“Who are you?” Alpha Darius questioned, his eyes narrowed at me as he didn’t acknowledge the warrior who was still standing at the door in a panicked state.

All I could do was lay there with nothing to say but a lot to say at the same time. What was the Moon Goddess thinking, pairing me in a mate bond with the man who had killed my brother?

On one hand, I was livid. My brother’s murderer was right there, in front of me, and all I wanted to do was grab him by the neck and strangle him until the life would drain from his eyes. On the other hand, he was my mate, and that was the only thing I knew. The proximity between us was more than enough for me to go feral, but I knew I couldn’t.

“ Just let me go, and I’ll explain everything,” I said as calmly as I could manage, hoping that the distinct scent that made me known as a rogue would not give me away. He probably had not realized it because of the mate bond. He most likely had another scent of me embedded in his brain.

I will only ask this one more time as I hate repeating myself—who are you?” he asked again, getting off of me this time. The angry look on his face was not missed on me. “I know every single member of my pack, and I have never seen you before.”

Before I could say anything, the warrior who had come to warn him started to sniff so loudly that it was enough to distract even Alpha Darius.

“What are you doing?” Alpha Darius demanded from him.

“Alpha Darius!” the soldier called out with alarm in his voice. “You have to get away from her. She’s a rogue! I don’t know how she’s managing to conceal her scent from you, but it’s all over the room.”

I shot him a glare, hoping that looks could kill this once. From the way Alpha Darius turned to look at me, I was suddenly snapped back to reality and reminded that this was the man who had attacked us and killed my brother.

I started to struggle in an attempt to get away from the room, but he held me in place. If anything, it only made me struggle even more. Now, it was fight or flight, and I was attempting to do both.

“Get away from me!” I ordered, my words doing nothing to stop him from slamming me into the wall behind me to make sure I didn’t go anywhere.

“She’s the one who killed all the guards in front of the house. I believe she’s the one who was sent here to kill you, Alpha,” the soldier said, approaching us with a small dagger aimed at me. “Admit it—your mission here is to kill him.”

I started to struggle again, the bag that was slung over my shoulder snapping and falling to the ground to gain attention.

“Stay right there!” Alpha Darius yelled at me in such a compelling tone as he slammed me against the wall once again, my feet were glued to the ground.

He stared at me, and I stared back at him. We each had the same look of surprise on our faces, me because I was wondering how he managed to keep me in place with just a command and him… I wasn’t exactly sure what he was surprised about. He had said those words with intention, which meant that he knew that he could do it.

“We have to talk about this,” I said in an attempt to distract him from the bag that had fallen to the floor. “We’re mates, remember? We have to talk about the mate bond and how this affects—”

“You’re mated to…” the warrior trailed off, his eyes widened in shock.

“There are warriors out there risking their lives for the sake of this pack. I believe you have informed me on what you’re to inform me about. Get out,” Alpha Darius snapped at the warrior.

The warrior glared at me, turning around to leave after a moment of reluctance. I didn’t feel relieved about being left alone in that room with my brother’s killer.

We really don’t have to make this awkward. We can talk once this is all over—after the fight between the rogues and your pack.”

My breath hitched in my throat as he slowly bent over to grab the bag, unzipping it open, his brows raised as he pulled the knife out of the bag with what resembled a scowl on his face.

“Is he right? Were you sent here to kill me?” he asked, staring at the knife with a look that only made me want to sink into the wall behind me, never to be seen again. “Are you seriously a rogue?”

I looked between him and the door as I wondered just how fast I would have to be to get out of there. Unfortunately, he caught my eye movement extremely fast and warned, “The moment you take a step in an attempt to get out of this room, I will take nothing into account. I’ll simply kill you.”

There was no need to overanalyze his words to know that he was telling the truth.

There was now a lie at the tip of my tongue, but something was holding me back from telling that lie. I had no idea what it was, but it held my tongue like a cat. I opened my mouth, but all he got in response was a deep, shaky breath.

He pulled the knife out of its sheath, pressing the silver tip against my throat. The coldness of it caused me to gasp and shiver, my hand grasping his so tightly that I feared I would hurt him.

“I asked you a question,” he reminded. “Are you a rogue who was sent here to kill me? Make me repeat myself one more time and you’ll regret it.”

There was silence, but just enough for me to tell myself that it was of no use.

“Yes,” I admitted with a low voice.

“Yes, what?” he questioned. The knife was now pressing even harder against my skin. I could feel the sizzling heat of the silver against my skin. The wolfsbane was now having an effect on me as my eyes watered.

“I’m a rogue. You killed my brother, and you brought my best friend over to your pack. We never did anything to you. It’s completely unfair for you to attack us when all we have done is exist on our own! Being outcasts doesn’t put us in the position to get hunted.”

I let out a sigh of relief when the knife was taken away from my skin.

Once again, I glanced at the door. All I had to do was—

I let out a loud gasp as a sharp pain tore through my chest, as if a million claws were trying to take my heart out. As I looked down to see what had just happened, my knees buckled and caused me to fall to the floor.

“You…” I wheezed from lack of breath as I raised my head to look at the man the Moon Goddess had cursed me with as a mate.

He had stabbed me with the knife.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked as I watched Darius lock the door to the bedroom and take the key with him. I looked at him with narrowed eyes as he kept the key under his pillow and sat down to face me.“I know you, Zara. And I know enough to recognize when you’re hiding something from me. The last thing I want to do is wake up one day and see that you’re not here again,” he said.“I’m not leaving again, Darius,” I said, knowing it was a lie. “Don’t you think you’re doing too much of this?”“How else am I supposed to do it?” He asked, cocking his head. “How would you react if I left you all alone with Aaron in the dead of the night without saying a word? You may have ended things with the witches, but that’s not the only thing you want to do, is it?”I stared back at him and realized that he could probably see through me. Maybe I carried my anger and hunger for vengeance with me, and he was reading it.“What are you talking about?” I asked, still choosing to pretend like I

“Goddess, Zara. What were you thinking?!” Darius yelled at me as soon as he set his eyes on me, but he rushed over to me and comforted me with a tight hug, as if he was scared of letting me go like I would run away again.“Why would you leave without telling me you were leaving like that? Why would you that? Don’t ever do that again. You have no idea how scared I was. Where did you go?” He bombarded me with questions and pulled away as he looked at me.“I went to the witches’ coven,” I admitted honestly, not seeing any reason to lie about it.“You walked into the midst of witches and didn’t care to tell me about it?” He questioned as he grabbed a blanket and placed it around me to keep me warm.“Would you have let me go if I had told you?” I challenged. From the look on his face, I knew I had my answer. He wouldn’t have.“Where is Stone?” I asked as he started to pace around and ask me if I wanted a warm bath or something to eat. I didn’t want anything until I saw that my son was okay

The wind was now getting heavier, but you knew it wasn’t from you. This was solely from Janet. The tip of her wand was glowing with a yellow light that made your heart skip a beat at the sight of.“You have done more than enough in this place,” Janet said, her eyes turning white as she raised her wand up to the sky.“And you have done more than enough in general,” I retorted, glaring at her as my hands started to heat up with power flowing in my veins. “It’s time to end it.”A bright light emerged from her and blanketed the rest of the witches, one by one.“This is a spell I haven’t perfected all that well,” she said. “But I’ve gotten used to it enough to use it to send you back to wherever you came from.”All at once, the witches started to walk over to her and gather around her. Their wands all glowed the same shade of yellow. I looked down at my body to look at the light which was coming off of me. It was still flickering, a sign that I was in trouble and their attack could hit me

I grabbed a vial out of the strapped pouch along my waist, just one second away from opening it and letting it into the air.“Don’t do anything stupid,” I warned Janet. Before she could respond, one of her witches had casted a spell, and it had hit me in the back with a hard zap that caused me to turn around swiftly. In one quick motion, the vial was open and the poisoned air headed straight for the witch. Almost in the same way it had happened to Cleo, the witch dropped her wand and clawed at her neck.“Merida!” One of the witches who was close to her ran over to where she was, casting spell after spell to stop what was happening but failing.I turned back to Janet, who was staring at what was happening. She looked like she wasn’t breathing or even trying to. Her eyes were welling up with fresh tears. I was met with nothing. I felt nothing at seeing how devastated she was. She wasn’t devastated enough to me.“You know, I just had an idea,” I said, drawing her attention back to me. “J

The small basket of the witch I had killed was sitting beside me on the ground as I watched the sun set.The dull ache was no longer there when I thought about Aeron. I didn’t know why or how it happened so fast. It was my one reason to keep going, to destroy them all. But now, I was met with a wall whenever I thought of him.I was numb.“How do I keep going if you’re not here to remind me to do that?” I asked, not sure if it was directed at Aeron, the moon goddess, or both.Had I been completely abandoned by the moon goddess? When it was dark enough to go unnoticed, I stood up and grabbed the basket in my hand. It was something I would use to show Janet just what had happened to one of her innocent witches because of her actions and what would happen to the rest.I was a bit surprised that she hadn’t gone out to look for the witch as she had been out for quite a while. Perhaps I had overestimated how much she cared for her witches.“This is for you, Aeron. Whether you can see me or n

It had taken a lot of walking, running, and doubting myself, but I never turned back. I never gave up and decided to leave the plan to return to my child. I would only return to Stone when there was assurance for him that there was no future danger to him out there. And now, I had the chance to do that.“Here,” I whispered, panting from walking all the way. The entrance to the witches’ coven stood in front of me, well hidden but not to someone who knew what to look for. Not for a mate scorned. And with that thought came the ache under my skin. The image of Aeron getting stabbed and the person who had done it came to mind. The sun had risen while I was on the way there, and I was sure that Darius would have been searching the highs and the lows for me by now. I also imagined that he would remember the talk we had and the promise he made to me to protect Stone.“You’re only a few feet away,” I said as I sat behind a tree, perfectly hidden away from any witches who would be stepping out
