DAISY

He said he wants me to call him by his name, not his title.

"I mean, Damian," I correct myself quickly and he returns his attention to the road without a word.

But I notice a slight relaxation in his posture, like some invisible tension has finally been released.

"Are you okay?" I ask, frustration building inside me like a pressure cooker about to explode.

The words come out more forcefully than I intended but I can't help it.

His hot-and-cold behavior is driving me absolutely crazy.

"Why do you always ignore me? It's really painful. Is it because of Melissa?" I inquire.

"No," he replies curtly, his voice giving away nothing.

His single-word response tells me absolutely nothing.

Does he mean it's not about Melissa?

That he's not okay?

Or that he's not ignoring me?

The ambiguity is completely maddening. It's like trying to solve a complex puzzle with half the pieces missing and no picture to guide me.

"Well, what does that mean exactly?" I demand, my patience wearing dangerously

DAISYShe smiles gently before crossing the room to sit beside me on the bed.The mattress dips slightly under her weight and I catch a whiff of her perfume. It's something light and floral that's a welcome change from the hospital smells."Dear Daisy, don't worry," she places her hand on my back and rubs small and comforting circles between my shoulder blades."It's all over now. You're safe here." Her touch is warm and motherly.I try to wipe away my tears with the back of my hand, embarrassed by my weakness in front of her.I'm so tired of crying, so exhausted by grief but the tears keep coming anyway as if my body is determined to expel all the pain through my eyes."Her vital signs are all good," the nurse says after checking the IV attached to my hand and making a note on the tablet she carries. She's middle-aged with kind eyes and gentle hands."She experienced severe shock, which is completely understandable given the circumstances. She's dehydrated and has minor smoke inhalat

DAISYI must have dozed off because I'm startled awake by voices outside the car. They filter through the partially open window, urgent and concerned.I push myself up on trembling arms and peer through the glass to see Kevin carrying a limp figure in his arms. It's Grandma!"Her pulse is weak," I hear someone say. It's a female voice I don't recognize. She's likely one of Damian's pack members with medical training."She's lost her mate. The bond-break is killing her. We need to get her to a hospital immediately." She adds.Terror gives me a fresh surge of strength. I throw open the car door and stumble toward them, the blanket trailing behind me like a cape.I reach them and grab Grandma's hand, horrified by how cold and fragile it feels in mine. Her skin which is usually warm and slightly rough now feels like parchment stretched over bird bones. The wedding ring she's worn for over fifty years looks too big now, sliding loose on her finger."Grandma, no," I plead as tears blur my v

DAISYI lose track of time in Damian's arms. I'm aware only of his heartbeat steady on my cheek and the rhythm of his breathing. The strong cadence grounds me and gives me something to focus on besides the chaos and destruction surrounding us.I feel something soft being wrapped around my naked body. It's a large blanket that smells faintly of pine and cedar, like Damian himself. The fabric is thick and warm, immediately soothing on my skin that feels raw and hypersensitive from exposure and trauma. He carries me to the edge of the clearing and carefully leans me back on the trunk of a massive oak tree. The bark is rough through the blanket but there's comfort in its solidity. In the ancient strength of the tree that has witnessed countless seasons and will continue long after this night of horror is forgotten.Damian kneels before me. His powerful frame somehow made gentle as he cups my face in his hands. His thumbs move with delicate precision to wipe away the tears that continue to

DAISYIs this real?Did I die and this is some kind of hallucination my brain has created in its final moments?Or have I lost consciousness and this is just a dream my mind has conjured to escape the horror surrounding me?But no... I know that wolf.I would recognize him anywhere, even through the haze of smoke and tears. From the way he holds himself to the particular shade of his midnight fur and the intensity of his gaze that seems to pierce straight through to my soul.I know him.Damian.My mate has come for me.Hope blooms in my chest like a fragile flower pushing through scorched earth.I extend my trembling hand toward him in silent supplication. In him, I see my salvation and my escape from this nightmare. My lips part to call his name but all that emerges is a broken whimper. He doesn't come to me. Instead, Damian launches himself over my body in a powerful leap, avoiding me completely as he attacks the wolf who stands above me.His massive form sails through the air with

DAISYI burst into tears before throwing my arms around him.He holds me briefly. I can feel his heart beating rapidly, too fast and too irregular. He's dying, just as Grandma felt through their bond. The realization is a physical pain in my chest. He pulls away and leads me to a sheltered corner away from the fighting. It's behind the remains of what was once our community well. His movements are growing sluggish and his breathing is more labored with each step."Listen to me carefully, Daisy," he instructs, his voice weaker now."My end is here... but yours hasn't come. If it does... I'll sacrifice what's left of my life for you and your grandmother." Blood trickles from the corner of his mouth, and his skin has taken on an ashen hue.He winces in pain as his hand goes to the silver embedded in his chest."She's in pain now... I can feel her through our bond. Listen, you must return to her and find a solution, a treatment, anything to help her bear my death. When mates have been bon

DAISY"Planning? What do you mean? Who's been planning?" I kneel beside her as my voice rise with panic. "Grandma, please, I don't understand any of this. Why did Grandpa say this isn't our pack? Who are these people attacking us? Why do we have to go to the Claw pack?"She doesn't get to answer before she suddenly collapses fully to the ground and cries out in pain. Her hand clutches at her chest, her face contorted in agony. Her body convulses and her back arches off the ground as if she's being electrocuted."Grandma!" I kneel beside her, panic rising in my throat."What's wrong? Why are you in pain?" I grab her shoulders in an attempt to steady her trembling form."Your grandfather is dying," she gasps, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks."We're losing him. I can feel it through our bond. They've hurt him badly, Daisy. They're killing him." Her eyes are wide with a pain I can't even imagine. Her words hit me like a physical blow.Grandpa dying? No, it can't be true. He's al
