“How are you feeling? I heard what happened,” Aeron said as he walked into the bedroom the next morning.

In surprise, I sat up and looked at him with narrowed eyes as I cocked my head. “What… What are you doing here?”

“What do you mean what am I doing here? I heard what happened to you and I came up here to find out if you’re fine or not.” He looked down at Stone sleeping beside me, and I could swear he looked just ready to break down and cry.

“It’s fine, Aeron. Everything’s fine. I’m alright. Did your brother tell you what happened?” I asked, smiling at the possibility of Darius telling Aeron what happened and letting him into the pack.

“Darius sent me a letter and invited me over. Can I…?” He didn’t have to finish his question before I figured out what he was trying to ask. His eyes were on Stone the whole time.

“You can carry him, Aeron,” I said with a nod.

As if something in him deflated, his shoulders sagged as he walked over to the other side of the bed where Stone was. He grabb

The witches were more affected by the death of their leader than I thought they would be. It was obvious right from the moment I stepped into their coven and the gloom hit me so much that it almost made me cry.“What in the world…” I trailed off as I looked around to see vines hugging trees so tightly. It was a sight I had not seen the last time I was there. It was now harder for me to walk down the paths because there were vines covering the whole place, making it hard for me to find where to put my legs.As if the trees were not enough, the vines crawled up the houses of everyone. Almost as if it was keeping everyone in and keeping everyone else out.I was torn between calling out for attention and going to see the state of Janet’s house. I settled for walking over to her house, which was the most shocking sight of all. There was barely anything there I could call a house. It was all green with the vines that had wrapped the space up, small flowers opening up to the sky from the vin

Darius and I burst out of the bedroom, instructing the woman who was tasked with taking care of Aaron to join him in the bedroom and lock the door. As soon as we were out of the house, I started to hear the loud noises of people from the borders.“I think you should return to watch over Aaron,” Darius said when he stopped in his tracks and cupped my cheeks in his hands.“No.” I shook my head. “Someone’s taking care of him. If I see the arrow and figure out that it looks like the one from before, then we’ll be sure to rule the rogues out of it.”Darius looked at me, clearly confused at my logic. But I didn’t have the time to explain just yet. I would tell him everything when we reached and saw the arrow, so I took his hand and led him to the border.“There!” He pointed in the direction of the spot where a good number of the guards were gathered and yelling.“He’s dead! There’s nothing we can do!” One of them yelled at someone else who seemed to be bending right beside the body of the s

“It’s someone we know,” Darius said as he paced up and down in the bedroom. I was feeding Aaron, but my mind was racing with the different possibilities of who could have sent that arrow to us.So far, all we knew was that the person was skilled in archery, and the person knew that we would be at Aeron’s pack. Or they had followed us there.“And you’re saying you trust every single soldier you have out there? You don’t think there’s a possibility that one of them could be a spy?” I raised my brow at him.He looked at me with a warning stare and slightly shook his head as if telling me not to go there. I couldn’t help but have that thought, though. Would it be the first time that we were being betrayed by someone we trusted? No.“You do know that if you have any spies among your soldiers, it wouldn’t be your fault. I hope you know that,” I reminded him. “And it wouldn’t make you a horrible alpha of your people. In fact—”“No, Zara.” He stopped me by raising a hand to keep me from going

“Darius!” I yelled. Fortunately, I managed to hold his hand and pull him back to me before he could run to Frank and start the same thing that had gotten us here in the first place.“You don’t want to do this,” I whispered aggressively at him as I pulled him far away from the crowd. “Maintain a level head. This is the same reason why we’re here, Darius. You know that.”He looked down at me as he heaved continuously. Then, he stepped back and raised his hands in surrender to signal to me that he wasn’t going to do anything rash.“I see why the moon goddess picked you and not him,” Frank said to me, starting to press on at Darius’s short fuse. “Maybe you should be the alpha since you’re better at speaking and convincing people instead of him. His brother was miles better than him at being a leader. That’s why his pack is still as backward as it is.”“You’re starting to push it. I have no patience for this nonsense,” Darius warned him. “I know the last thing my brother would want is me b

“What…” One of the pack members finally gathered enough strength to break the silence as the rest of them stared at me and Darius as if we had suddenly conjoined to each other. “I think we probably just heard you wrong. What did you say to us about the vampires and our pack?”Darius looked at me with the same worried look he had been giving me since the moment I told him what Smith wanted. I only blinked at him in assurance that it was going to be fine. In truth, I had no idea if that was even true.“Listen, we know how difficult it is for you all to stomach what you just heard from Darius, and I want—”“Damn right it is!” One of the men who was standing in front of the crowd earlier spoke up. “This is the pack that Alpha Aeron claimed all by himself. Not even his brother was there when he started to build this great pack all alone. And now that he’s dead, you think you can just walk in here and try to claim the land? Forget about claiming the land, even. You want to hand it over to v

Smith swore a blood oath to me and Darius that night, making us know that he was ready to face whatever consequences would come his way if he ever thought of attacking us and went through with it.“Are you sure they’re going to be okay with this arrangement?” I asked Darius as we got closer to Aeron’s pack the next morning to announce to the other wolves what the new plan was.“I’m not sure.” Darius shrugged. I hated the fact that we had made Smith swear so early to us in that moment. What would happen if the pack members refused to come along with us? What would be the next move if they hated the idea of having vampires take over their home?“Do we have to tell them that the vampires are moving into the pack?” I asked Darius, but as soon as the question left my lips, I realized just how selfish it seemed to hide it from them. They deserved to know why this was happening.“That won’t be right. They’ll find out eventually. It’ll make them even angrier when they have to find out by them
