1 - Proposal

Today was supposed to be the turning point of my life. The day that'd counter all the tough days I ever had and crush them so badly that they would look like they never even existed. The happiest day of my life.

I had woken up to the news that my boyfriend, Finn Dalton, the newly appointed CEO of the SYR Group, had bought an engagement ring and was planning a surprise party for his love - me.

I had immediately gone to fix myself up. I did my nails, hair, and makeup as he loved it - clean and not overly flashy - and I wore a maroon tea length dress that defined my curves. I paired it with my black stilettos, a pearl necklace, and a black purse. And when I stared at the mirror, I was proud of she who stared right back at me - Rhea Dawson.

A tear escaped my eyes and I dabbed my cheek gently with a napkin and then a powder brush. It was a happy tear, reminding me of all the bumps and hurdles we had overcome in the previous years. I closed my eyes and let myself sink into my memories, reminiscing on everything we've been through in the past eight years.

We met on the first day of school in sophomore year. I had lived in this town all my life but he had transferred schools to live with his aunt after losing his parents in a terrible accident. I had fallen for him on that same day, all of him, but most especially his voice. He was perfect.

Deep blue eyes that seemed to pull me in with every stare. Silky brown hair that glittered under the sun and was ever so ready to dance with the wind. His nose sat perfectly on his face like a king who'd worked hard to earn his throne. And his full lips pressed against each other with strong determination.

He was sixteen then, a year older than the class, having missed a year from being in a coma. Our teacher had sent him to sit beside me, urging me to help him catch as I was the top student of my class. That was the day I stopped being best. I became second best and he took up the position I had prided myself in.

Well, I guessed it was because I liked him, but there was no stupid rivalry between us, rather teamwork. We did everything together and by Junior year, we had topped every other school in the district, and by senior year, we stood side by side as valedictorian and salutatorian. And on prom night, he asked me to be his girlfriend.

We applied to an ivy league university but his aunt died of a heart attack the day the admission letter came. On her funeral, we found out that she had a gambling problem and Finn had to inherit her debt.

We made it through somehow but tragedy hit me next. My family lost everything in a fire. We didn't have much before that but we lived a pretty comfortable life. My father suffered a stroke and died a few months after. My mother suffered from depression and had to be admitted to a mental hospital. It became up to me to provide and care for her and my baby sister. And no matter how much I hated it, I had to drop out.

I worked two jobs at first, making enough to cover every expense and save up a little. Then, I find out that Finn had plans to drop out as he could no longer afford the tuition fees. I talked him out of it, promising to assist him, and took up a third job. He too worked part-time and we were able to cover it until he graduated.

Then he got this fancy job as a CEO and that became the turning point of our lives. He has sworn to me that he would never fail me and he would give me a life better than whatever I dreamed of. This proposal would be the starting point.

"Rhea, you're going to be late and he'll be mad at you," I hear Rita's voice from beyond my closed door, pulling back into reality.

I picked up my purse, giving myself one final look in the mirror, and then walked out of the room. I stare at my eight-year-old baby sister - too sharp mouthed for her age - and another tear makes its way down my cheek.

"Don't be a crybaby," she blurted out, reaching for the towel I had hung on my door, "you'll mess up your makeup and look like a panda in every photo," she concluded, tossing the towel to me.

I opened my mouth to speak but she cut me off.

"Go, I'll be fine on my own. I'll lock all the doors and microwave dinner. If you're not back by ten, I'll stop waiting and go to sleep," she recited, seemingly excited about having the house to herself, "and if you're still not here in time for breakfast, I'll call Finn."

"Good girl," I gasped, my voice breaking, and pulled her in an embrace.

"Bring some cake back for me okay?" she muttered and I nodded, then I let go of her and made my way out, praying that she'll be safe when I return.

Finn's house was a thirty minute drive away from mine. As I pulled up into the driveway, I could hear music coming from the house. There were many expensive cars parked outside and I wondered when he had made all these rich friends.

He caught sight of me as I struggled to fit my car in the parking spot available to me and with an expressionless face, he made his way to me.

"You're not supposed to be here."

"Be careful, Princesa, what you wish for. You may not be able to pay the price for it." Nehemiah's words rang in my ears and I struggled to discern the meaning but in between the rhythmic snip-snip of Abuela’s gardening shears on the terrace and my own jumbled thoughts, it felt impossible. "You’re daydreaming again, Rhea," Abuela said without looking up from her prize-winning hydrangeas. "I was thinking about something," I replied, smoothing the silk of my dress. "Matteo sent a letter from Switzerland," she said, her voice dropping into that low, regal vibrato. "Diego is top of his class. He’s asking when his sister is coming to visit." A pang of genuine warmth hit my chest. Diego was the only pure thing left in my life. Even Rita has slowly drifted away from me. I couldn't blame her though, we were miles apart. Once I traveled back to the US, I'd search for and reunite with her. "Soon," I murmured. "Once the gala is over." "The gala," Abuela echoed, finally turning to

We both have a long day ahead of us." That was the last thing I heard Nehemiah say before he drifted off to sleep. Then, he began the loudest, most terrible snore I've ever heard in my life. So much for someone who hates to hear someone snore. The hum of the computer fan was the first thing I heard when I woke up. It was a low, consistent drone that anchored me to the reality of the previous night. For a few seconds, I stared at the underside of the top bunk's mattress, hoping the story about Gabriella, Matteo, and the faked death was just a fever dream brought on by too much cheap tequila. Then, the bed shifted below me. "If you’re staring at the ceiling hoping for an exit strategy, there isn't one," Nehemiah’s voice rasped. It was deeper in the morning, scratchy with sleep but still carrying that edge of unearned confidence. I rolled over and peered over the edge of the bunk. He was sitting up, rubbing the back of his neck. His dark hair was a mess, and he looked surprisin

I puked right on Nehemiah's chest. A frown etched itself onto his face. I squeezed my eyes shut, faking a blackout. He stayed silent, his breathing and steps remaining terrifyingly steady as he walked. I didn't dare move—I didn't even dare to exhale—fearing he’d unleash his anger the moment I showed a sign of life. Even as the bile began to dry, tacky and cold against my skin, I endured it. I felt a shift in his stride as he began climbing stairs. After a few minutes, he lowered me into the hard, cold basin of a bathtub. "I know you're conscious, Princesa," he whispered. His breath fanned against my neck, a reminder of exactly how close he was. "Wash yourself. Unless, of course, you want me to do it for you." My eyes shot open. My cheeks burned with a sudden, frantic heat. He smirked in satisfaction, tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear, and stood up. "I'll get you something to wear." The moment he disappeared, I scrambled out of the tub and bolted for the door, twisting th

  • LOVE AND RUIN: RHEA'S REVENGE   10 - La Casa De Garcia

I had won a jackpot in a lottery I didn't even sign up for. "Welcome to La Casa De Garcia," Diego whispered softly, pulling me out of my reverie. I put my phone away, my mouth agape in awe as the limo drove into the driveway of a magnificent private estate. As the gravel crunched under the tires of the sleek black SUV, I started to feel a sense of trepidation. Now that I was going to be in the presence of someone as powerful as the grand matriarch of the Garcia family, my heart couldn't stop racing for fear that I'd give myself out as an impostor. The vehicle rounded the final bend of the driveway, and the trees parted to reveal a mansion. I stepped out of the car, staring at it with awe, and in all its full glory, the mansion stared down at me. It wasn't just a house; it was a cathedral of limestone and glass, glowing amber in the twilight. Twin grand staircases swept up to a massive mahogany door, and rows of tall, arched windows reflected the manicured gardens like polished

"That young gentleman carries extreme guilt and deep longing. There's nothing that can't be worked out. The love you both have for each other is deep and true. Don't let it slip." The ride home was quiet. I had my eyes looking out the window as the taxi sped through traffic. This city in which I had spent most of my life in now seemed so big and strange, probably due to the fact that this would be my last time here for a while. And the fact that I had to leave my sister in the care of someone who had tried to kill me was eating me up. If only my mom was here. But she wasn't. She was stuck in an asylum where all she did each day was stare. She never spoke nor did she show that she could hear. They said her mind got broken after Dad's death and there was no way to fix it but I think maybe she just wasn't there anymore. I paid her fees yearly instead of monthly and even though she woul

"I'll miss you too, Pinocchio." Rita said, gently patting my back. I swallowed hard and my heart rate increased briefly. Pinocchio was a nickname she chose to call me because it rhymed with hers - Pistachio. Now that I had begun to lie to her, it seemed very fitting for me. We stayed in the hug for quite a while. It wasn't up to five minutes but it felt like forever, and it strengthened my resolve. And when we finally broke away, I ached for a do over. She, though, was more interested in telling me about everything that had happened. However, we didn't get a chance to chat cause Diego soon appeared with Finn. To distract him from us and alert me of his presence, he let out a loud screech, earning them stares from everyone and making Finn panic as he tried to find out what his problem was. I used the opportunity to kiss Rita goodbye, grab my cap and make my way to the escalator. Once I got down, I waited by the exit for Diego and a few minutes later, he rushed over to me excitedly

I was going to make Jennifer Rossi suffer. So much that she'd wish for death. I stalked Jennifer a bit more that night, falling asleep with my phone in hand and her face on it. The next day, we went for my checkup and I had 20/20 visio
