louder, and the teachers seemed stricter.

As she turned a corner, she collided with someone, spilling her books and papers all over the floor. "Oh no, I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, bending down to pick up the mess.

That's when she saw him – the guy from Crescent Avenue. The one she had seen laughing with friends outside the café. He was standing in front of her, his piercing blue eyes locked onto hers, and a hint of amusement playing on his lips.

Mira's heart skipped a beat as she felt a rush of embarrassment and excitement. She fumbled with her books, trying to gather them quickly, while her face burned with heat.

The guy raised an eyebrow, his gaze lingering on her frazzled state. "Well, well, well. Look what we have here," he said, his tone laced with sarcasm. "You're quite the clumsy one, aren't you?"

Mira's cheeks flushed deeper as she felt a sting from his words. She tried to brush it off, focusing on gathering her belongings.

The guy bent down to help her, his hand brushing against hers as they both reached for the same book. "Hey, are you okay?" he asked, his voice low but still tinged with amusement.

Mira's hands trembled slightly as she took the book from him. "Y-yes, I'm fine. Thanks," she stuttered, her eyes darting up to meet his.

He smiled, but it seemed more like a smirk to Mira. "No problem. I'm Max. And you are...?" He paused, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "You're the girl from the street, aren't you? The one who was staring at me like you'd never seen a guy before?"

Mira's face burned with embarrassment, and she felt like she was melting into the floor. "Yeah, that's me," she muttered, trying to play it cool.

Max chuckled, and Mira felt her heart skip another beat. "Nice to officially meet you, clumsy girl," he said, his tone still laced with amusement.

As they stood up, Mira felt like she was facing an intimidating challenge – her own emotions. She couldn't seem to look away from Max's piercing eyes, and her voice caught in her throat.

"Hi," she managed to whisper, her heart racing with excitement and nervousness.

Max nodded, his smirk still plastered on his face. "I'll see you around, clumsy girl," he said, turning to walk away.

Mira watched him go, feeling a mix of emotions. She wasn't sure if she was attracted to Max's charming smile or annoyed by his slightly rude demeanor. But one thing was certain – she couldn't stop thinking about him.

As Max walked away, Mira felt a mix of emotions. She was still trying to process the brief encounter, and her mind was racing with thoughts. Just then, a guy with brown hair and warm, hazel eyes approached her. "Hey, are you okay? I saw you get hit with books and papers," he said, his smile gentle.

Mira rolled her eyes and snapped, "Yeah, I'm fine. Mind your own business."

The guy's smile faltered slightly, but he tried to recover. "Okay, sorry. I'm Ethan, by the way. I've seen you around school, but we haven't met yet."

Mira didn't respond, instead choosing to ignore him and start gathering her books.

Ethan tried again, "Do you need help carrying your books or finding your next class?"

Mira looked up at him, her expression cold. "No, I don't need your help. Just leave me alone."

Ethan's face fell, but he didn't give up. He walked alongside her, trying to make small talk. "I'm heading to the cafeteria. Want to join me?"

Mira scoffed. "Why would I want to do that?"

Ethan chuckled. "Well, maybe because you're new here and could use some company?"

Mira raised an eyebrow. "I don't need company. Especially not from you."

Ethan's smile never wavered. "Okay, no problem. I'll just walk with you then. We can talk about something else."

Mira sighed, feeling frustrated. "Look, just leave me alone, okay?"

Ethan nodded, but instead of leaving, he fell into step beside her. "I'll walk with you to your next class. It's on the way to mine anyway."

Mira glared at him, but Ethan just smiled and kept talking, trying to make her feel better. "So, what's your favorite subject? I'm really into history."

Mira didn't respond, but Ethan didn't let that deter him. He kept talking, sharing stories about his own experiences in school, trying to find common ground with Mira.

As they walked, Mira couldn't help but notice Ethan's persistence. Most people would have given up by now, but not him. She found herself slightly intrigued, despite herself.

Ethan continued to chat with Mira, trying to break down her defenses. He pointed out landmarks and classrooms, making sure she felt comfortable and confident.

As they reached her next class, Ethan smiled. "Hey, I'm glad I ran into you. Maybe I'll see you around?"

Mira shrugged, still feeling a bit guarded. "Maybe."

Ethan grinned. "I'll take that as a yes. See you later, Mira."

Mira watched him walk away, feeling a mix of emotions. She wasn't sure what to make of Ethan's persistence, but she had to admit, it was kind of nice to have someone trying to be friendly.

***********

Mira sat in class, trying to focus on the teacher's lecture. But her mind kept wandering back to Max, the guy she had met earlier. She couldn't help but wonder what he was doing now, and if she would see him again.

Just as she was getting lost in her thoughts, Ethan plopped down beside her, a friendly smile on his face. "Hey, how's it going?" he whispered, trying to start a conversation.

Mira rolled her eyes, but Ethan didn't seem deterred. He leaned in, his voice low, and asked her about the homework assignment.

Just then, the classroom door opened, and Max walked in. Mira's eyes locked onto him, and she felt a jolt of surprise. What was he doing here?

Max's eyes scanned the room, and when they landed on Mira, a hint of a smile played on his lips. Mira felt her heart skip a beat as their eyes met, and she quickly looked away, trying to focus on the teacher.

But she couldn't concentrate on what was being said. Her mind was racing with thoughts of Max, and she found herself wondering what he was doing in her class.

Ethan noticed Mira's distraction and nudged her gently. "Hey, are you okay? You seem a little spaced out," he whispered.

Mira blinked, snapping back to reality. "Yeah, I'm fine," she whispered back, trying to focus on the lesson.

Ethan looked at her skeptically, but he didn't push the issue. Instead, he leaned in closer and started explaining the assignment, his voice low and soothing.

Mira listened intently, trying to push Max out of her mind. But she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched, and she found herself glancing over at Max, who was sitting a few rows away, his eyes fixed intently on her.

******************

As Mira walked in the door, her dad greeted her with a warm smile. "Hey, kiddo! How was your day?"

Mira shrugged, dropping her backpack on the floor. "It was fine."

Her dad raised an eyebrow. "Just fine? You seem a little off."

Mira sighed, flopping onto the couch beside him. "I don't know, Dad. I just had a weird day, I guess."

Her dad, chuckling. "Well, maybe we can talk about it over dinner. I picked up your favorite pizza."

Mira smiled slightly, feeling a bit better. "Thanks, Dad."

As they ate dinner, Mira's dad asked her more about her day, but she didn't feel like talking about it. She just shrugged and changed the subject.

After dinner, Mira headed upstairs to her room, feeling a bit more relaxed. As she changed into comfortable clothes, she glanced out the window, and her heart skipped a beat. The window of the house next door was open, and Max was standing there, looking directly at her.

Mira's first instinct was to ignore him, so she turned away and busied herself with her books. But she couldn't shake the feeling that Max was still watching her. She glanced out the window again, and sure enough, Max was still standing there, a hint of a smile on his face.

Mira rolled her eyes and turned away, trying to act like she didn't care. But she couldn't help sneaking another glance, and their eyes met again. Max's smile grew wider, and he waved slightly, but Mira just turned her back on him, feeling a mix of emotions.

CHAPTER 31MIRAMira sat cross-legged on the living room couch, her sketchbook open on her lap, pencil hovering over a half-finished drawing of her mom’s old garden. The house was quiet, the afternoon light filtering through the curtains, casting soft patterns on the hardwood floor. Dad was at work, and Miss Katy was out running errands, leaving Mira alone with her thoughts—a dangerous place to be these days. The latest anonymous message, “Family time won’t save you. I’m closer than you think,” had kept her up half the night, her mind spinning with images of the guy in the black hoodie—Jake—lurking outside her window. The pizza outing with Dad and Katy last night had been a brief escape, their laughter a warm shield, but the message had shattered that fragile sense of normalcy. She traced the outline of a rose in her sketch, her hand trembling slightly. The party last summer, Sofia’s sweet drink, the blur of The guys shadow—it all felt like a weight she couldn’t shake. She’d promised

Miss Katy sat beside him, her laughter mixing with the jukebox’s soft rock tune as she recounted a story about burning her first attempt at homemade pizza. For a moment, Mira felt like she could breathe, the weight of the anonymous messages and the guy in the black hoodie fading under the glow of the neon signs.“Let’s make a rule,” Dad said, raising his soda glass. “No heavy stuff tonight. Just us, pizza, and maybe a debate about whether pineapple belongs on a pie.”Katy laughed, nudging him playfully. “You’re not starting that argument again, Dennis. Mira, back me up—pineapple’s a crime, right?”Mira managed a smile, her first real one all day. “Team no pineapple,” she said, clinking her glass against theirs. The normalcy

She’d shown Ethan the code as soon as they’d left school, her resolve to uncover the truth overriding the fear that had kept her quiet. The guy in the black hoodie, was still out there, and Sofia’s apology felt more like a puzzle piece than a resolution.“Okay, let’s look at this again,” Ethan said, his voice steady as he pulled up the message on Mira’s phone, connected to his laptop. “These messages always feel like they’re hiding something—a pattern, a code. Like the sender’s trying to tell us more than the words say.”Mira nodded, leaning closer, her shoulder brushing his. “What kind of code? Like, a secret message in the letters?”“Maybe,” Ethan said, his fingers flying over the keyboard. “Or it could be in the metadata—timestamps, phone number patterns. I
