Aria's POV

He knocked at eight.

I had not been expecting him. He had not called ahead the way he usually did. Just the knock at my door on a Tuesday evening with Vivienne out and the apartment quiet and the specific kind of stillness that existed in a space when you had been sitting in it alone thinking too much for too long.

I opened the door.

He was still in his work clothes. Jacket on. The day still on him in the specific way the day stayed on Daniel when something had been heavy in it. He l

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME    Vivienne Disappears

Aria's POVShe stopped answering on Saturday.I called at ten in the morning. The phone rang five times and went to voicemail. Vivienne's voice on the recording. Warm and familiar in the specific way that her voice had always been warm and familiar before I had learned to hear what lived underneath the warmth.I left no message.I called again at three in the afternoon.Voicemail.I called Sunday morning.Voicemail again.Three calls across two days and nothing. No callback. No text. No message sent through any channel. The specific complete silence of a person who had decided that silence was their current strategy and was executing it with the same focused efficiency she brought to everything else.I sat with it.I had expected more noise. That was the honest thing about it. After everything. After the article and Sloane and Kevin Marsh and the civil suit and the apartment visit and all of it. I had expected the next move to be louder than the silence. I had been braced for louder.

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME   The Mole

Daniel's POVThe IT manager came back at two.Same careful manner as before. Same closed door. Same single printed page placed on the desk between us with the expression of a man who had found something and was not glad about finding it.I had asked him to run a full audit on Thursday morning after Aria had told me about the message sent from inside the building. Device traces. Access logs. Entry and exit records cross referenced with the timestamp of the message. Everything available in the system checked against everything else available in the system. He had been thorough.I looked at the page."The message was sent from a device belonging to Kevin Marsh," he said. "Junior analyst. Three weeks on the floor."I looked at the name.Kevin Marsh.I placed him. Barely. The specific unremarkable quality of a person who had been designed to be unplaceable. Three weeks. Quiet. Professional. Sitting at the desk near the east window with the particular invisibility of someone who had cultiva

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME    Aria Finds Her Strength

Aria's POVI called her on Friday morning. Not because I was ready exactly. Because ready was not the right word for what this required. Ready implied comfort and this was not going to be comfortable. It implied preparation and there was no version of preparation that made this easier. What I had was something different from ready.Clarity.I had clarity about what needed to be said and who needed to say it and when. And the when was now. Before the civil suit her lawyer had apparently filed landed in Daniel's office. Before another week passed with Vivienne somewhere in this city making her next calculation. Before I lost the specific quiet furious determination I had found at the corner table on Thursday lunchtime and let it become something softer and less useful.I called her.She answered on the first ring.We met at the café near my apartment. Neutral ground. Not my kitchen where she had made tea and asked careful questions. Not anywhere that belonged to either of us. Just a tab

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME   The Final Move

Aria's POVI showed Becca the message at seven fifty in the morning. Not because I had planned to. Because Becca was already at her desk when I arrived and she looked up and saw my face and said what happened before I had put my bag down and I had learned a long time ago that lying to Becca was both impossible and pointless.I handed her my phone. She read the message. One sentence. No signature. The unknown number I had stared at until midnight and then stared at again at six in the morning when I woke up and checked my phone with the specific hope that it had been a dream and the specific disappointment of finding it still there.*Before you walk down that aisle you should know what your sister told him about your family.*Becca read it twice. Then she looked up at me."Who sent this?" she said."Unknown number," I said. "Prepaid most likely. Can you find out anything about it?"Becca had a brother who worked in telecommunications. This was something I had learned eight months ago a

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME   The Calm Before

Daniel's POVThree days of quiet. Not the silence that had edges. Not the cold silence of the past few weeks that had carried weight and temperature and the specific pressure of things unresolved pressing against the inside of it. Just quiet. The ordinary comfortable kind that existed between two people who had been through something and had come out the other side of it and were simply glad to be on the other side.Sloane was gone.Vivienne had gone silent. The article had been addressed by the communications team with a brief statement that said nothing specific and communicated everything necessary. The civil suit her lawyer had filed had been received by my legal team and was being handled through the appropriate channels without urgency because without Sloane feeding information from the inside and without the fraud case to leverage it had considerably less force than Vivienne had apparently believed it would.Three days of the floor doing its normal things.Of the Singapore corr

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME   THE CONFESSION THAT WASN'T

Daniel's POVI had been thinking about the phone call since yesterday. Not constantly. I was not a man who allowed one thing to occupy the entirety of his attention when there were other things requiring it. I had the Singapore final documentation. The Henderson amendment sign off. The quarterly pr

Daniel's POVI did not sleep on Sunday night. Not because of anxiety exactly. Not the restless unsettled sleeplessness of a man who does not know what he is going to do. The opposite of that. • LOVE ME OR HATE ME   HE SHOWS UP

Aria's POVI ran on Sunday mornings because Sunday mornings were the one part of the week that belonged entirely to me.Not to the 34th floor. Not to Daniel Cole's schedule or the Singapore team's time zone or the Henderson amendment or the quarterly presentation or any of the legitimate profession

  • LOVE ME OR HATE ME   SUNDAY MORNING

Daniel's POVI sat in my apartment for a long time after I got back. Not doing anything specific. Not reading. Not working.
