“Who are you?” Alpha Darius questioned, his eyes narrowed at me as he didn’t acknowledge the warrior who was still standing at the door in a panicked state.
All I could do was lay there with nothing to say but a lot to say at the same time. What was the Moon Goddess thinking, pairing me in a mate bond with the man who had killed my brother?
On one hand, I was livid. My brother’s murderer was right there, in front of me, and all I wanted to do was grab him by the neck and strangle him until the life would drain from his eyes. On the other hand, he was my mate, and that was the only thing I knew. The proximity between us was more than enough for me to go feral, but I knew I couldn’t.
“ Just let me go, and I’ll explain everything,” I said as calmly as I could manage, hoping that the distinct scent that made me known as a rogue would not give me away. He probably had not realized it because of the mate bond. He most likely had another scent of me embedded in his brain.
“I will only ask this one more time as I hate repeating myself—who are you?” he asked again, getting off of me this time. The angry look on his face was not missed on me. “I know every single member of my pack, and I have never seen you before.”
Before I could say anything, the warrior who had come to warn him started to sniff so loudly that it was enough to distract even Alpha Darius.
“What are you doing?” Alpha Darius demanded from him.
“Alpha Darius!” the soldier called out with alarm in his voice. “You have to get away from her. She’s a rogue! I don’t know how she’s managing to conceal her scent from you, but it’s all over the room.”
I shot him a glare, hoping that looks could kill this once. From the way Alpha Darius turned to look at me, I was suddenly snapped back to reality and reminded that this was the man who had attacked us and killed my brother.
I started to struggle in an attempt to get away from the room, but he held me in place. If anything, it only made me struggle even more. Now, it was fight or flight, and I was attempting to do both.
“Get away from me!” I ordered, my words doing nothing to stop him from slamming me into the wall behind me to make sure I didn’t go anywhere.
“She’s the one who killed all the guards in front of the house. I believe she’s the one who was sent here to kill you, Alpha,” the soldier said, approaching us with a small dagger aimed at me. “Admit it—your mission here is to kill him.”
I started to struggle again, the bag that was slung over my shoulder snapping and falling to the ground to gain attention.
“Stay right there!” Alpha Darius yelled at me in such a compelling tone as he slammed me against the wall once again, my feet were glued to the ground.
He stared at me, and I stared back at him. We each had the same look of surprise on our faces, me because I was wondering how he managed to keep me in place with just a command and him… I wasn’t exactly sure what he was surprised about. He had said those words with intention, which meant that he knew that he could do it.
“We have to talk about this,” I said in an attempt to distract him from the bag that had fallen to the floor. “We’re mates, remember? We have to talk about the mate bond and how this affects—”
“You’re mated to…” the warrior trailed off, his eyes widened in shock.
“There are warriors out there risking their lives for the sake of this pack. I believe you have informed me on what you’re to inform me about. Get out,” Alpha Darius snapped at the warrior.
The warrior glared at me, turning around to leave after a moment of reluctance. I didn’t feel relieved about being left alone in that room with my brother’s killer.
“We really don’t have to make this awkward. We can talk once this is all over—after the fight between the rogues and your pack.”
My breath hitched in my throat as he slowly bent over to grab the bag, unzipping it open, his brows raised as he pulled the knife out of the bag with what resembled a scowl on his face.
“Is he right? Were you sent here to kill me?” he asked, staring at the knife with a look that only made me want to sink into the wall behind me, never to be seen again. “Are you seriously a rogue?”
I looked between him and the door as I wondered just how fast I would have to be to get out of there. Unfortunately, he caught my eye movement extremely fast and warned, “The moment you take a step in an attempt to get out of this room, I will take nothing into account. I’ll simply kill you.”
There was no need to overanalyze his words to know that he was telling the truth.
There was now a lie at the tip of my tongue, but something was holding me back from telling that lie. I had no idea what it was, but it held my tongue like a cat. I opened my mouth, but all he got in response was a deep, shaky breath.
He pulled the knife out of its sheath, pressing the silver tip against my throat. The coldness of it caused me to gasp and shiver, my hand grasping his so tightly that I feared I would hurt him.
“I asked you a question,” he reminded. “Are you a rogue who was sent here to kill me? Make me repeat myself one more time and you’ll regret it.”
There was silence, but just enough for me to tell myself that it was of no use.
“Yes,” I admitted with a low voice.
“Yes, what?” he questioned. The knife was now pressing even harder against my skin. I could feel the sizzling heat of the silver against my skin. The wolfsbane was now having an effect on me as my eyes watered.
“I’m a rogue. You killed my brother, and you brought my best friend over to your pack. We never did anything to you. It’s completely unfair for you to attack us when all we have done is exist on our own! Being outcasts doesn’t put us in the position to get hunted.”
I let out a sigh of relief when the knife was taken away from my skin.
Once again, I glanced at the door. All I had to do was—
I let out a loud gasp as a sharp pain tore through my chest, as if a million claws were trying to take my heart out. As I looked down to see what had just happened, my knees buckled and caused me to fall to the floor.
“You…” I wheezed from lack of breath as I raised my head to look at the man the Moon Goddess had cursed me with as a mate.
He had stabbed me with the knife.
A loud gasp escaped from my lips as I took in deep breaths of air. My lungs felt as if I had been doused in hot water and was breathing in it the whole time my eyes were closed.I’d just woken up from a nightmare where I was the mate of an alphawhom I was supposed to kill after he did the same to my brother, and my mate stabbed me with my own knife. But as I looked around at the strangely familiar room I sat in, I stared to wonder if it had been a nightmare after all.“You’re awake.” I jumped when I heard his prickling voice say to me when he walked in through the door.It was not a nightmare. From the feelings stirring up in my chest, I realized that I was truly mated to this man who had stabbed me.I pushed myself against the headboard in my attempt to stay away from him as I asked, “What did you do? That knife… It’s a lethal knife, especially to werewolves. What did you do to keep me alive?”“That’s something I should be asking you. Do you seriously think I wanted you to survive th
“You’re sentencing me to death?” I asked, not sure if he even heard me as I had lost my voice.“You’re a rogue. If I had let you stay for any longer without doing anything, I would be dead by now because you were sent to kill me. You don’t walk into a pack and try to kill the alpha of the pack without facing the consequences.”“That was before I knew you were my mate. You killed my brother. You took my best friend away. You deserve to die more than I do because your attack on us was unprovoked.” I knew my words were not helping me. If anything, he would only get angrier. With a scoff, Darius shook his head. “You don’t understand anything, do you? For every single rogue that’s roaming out there, there’s one more person in danger. Your kind killed my parents.”I stayed silent. I was not going to exchange more words with him. It wouldn’t go anywhere.“When do you plan to execute me?” I asked after a moment of silence. He looked at me with slightly raised brows as if he was shocked at my
As soon as Alpha Darius was out of the door, I was on my feet to determine what my next steps would be.“Okay,” I whispered to myself as I looked through the window. The path right below was almost deserted. Whoever walked by was not paying any mind to the house with everyone on their way to the festival. If there was anything I remembered about festivals, they started right after the alpha addressed the pack. There would be loud cheers to signal that they had started.“Patience, Zara,” I told myself in a whisper as I walked toward the door and placed an ear over it.If I focused hard enough, I would hear the heartbeats of everyone standing out there.One.Two.There was no third one. There were just two guards out there. For a moment, I thought it was a trap. Perhaps Darius had caught on to the fact that I wanted to escape, and he was baiting me to make me think I could do it.But even though I didn’t know him much, I knew that he wouldn’t do something like that. Especially on a spec
“You’re hurting me,” I said to the man.As if considering it for a moment, his eyes narrowed and he soon asked. “If I let you go, are you going to run again?”“No. Just get off,” I said, and he finally let go of my hands as he rolled over and stood, offering me his hand to help me get up.Stubbornly, I picked myself up from the floor without his help. “This was a big mistake. I’m not your mate. Maybe the Moon Goddess is having some sort of…bad night. I mean, it’s the night of a festival. She has to be tired.”He folded his arms as he examined me. “I don’t think there’s ever been a mistake of that kind ever recorded. Are you a member of this pack? You don’t have the same scent they do.”From his words, I quickly understood that this man was not a member of the pack. Perhaps he was there to celebrate with the hosting pack.“You don’t have to know any of that. I’ll just be on my way,” I told him, turning around in my attempt to escape. This was going to put a whole dent on my plan to esc
“I found her first. She’s my mate,” Darius said, surprising me. I could tell it was the unspoken competition he had with his brother getting to him.“You were just about to have her killed in front of your pack members for entertainment,” Aeron said to his brother. “Don’t tell me all of a sudden, you don’t want her out of your sight. Are you that threatened by me?”Darius didn’t say anything in response. He only tightened the grip he had on my hand.“Since she’s not very important to you, I suggest you hand her over to me. I’ll take her off your hands, and no blood has to be spilled,” Aeron added.“I haven’t rejected her,” Darius argued. “And if I was the first person she was connected to, it only means I’m her rightful mate. Reject her.”“I don’t belong to either of you,” I finally managed to speak up. “It would be better if you both reject me. I’ll be on my way, and this won’t have to be anything bigger than it already is.”“Are you serious right now?” Darius scoffed. “You really ex
“You can carry on with the festival,” Darius said to his pack members, more in a tone that told them that if they didn’t, there would be consequences.“How do you think you’re going to keep me locked up in your pack until he returns and possibly wages war against you?” I asked him with my arms crossed after everyone turned around and pretended like they weren’t worried.“It seems my guards weren’t as competent as I gave them credit for. You will be under my watch for the next few days. I want to see what my brother intends to do. You make an attempt to escape one more time, I won’t care what my brother threatens me with and you’ll find yourself in a less than honorable grave.”From the way he was looking at me, I could tell that he wasn’t bluffing. It didn’t take away the curiosity that I held on to.“Why didn’t you just give me up? You could have made me his problem instead of having me stay here. You don’t need me,” I said.“You have no right to know what I’m thinking. You’re coming
“What are you talking about?” I shook my head as I stopped pacing in the middle of Darius’s room. My eyes were narrowed and focused on him. He wasn’t serious. He couldn’t be.“Aeron is a horrible person. You might not see it because he’s putting up a front, but you’ll find out soon enough. Just in case you didn’t know, I won’t be granting him permission to come into my pack again. The next time you see him, he’ll probably be dead from trying to wage war against me.”“No. That’s not… What is this all about? Just because you and your brother have some sort of difference between you that you can’t settle doesn’t mean I have to be in the middle of it,” I protested.“And when my brother is dead,” he continued as if I had said nothing, “you’ll have no other option than to complete the mate bond with me as there’s no other person. I have no intention of forging you.”“This is ridiculous. I’m not going to do anything with you. Not even if Aeron dies,” I said, wanting to mean every word but I
“Help! I’m being attacked!” I yelled as soon as I had the opening to use my voice, causing one of the attackers to hold my mouth closed so hard that I feared my jaw was going to break.I kicked and scratched and punched, trying to find my way out of this situation as the second attacker grabbed my legs and hoisted me off the ground. They both started to head to the border in a hurry.I groaned against the arm that was clamped against my mouth as hot tears rolled down my cheeks.“Can you stop making all that fuss? If you do anything stupid, I’ll make sure to kill you and tell Alpha Aeron that we couldn’t get you. Would that be better?” The one holding my legs threatened. For a moment, I stopped struggling. I could almost feel bruises forming from where he held my legs tightly. One moment, I was trapped in the middle of them both with them carrying me out of the pack and left with nothing to do but to think about my own despair. The next moment, I was falling to the ground with a loud t
I was in heat. If there was one thing I knew about being in heat, it was that the last person you wanted to be with if you didn’t want to mate with anyone was your mate. And Aeron was standing right there, holding on to me and trying to keep me steady.“You have to take deep breaths. I’ll run some cold bath water for you,” he said as he led me up the stairs and into the room.I didn’t need him to tell me to take off my clothes before I took them off. I noticed him hesitate a bit when he saw me in nothing but my undergarments, and it took everything in me not to act on his reaction.“Aeron, please… I don’t think I can do this,” I told him, bringing him back to his senses as he rushed into the bathroom.I didn’t know what I was begging him for. I didn’t know what I told him I couldn’t do. Maybe I couldn’t hold out for much longer. But I wasn’t even in the right state of mind.“The water is cold and ready. Come in!” I heard him call out. I hurried into the bathroom and sat in the tub. Th
After the first dinner I had with Aeron where he revealed his true feelings, I didn’t see the need to ask him anything about the rogues or his brother anymore.Darius still didn’t come. It had been three days since I was brought to the pack. Three days since the rumors began to circulate that the alpha had a new mate.“Are you Zara, the new luna?” One of the pack members asked me one afternoon as I sat under a tree to take my time and think about what I wanted to do with myself.“I wouldn’t say I’m the new luna exactly, but I am mated to the alpha,” I confirmed as she sat beside me. This was very much unlike the last encounter I had with the lady back in Darius’s pack.“I’m Penny,” she introduced. “I’ve heard so much about you, but I was a bit scared to come and see if the rumors were true. I thought you wouldn’t like anyone bothering you. You haven’t been out much.”“Well, I’m trying to get used to the place.” I shrugged. “Just so much going on, and it’s all happening so fast.”I did
I had asked Aeron about three times what he meant when he said Darius wouldn’t be coming for me at all. He didn’t give me an answer. I was shown to my personal bedroom, which was just as big as the one back in Darius’s house.“I have nothing to wear,” I said to him, finding something to set my eyes on so I wouldn’t look at him. I settled on the white curtains that swayed with the night breeze.“I knew that. I made plans before I left. There are clothes tailored to you in the closet. You don’t have to worry. Take a shower, join me for dinner if you’d like,” he said.I heard his footsteps retreat and the door close before I got the courage to leave. The first place I went was the closet, opening the doors and finding rows and rows of clothing. They all looked so…perfect. Not too big for me, but not too tight as well.I found a pair of white shorts and a matching shirt that I could sleep in, setting them down on the bed.“What’s in it for him?” I asked, wondering what Aeron could possibl
“Thank you,” I said to the guards as they all got back up and faced forward. Aeron took my hand and led me into the pack.“Do they bow to every single guest they have at the border?” I asked Aeron, my eyes narrowed. “Maybe you orchestrated that so I would think you’re going to treat me right.”Aeron replied with a chuckle. “You really put yourself on such a high pedestal. Do you seriously see me telling my guards to bow to you and go on one knee when you finally arrive? Perhaps we had a number of rehearsals as well.”I felt heat creeping up my cheeks at the mockery. What was I thinking accusing him of doing something like that? Of course he wouldn’t.“They heard from their alpha that you’re my mate, so they’re giving you the same respect they would give me. That’s all there is to it,” he said.I nodded, refusing to look at him as shame enveloped me. “I’m sorry. I was just… I don’t exactly trust you. You walked into your brother’s pack and took me away without his permission, so you’re
“What are you doing here?” I asked, the horror obvious in the tone of my voice as I took steps back and almost knocked myself down my tripping on the edge of the bed.His hands were in his pocket as he gave me a cool look, almost like I didn’t need any reason to react that way toward him.“You sent your people here to attack me,” I reminded him, just in case his memory had not refreshed up to that moment to speed things up. “How did you even get in here? Darius said he was never going to give you permission.”“You and Darius must have gotten along very well. I’m jealous.” He placed a hand over his chest and faked a hurt look. “And I didn’t send my people to attack you. I told them to bring you home.”“You told them they could be forceful if I didn’t want to come with them,” I said with a frown.“I told them to be forceful if anything stopped them from bringing you. I was referring to the useless guards at the borders.” He finally stepped into the room, and I could feel my heart going
On the first day, I didn’t think it was a big deal. After all, there had been a sighting of him.“Has he come back?” I asked the same guard as I saw him the next day. “If you know where he is, you can just tell me about it. Even if he’s out of the pack and somewhere else—”“I already told you, he went out yesterday.” This time, the guard sounded agitated. It felt like I was being a bother now. I shrank into myself in shame at how desperate I seemed.“This wouldn’t be the first time he’s gone out and hasn’t returned in days. He might even be out for up to a week,” the guard added. “I highly suggest you wait patiently.”I took his words to heart, but it didn’t exactly give me the best assurance. On the third day, I started to feel extremely uneasy. I knew the guard had told me this was normal, but it didn’t mean I could just sit and accept it. Something was wrong. I couldn’t place a finger on it.Ignoring the words of the mysterious woman I had met under the tree to stay indoors, I walk
I was torn between disappointment and relief when I woke up to an empty bed the next morning. I was disappointed because I didn’t think he would walk away from this so easily and so fast. Then again, that was all the proof I needed to know that I shouldn’t take things too far with him.“Good morning,” Ella, the woman who always came in with my food, greeted as she joined me that morning with a tray of food as usual.“Have you seen Alpha Darius this morning?” I asked.“Not really,” she answered with a shake of her head. “Maybe he’s out hunting. I’m sure he’s close.”I nodded as she set the tray down on the bedside table and walked away, never indulging in whatever curiosities she might have.I sighed as I forced myself to dig through my food. I wanted to convince myself that I didn’t care. I tried not to think about him or why he hadn’t even thought to check up on me, but I failed. When the sun was high up in the sky at noon, I walked out of the room and headed over to his office. I kn
“Zara,” Darius called, looking more surprised than I had expected him to be about something like this. “I don’t think you understand what you’re talking about.”I chuckled without mirth. “I do know what I’m talking about, Darius. You know this is going to work. Your brother will figure out that I chose you over him, and he’ll take a step back. Maybe not for a long time, but enough for us to figure out why this is happening in the first place.”“You just got attacked. You’re not in a right place right now. You just want to take it all out on Aeron, and I understand your frustration. It’s just—”“I’m not you, Darius. I’m not here making decisions just because I’m scorned and I hope it’ll upset your brother. I want this to be over. I’m in the middle of everything, just in case you didn’t realize.”He sighed in defeat and nodded.“But just in case you still want to think about it before going any further, we can talk about it tomorrow. How’s that?”“Fine.” I shrugged, knowing that tomorro
