Flora grabbed my hand before I could take a step forward.

“What do you think you’re doing?” She asked. And even so, her voice still held no tone of malice against me. It was still as warm as it always was.

“I’m looking out for myself and my baby. I need to visit the rogues and find out the truth from them. They won’t know that I know—”

“You’re returning to them with a pregnancy that belongs to one of the sons of the people they killed. They’ll either keep you there with them and never let you leave or they will try to get into your head once again.”

“I don’t think they can do that.” I shook my head as I argued. “I mean, I already know what kind of people they are.”

“You have to listen to me, Zara. Whatever you’re planning to do, don’t do it. They’ll get what’s coming to them. Besides, what truth do you even want to get from them that you don’t already know?” She questioned.

“Flora.” I took her hands now, giving them a squeeze. “Don’t worry about me. I’m going to be fine. All you have

“Do you want to put your people in danger?” I asked Darius as he paced up and down in the bedroom with his head in his hands as he found it difficult to make the decision. “Look, Darius. I don’t want you to think this is easy for me as well. I just think it’s a logical decision for us if we think about it. We have about two and a half more days to think about it—”“Logical decision, Zara?” He asked with raised brows and crossed hands. “I’m listening. What’s the logic in this?”I sighed and took deep breaths as I thought about what to say again.“It’ll be way better for us to have them on our side. Not just figuratively but just one pack away. He told me about the condition of their cavern. It’s falling apart, apparently. They need a new place to stay. And this could be the best thing to happen to all of us. If we’re ever attacked, the vampires will make it here in no time.”“And what happens if we get attacked during the day?” He questioned. It was the one thing I was putting off for

“We’re not going to do that,” Darius said when I told him what the vampires wanted from us so they would work together with us when the time called for it.Smith had told me what they wanted in confidence. He had encouraged me to tell Darius about it in private so we could both come to a decision without influence from the outside, but Darius was now proving to be my biggest challenge.“Darius, they won’t be here with us. It’s the perfect plan. Your pack is big enough for us to migrate your brother’s pack members. That way, you can keep your eyes on them and be their alpha. I’m sure you’re the only person your brother would trust to lead his people.”“Listen to yourself, Zara,” he argued. “You want me to displace my brother’s pack members from the home they’ve known for such a long time to accommodate vampires? You want vampires to live just a border away from us? The same vampires who kidnapped you—”“You’re making this more complicated than it actually is, Darius,” I snapped at him,

“Smith,” I called out when I reached the clearing where a large number of vampires stood. Of course they had come out here at night. It had totally escaped my mind that they couldn’t stand in the sun for long. Then again, the witches had made it possible for that to happen once.“What happened to your immunity to the sun? Did it leave when the witches were weakened?” I asked, more out of curiosity than from a need to mock them.Smith stepped forward from the crowd of vampires with an unamused look on his face.“Don’t forget that you’re the one who summoned us out here. We have a right to leave when we want to. And I won’t hesitate to do just that when I sense that you’re trying to play crooked,” he threatened.“I’m not here to play games with you, Smith. I wouldn’t waste your time like that,” I said. “I’m sure you saw the details, so you know why you’re here.”He crossed his arms, not saying a word. He was silently letting me know that I still had to explain things to him again like h

“Are you alright, Luna?!” I heard a soldier ask me as I opened my eyes with a loud gasp and jumped out of bed as if I had just had the most horrible nightmare ever.“What… Why are you in here?” I asked, squinting at the light pouring into my eyes from the window. That was when I realized that it was morning already.“I heard Aaron crying, and you were screaming about something in your sleep. I’ve been trying to wake you up for minutes now.”At the mention of Aaron, my eyes snapped down to find him finding Aaron close to his chest. He had stopped crying, but he now had a hiccup. I took Aaron out of the soldier’s hands and gave him a thankful and apologetic smile.“I’m so sorry for the inconvenience,” I quickly said as I sat down with Aaron, cradling him to my chest. The only thing I remembered was my call to the moon goddess, but I just couldn’t shake off the feeling that there was something else. It felt like after that meeting with her, I didn’t come here directly. I was taken somewh

“And whose fault was that?” I asked, stepping toward the moon goddess with an irritated frown on my face. “I called on you. Night after night, I reached out to you so you could let me know what next to do.”“Zara, you don’t have to argue when you already knew what to do,” she said, making me stop in my tracks.“And what exactly was I supposed to do?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at her.“I told you. Render your help to all of them. Do not pick a side. I showed you what would happen to each and every creature of the moon if you chose one over the others—”“And isn’t that what I did?!” I yelled, interrupting her. “Didn’t I try my hardest? I offered to help every single one of them. I offered help to the vampires, and they refused it. I still chose to keep them on my side. The itches kidnapped my child, and they refused to give me an explanation for anything!”The moon goddess looked at me incredulously, as if she didn’t know what had been happening the whole time.“I told you once that I

“How are you doing in there?” I asked when I stepped in front of the cell where Darius was sitting down in the dungeon later in the night when I had put Aaron to bed.“Not very good, to be honest,” he said in response as he stood up and walked up to the cell with a weak smile on his face that I had spent enough time to know was fake.“You’re not happy about this arrangement, are you?” I didn’t even need him to give me an answer. He looked down at the ground as if finding what to say but being at a loss still.“I know exactly how this must feel,” I joked, trying my hardest to lift the mood. “After all, you’ve done quite a lot to me. I’m familiar with this.”He gave me a look that made me realize he didn’t find it funny, and I frowned as I reached for his face and cupped it softly and encouraged him, “Tell me what’s wrong, Darius. You don’t have to hide anything from me. Just tell me how you feel about this.”“This has always been the problem with us, Zara,” he said. “You’ve been lookin
