“I believe you all know what we’re here for as Trace must have given you a brief explanation,” I said when I walked into the office later that evening when the soldiers had gathered after being summoned by Trace.

They all nodded in response to me.

“Trace will be in charge of this team. You will listen to everything he says carefully and follow his instructions throughout this operation to fish out the person or people behind this,” I told them.

As I finished speaking, I looked over at Trace and signaled him to say something as I couldn’t think of anything else to say.

Trace cleared his throat and turned toward the soldiers who stood in an almost straight row. “And just the way you’re going to listen to me, I expect you all to listen to her as well.”

He gestured at me as he said that, and I looked straight ahead with as much confidence as I possibly could.

“If anything, the alpha trusted her to take over this and be our leader,” Trace continued. The soldiers nodded in understanding and

The moon goddess was now sitting by my side and looking ahead. I could do nothing but stare at her in awe. She was so casual about everything, as if it was normal for anyone to be seated by her.“How… How is it possible that I can see you? I just don’t understand.” I shook my head. But just as I thought about all the possibilities and everything that had led to me being here, I turned grim.“Am I dead?” I asked. She remained silent. I didn’t know if she wanted me to figure it out myself or if she just enjoyed the deafening silence.“Please, just tell me what happened. Did I die in battle? I overexerted myself the way Darius warned me not to and I died,” I theorized out loud.“If you were dead, we wouldn’t be meeting in this manner,” she said, correcting me as well as making it known that I wasn’t dead. At least not yet.“Then what? I’m just up here while my body is somewhere down there on the ground?” I asked.“You pushed yourself too hard, Zara,” she explained. “And that’s because yo

The air shifted as the witches made it out of their hiding spots one hy one. It felt as if the earth was holding its breath and knew what was coming next.“What…” I gasped as they all stood there with determined looks. Their wands were in their tight grips as they waited for whatever command they needed from Smith to get started. And he didn’t hesitate.“Get her,” he said to them. One moment, everyone was tense and in shock. The next, it was chaos all at once.I had barely been able to process what I had seen with the vampires and witches working together when a streak of fire was suddenly hurled at me out of nowhere. It seared past my face, barely missing me.The ground shook as the ball of fire hit a tree. The fire crackled as the tree groaned and bent over in a weak fall, unable to withstand such power.“What do you think you’re doing?!” I heard Darius shout at his soldiers. “They’re trying to kill Zara. Attack them before they win this.”Darius and Aeron bared their teeth and lung

“Smith.” My voice was lower than a whisper, but from the way he smirked at me in response, I knew he had heard me.Aeron had let go of me, possibly from how shocked he was and at the realization that he now had a bigger enemy than his brother. But from what I knew so far, he had been in contact with the vampires. Perhaps he was still working with them and I had reason to fear him even more now.“What are you doing here?” Aeron asked, which was enough for me to know that the vampires being here was not a part of his plan. “And how come you can be out in the sun?”Smith never stopped looking at me. It was as if he wanted to make sure every word he said would get to me and not be taken lightly because I was the one he was talking to.“You know, it’s very easy to make a deal with witches when you identify that you have the same enemy as they do,” he said, giving us a hint as to what he did to be able to stand there before us in broad daylight. The witches had taken the side of the vampire

“This is the last thing you want to do, brother,” Darius said as Aeron held me up against his chest in a threatening manner. It made me want to cry as I believed I had no hope of ever escaping.I had seen first hand what Aeron could do with just the snap of his fingers if he set his mind to it. If he wanted, he could kill me now. Especially since he wasn’t sure that the child belonged to him.“I said, don’t take another step forward. You really think I’ll hesitate?” Aeron asked and pulled a knife out from where he had kept it hidden. He held it up against my neck, and I gasped.“Aeron, please. You’re taking this too far. If we talk about it, it could end well. If you want me to go with you to your pack, I will,” I said.“I have no intention of welcoming you to my pack and having your mind all the way over here. I know you’ve gotten close to Darius, and I don’t blame you. He tends to be that manipulative. What I want is assurance,” he said.“What kind of assurance?” Darius asked, seemi

I didn’t think I could guess the reaction time Darius had toward his brother commanding the killing one of his pack members. One second, he was standing with me and the next, he was lunging head first into danger as he tried to attack Aeron.“Darius!” I called out to him, but it was too late. Soldiers from Darius’s side were already clashing with soldiers from Aeron’s side, and it was quickly turning into a bloodbath.I couldn’t keep my eye steady on Aeron. He was quick to avoid Darius, who was out for his blood.“Darius, you need to wait a second!” I called out. I was too afraid for my child’s life to run into the danger. I could hear grunts and growls as some people were starting to shift and attack whoever was not on their side.“Aeron!” I shouted when I realized I would continue to fail to get Darius’s attention when all he could see was red. I couldn’t blame him for it. As an alpha, he had spent years trying to protect his people and his brother came out here all of a sudden to r

“My brother is back?” Darius questioned as he moved towards the door. Before he could hold the knob, I rushed over and blocked him from the door.“What do you think you’re doing?” He asked as he raised a brow at me. “You heard Trace. My brother is out there, trying to terrorize my pack. And he took two of my soldiers with him. He was the one who did this to me.”“I’m sure you’re angry. And you have every right to be.” I put my hands out to him to calm him down. “But you’re still hurt. Whether or not you can admit it out loud, you’re not fully recovered.”“What does that have to do with anything when my pack is in danger and I need to be out there to defend my people?” He questioned.“He has already had you shot once. Who’s to say he won’t do it again?” I asked, and I could see the thought behind his eyes. That gave me enough room to seep into his head and let me do what I wanted to do.“Let me go out there, Darius,” I suggested.“I’m sorry to butt into this conversation, but you’re in
