Chapter 7: Safe in His Arms

Everyone on their side begins discussing things among themselves while we remain quiet.

Killian isn’t included in their conversation.

He leans forward, his hands resting behind his head. The tension in his posture tells me this must be stressful for him.

Finally, Killian speaks quietly.

“He’s right…”

None of the men beside him hear him.

“What?” one of them asks.

Killian lowers his hands and looks up.

“I said he’s right,” he repeats.

His men look confused.

“I’m twenty years old. I’ve only been involved in this life for half of that. I’m not ready for this…” He pauses before glancing at me. “And I know Nara isn’t either.”

Silence falls over them.

I think the truth they had been avoiding has finally found them.

A strange sense of safety washes over me. I’m not sure if it’s because Liam is standing beside me or because Killian doesn’t want to hurt me.

Maybe it’s both.

“We understand this is a large offer,” Mr. Luca says calmly, “so we are willing to give you a few days to think it over.”

“Yeah… I think that would be best,” Killian says hoarsely.

“We will call to arrange another meeting then.”

Killian nods.

“Pleasure meeting all of you,” Mr. Luca says as he stands.

We follow him toward the door.

Before leaving, I glance back one last time at Killian.

He’s staring at me, watching me leave just like he watched our car drive away ten years ago.

We stop at a sandwich shop before heading home.

I can only stomach something simple, so I order a mozzarella sandwich.

Liam and I walk beside each other on our way back to the car.

The silence between us feels strangely warm, so I decide to break it.

“I didn’t know how soon you would take over.”

“Surprise,” he replies sarcastically.

“Does it scare you?”

He hesitates before answering.

“Sometimes I feel like I can’t live up to his name.”

He pauses.

“Then sometimes I feel like my name is even scarier.”

I smile.

“What’s your father’s name?”

“Nicholas,” he says in his perfect Italian accent.

“Nicholas Luca,” I repeat.

“Prolong the end of Nicho before saying the ‘o,’” he instructs.

“Nicho,” I try.

“Yeah… close enough,” he says with a grin.

During the silence that follows, my eyes drift to his lips. The scars only make them more attractive.

“I’m assuming Leon picked out those clothes,” Liam says.

“I told you they were slutty,” I reply, glancing down at myself.

“Did you buy the garter? Leon wouldn’t know to get that.”

“Yes, I did.”

“It was sexy as hell.”

My heart suddenly begins racing.

“Too bad I left it there,” I pout.

“We’ll get you hundreds of them, Nara.”

My cheeks warm instantly. I know he exaggerated the number, but I’m not sure he’s joking about buying another.

When we finally reach the SUV, Liam tosses his keys to Bruno.

“You drive.”

Bruno rolls his eyes but obeys.

Liam slides into the backseat beside me while Leon sits on my other side. I shift slightly closer to Liam.

We aren’t touching, but being only centimeters away from him is driving me insane.

I’m grateful that my skirt is loose enough for me to sit comfortably. I’ve always hated sitting “ladylike.”

Why can’t I just be comfortable?

A second wave of exhaustion crashes over me. Without thinking, I rest my head against Liam’s massive arm.

The moment I do it, I realize I probably shouldn’t have.

But it’s too late now.

I catch his reaction in the side mirror. He turns his head to look down at me, then slowly faces forward again with a small smile.

Maybe it’s the beer.

Maybe it’s exhaustion.

But it’s getting harder to stay awake.

My eyelids grow heavier and heavier until I can barely keep them open by the time we reach the garage.

I manage to step out of the car, but walking is another challenge entirely.

Liam notices immediately.

After watching me struggle for a moment, he scoffs and walks over.

Then he lifts me effortlessly one arm around my waist, the other under my legs.

He hasn’t touched me like this since the killing.

I hold onto his shoulders and rest my head against him. My hand brushes across his bare chest.

Even half-asleep, I notice the way his hand supports me beneath my skirt, resting under my thigh.

His thumb presses gently against my skin.

The city sounds distant as he carries me toward our building.

His shoulders are rock solid.

So is his chest.

My head rests against his left pec. It isn’t soft, but somehow it’s still comforting.

Being held against him is strangely soothing.

He carries me into the elevator without ever shifting my weight.

I may be small, but I’m well over one hundred twenty pounds.

They start speaking Italian around me, words I can’t even attempt to process right now.

“Guardati, Liam. Sei il suo piccolo maggiordomo,” Bruno teases.

Look at you, Valen. You’re her little butler.

Leon laughs.

“Chiudi il becco, Bruno,” Liam snaps.

Shut up, Bruno.

The elevator dings.

Liam carries me up the stairs toward my room.

“Thank you,” I whisper when we reach the quiet hallway.

He opens my door and carries me inside before gently setting me on the bed.

“Can you clean up on your own?” he asks.

I nod, but I’m already curled beneath my blanket, drifting toward sleep.

He sighs.

I feel my heels being slipped off my aching feet. Then he removes my earrings and places them carefully on the bedside table.

I hear him walk into my bathroom and open a drawer.

“Here,” he says.

I squint up at him.

He’s holding a makeup wipe.

I wipe the dirt and makeup from my face while he pulls a T-shirt and shorts from my closet.

When I finish, I drop the wipe on the table and lie back down.

Suddenly, he presses the cold wipe beneath my eye.

“Sorry. You missed a spot.”

He tosses the wipe into the bathroom trash.

“Change, Nara.”

I groan.

“I’m not doing that for you.”

He turns around to give me privacy.

I try to reach the zipper on the back of my top but fail miserably.

“Liam…”

He turns back and sees me struggling.

I think I hear him chuckle.

Without a word, he unzips it and turns around again.

I quickly change into the shirt and shorts.

The second I’m done, I collapse back into bed.

My blanket falls over me, and I curl into it.

I hear him standing beside the bed.

Then he leans closer.

“Buona notte, Nara,” he murmurs beside my ear.

Good night.

I fall asleep before I even hear him leave.

  • LOVE ME OR BURN   CHAPTER 32:BLOODY GAMES

Yesterday was spent preparing and training for this mission. I've learned about every way to pick a lock, I can avoid unconsciousness from different attacks, and I also know every function of peephole cameras and tiny microphones. The amount of gear I have right now could fill a tool belt if it wasn't all hidden. My purse has my disguised pocket knife, microphones and cameras hidden in tampon wrappers, and a gun in a secret compartment. If the purse is taken from me, I have extra gear in my bra.A lot of people will be observing the dinner. We payed off a waiter to let us in and set up cameras. There are also two guys in the restaurant watching. Nathaniel will be speaking to me through a small ear piece invisible to everyone. It is hidden behind some of the front cartilage attaching the ear.Everything up to my makeup is strategic. I did it much differently so Malcom doesn't recognize me. My silk, black turtleneck dress doesn't allow my bra to look suspicious. My heels even have a sm

  • LOVE ME OR BURN   CHAPTER 31:TWO DAYS BEFORE THE FALL

Two days.Mr. Luca is going to sell my fucking soul to Malcom. Worst part is, I will have no choice but to comply. Two days until I'm tied up, tortured, and abused. My body will be beaten, and probably bruised. Just two days, and I'm going to fucking lose it.Killian called me today with last minute dinner plans. He wanted to meet before I went away.He made reservations at a fancy place for eight o'clock. It is dark in here, but the minimal lighting is very blue. I dressed up in a lacy black dress. I'm a little early, so I went ahead and got the table. This is my first time being out alone since I have met everyone. I have always had someone with me, or at least an escort. I guess Liam is calm knowing that Killian will be here.Killian walks out in front of me. It's like I thought him into existence."Hey!" I smile. He gives me a quick hug before sitting down. He's in a white shirt and a black tie. He has the sleeves rolled past his wrists. He couldn't sit properly at a table if his

  • LOVE ME OR BURN   CHAPTER 30:BLOODY BARGAIN

We walked into the spacious home. The Christmas tree is almost two stories tall. Garland and lights are hung along the doorways and windows. This place is meant for HGTV.There are groups of people gathered around. Each are enjoying a glass of wine or champagne.I'm glad my dress fits in well. I'm always standing out, usually without trying."Nathaniel , you look well! I hope Liam hasn't been too hard on you." She says as she gives Nat a hug."You know he hasn't." Nat smiles. She turns to me now. My heart starts to pound.I give her my friendliest smile."I believe we haven't met...""Nonna, this is our friend Nara.""Is she not your date?"I start to get worried. Why is she being so critical of me?"I don't see why she can't be both." Liamanswers. She thinks about that for a second, "I guess you're right. And she's brought brownies with her?"I thought she would appreciate the brownies."I heard your not supposed to show up empty handed to a dinner party." I say, trying to appease

  • LOVE ME OR BURN   CHAPTER 29:A NIGHT THAT FELT REAL

I haven't been grocery shopping since I was living on my own. Liam and Nathaniel needed my best input to make a good batch of brownies for a dinner party. We were just getting ready to check out, but I feel like an item is missing."What's wrong?" Nathaniel asks."We are missing something..." I say.I look through the cart and compare it to the list. Then I finally notice what's wrong."Oh it's the walnuts! We forgot them."Liam rolls his eyes, "I'll go get them.""Thank you." I smile.Nathaniel and I pull the cart to the side and wait."It feels so weird being back in here." I say."Why is that?""I don't know. It all just feels so... normal.""I guess so. I kind of lost the lining between what's normal or not.""Yeah..."Liam is taking forever with these walnuts. We are just looking around the store now."Some girls are walking towards us." Nat says, looking behind me."What?" I ask.I spin around and feel my anxiety spike. I can't believe what I am seeing. My school friends are wa

She says holding out her arms."You sure you want to bruise that pretty skin of yours?" I ask.She takes a few steps closer to me and shoves me down. I latch onto the table right before hitting the floor. She walks closer to me to win a complacent grin."Get up and fight!" She exclaims, trying to make me seem powerless. It takes me a second to decide, but I know I have to teach this bitch a lesson. From the ground, I push her as hard as I can with my right foot. She stumbles back pretty far.Everyone is gasping and yelling. A lot of them are chanting "fight" loudly.I get back up as soon as I can. She throws a weak punch at me, and I direct her arm to the side. I back away for a little space. Then, I spin

  • LOVE ME OR BURN   CHAPTER 27:BUILT FROM DAMAGE

I was so tired after the pain last night that I slept until 1 p.m. When we got home I ran up to the shower and finally washed his lingering touch off of me. I was exhausted to the point that I fell asleep in my towel.I threw on a hoodie and sweats to go downstairs. Nathaniel is making a sandwich in the kitchen. I sit down on a stool at the island across from him."Look who's finally up." He says.I remain quiet. I'm not in a joking mood."You want one?"I look at what he's making the sandwich with. He's got turkey, lettuce, tomato, and surprisingly not American cheese."Yeah..." I say.He gives me the first sandwich he made, and turns to the fridge to get me a cup of water. I feel like shit, but this warms my heart. I haven't been cared for like this since my mom died. After giving me my water, he begins to make another sandwich. I start to eat the one he gave me."I'm going to the warehouse in an hour.
