Everything I had expected the human city to be was quite insulting to the city now that I was looking at it.

There were cars moving everywhere, tall buildings that I had to look up to the sky to see the end of, if I was even lucky enough to see the end of it.

“This is…” I trailed off, not sure what to call it. I didn’t think there was ever a moment when I closed my mouth as it was open in awe the whole time. Deirdre had to pull me forward for me to even walk.

“Stop acting like you’ve never been to the city before. They’ll start to suspect,” she warned.

As soon as the warning registered in my head, I snapped my mouth shut and looked ahead. But it didn’t stop me from staring at the things I found new and interesting.

“How come we don’t have cars?” I muttered to myself, but Deirdre heard it and nodded in agreement to my reasoning.

“I asked Tyrell the same thing once,” she said. “And he explained that it’s already hard enough to hide a whole pack. Cars going in and out of the woods would

“Hey!” I yelled out as two of the men at the entrance grabbed each of my hand and started to pull me into the building. “What in the world do you think you’re doing?!”I turned to George and raised my brows with my eyes wide open to question him, but he only looked at me with the same disgust and contempt he had since he told them I was a werewolf. This whole time, he knew. He knew and he led me here intentionally.“I’ve always had my suspicion about your family, and I’ve always wanted to test out my theory. This is the time I get to do that,” he said, letting me know that he wasn’t even sure about it. It was just a hunch he had.“I’m not what you think I am. How dare you accuse me of something like this, George?” I asked him, shaking my head.“Your brother’s story just doesn’t sit right with me. And it would be the utmost disrespect to me if I get to find out that my daughter has been married to a werewolf all these years.” He shook his head as we got to a large room with even more m

“Are you ready?” George asked me the next morning as both of us got ready to set out on our walk so he could show me around the city.“I am,” I said with a nod as I prepared to strap Aaron around my chest safely when he placed a hand up in the air as if waving for me to stop what I was doing.I gave him an incredulous look, raising my brows. “You don’t want my child coming along? What if he gets hungry? And what if he starts to throw a fussy fit? I don’t think I would live with myself if I let Deirdre handle him all by herself.”“Well then you’re lucky that Deirdre isn’t the only one here,” he replied with a smile. “My wife would be happy to take care of your baby before we return. I’m doing this in everyone’s best interest as well. I’m sure you wouldn’t want him under the sun for too long as he’s too young. And don’t get me started on all the noise.”I stood there and considered it. Did I really want to trust humans with my child? I would have said no under normal circumstances, but

The table was silent after George’s accusation. Both of us had a silent stare down, and I didn’t know what to say. I knew I couldn’t confirm what I was. Not even if he was torturing it out of me. But the way he looked at me…as if he knew.“Dad!” Deirdre finally broke the silence with a nervous laughter. “Stop it. You do this all the time.”George’s face broke into a grin as he shook his head. “Don’t mind me, Zara. I do this all the time to people when I meet them for the first time. It’s a way to create some sort of ice so we can break it.”I smiled forcefully, hoping he wouldn’t see that it was forced out of me.“You know, that’s how I know that you and Angelo are siblings,” he said. “He had almost the same reaction that you did. Like a deer caught in headlights.”I laughed, shaking my head. “Don’t you think it’s rather absurd to go on and accuse people of being something that probably doesn’t exist?”“First of all, I think it makes a great first impression about me. It lets them kno

“I don’t remember seeing you at the wedding,” George, Deirdre’s father, told me as all four of us sat at the dining table that evening for dinner which Brenda, her mother, had insisted on making.“I was out of town,” I told him with a smile, rehearsed as usual. I didn’t know how many times I would have to say all the words I had rehearsed, but I was already starting to get tired of it.“Out of town,” he repeated, and it sounded almost like a scoff. It made me alert. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat because I knew it wasn’t the end of it. He wanted to say something else, and I was ready for it.“Being out of town and not dropping by for your brother’s wedding?” He asked. From the silence at the table, it was obvious that he was waiting for an explanation. I didn’t think I owed him one. Even Deirdre looked down at her food as if she had no words for me, throwing me under the rock.“Well, I was at work. Very important work,” I said, my smile starting to get tight and strained.“Oh, wor

“You want me to go with you to the human world?” I asked Deirdre with a look of doubt and worry on my face. Did she forget the fact that she had just told me what her father was? How did she expect me to trust her enough to go to the city with her?“Well, that way, you’ll know my intentions are pure.” She smiled. “And before you tell me anything about not doubting me, I can see it in your eyes. You haven’t looked at me with trust since I told you about my father. I don’t blame you. It’ll be a win for both of us because then, you’ll know what my father knows about these herbs, and I’ll have someone with me who I don’t think is suffocating to be around. Right, Tyrell?”I looked over to see that Tyrell had almost the same expression on his face that I did. Neither of us liked the idea.“If you’re worried that I won’t be able to protect her, you should know by now that you’d be wrong,” I said to him with a tight smile.I found it tempting. So tempting that I truly wanted to go to the city
