I stood up from the chair as soon as I heard the voice of the moon goddess in my head.

“What… You’re telling me to run?” I asked, looking down at my son who was still covered in the faint glow. Perhaps it was the moon goddess who had placed a protective spell over him.

“Run,” the voice repeated with clearer instructions this time. “Take him and run.”

There was no need for me to ask any further questions. I disconnected the vines they had put around my child and took him in my arms, pulling him closer to my chest.

“You don’t have to worry about a thing. I’ve got you. I’ve got you,” I whispered, kissing his forehead and running out of the cellar.

“Zara, what…” Janet trailed off as her eyes found me and the baby. She looked horrified for a second as she shook her head. “What do you think you’re doing?! He’s not supposed to be off his support machine! Why are you taking him away—”

“Get out of my way,” I warned her. I didn’t think I recognized my own voice, and maybe she heard the change i

“Smith,” I called out when I reached the clearing where a large number of vampires stood. Of course they had come out here at night. It had totally escaped my mind that they couldn’t stand in the sun for long. Then again, the witches had made it possible for that to happen once.“What happened to your immunity to the sun? Did it leave when the witches were weakened?” I asked, more out of curiosity than from a need to mock them.Smith stepped forward from the crowd of vampires with an unamused look on his face.“Don’t forget that you’re the one who summoned us out here. We have a right to leave when we want to. And I won’t hesitate to do just that when I sense that you’re trying to play crooked,” he threatened.“I’m not here to play games with you, Smith. I wouldn’t waste your time like that,” I said. “I’m sure you saw the details, so you know why you’re here.”He crossed his arms, not saying a word. He was silently letting me know that I still had to explain things to him again like h

“Are you alright, Luna?!” I heard a soldier ask me as I opened my eyes with a loud gasp and jumped out of bed as if I had just had the most horrible nightmare ever.“What… Why are you in here?” I asked, squinting at the light pouring into my eyes from the window. That was when I realized that it was morning already.“I heard Aaron crying, and you were screaming about something in your sleep. I’ve been trying to wake you up for minutes now.”At the mention of Aaron, my eyes snapped down to find him finding Aaron close to his chest. He had stopped crying, but he now had a hiccup. I took Aaron out of the soldier’s hands and gave him a thankful and apologetic smile.“I’m so sorry for the inconvenience,” I quickly said as I sat down with Aaron, cradling him to my chest. The only thing I remembered was my call to the moon goddess, but I just couldn’t shake off the feeling that there was something else. It felt like after that meeting with her, I didn’t come here directly. I was taken somewh

“And whose fault was that?” I asked, stepping toward the moon goddess with an irritated frown on my face. “I called on you. Night after night, I reached out to you so you could let me know what next to do.”“Zara, you don’t have to argue when you already knew what to do,” she said, making me stop in my tracks.“And what exactly was I supposed to do?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at her.“I told you. Render your help to all of them. Do not pick a side. I showed you what would happen to each and every creature of the moon if you chose one over the others—”“And isn’t that what I did?!” I yelled, interrupting her. “Didn’t I try my hardest? I offered to help every single one of them. I offered help to the vampires, and they refused it. I still chose to keep them on my side. The itches kidnapped my child, and they refused to give me an explanation for anything!”The moon goddess looked at me incredulously, as if she didn’t know what had been happening the whole time.“I told you once that I

“How are you doing in there?” I asked when I stepped in front of the cell where Darius was sitting down in the dungeon later in the night when I had put Aaron to bed.“Not very good, to be honest,” he said in response as he stood up and walked up to the cell with a weak smile on his face that I had spent enough time to know was fake.“You’re not happy about this arrangement, are you?” I didn’t even need him to give me an answer. He looked down at the ground as if finding what to say but being at a loss still.“I know exactly how this must feel,” I joked, trying my hardest to lift the mood. “After all, you’ve done quite a lot to me. I’m familiar with this.”He gave me a look that made me realize he didn’t find it funny, and I frowned as I reached for his face and cupped it softly and encouraged him, “Tell me what’s wrong, Darius. You don’t have to hide anything from me. Just tell me how you feel about this.”“This has always been the problem with us, Zara,” he said. “You’ve been lookin

“TAKE COVER!” I heard Gray scream as he grabbed Aera and started to run off to wherever he believed was safe.It was too late for a lot of them as the icicles started to pierce through heads and shoulders, falling them to the ground like helpless flies in my house.I felt a single tear fall down my face, but I wiped it off and shook my head. The more screams I heard, the more I felt the urge to stop it and leave since I had already caused enough damage. But another part of me was there. The part that told me that I hadn’t done nearly enough. That this was probably only a little bit of it, compared to what they had done to my parents’ pack.“I didn’t want to kill any of you,” I whispered to no one in particular. From the screams and the scrambling for protection, I knew they barely heard me and didn’t care to know what I was saying. At once, the painful and sharp rain stopped when I willed it to, and I was back on the ground.I’d had enough. I looked around to see fallen bodies left an

The rogues would most likely kill me faster than the witches had attempted to. Not just because they had trained me and taught me everything I needed to know, but because I was less prepared. And I had done that on purpose. The witches had magical powers that could be on par with the ones I had, and they had tricks up their sleeves as I had seen. But the rogues…they relied purely on brutal strength and tactics.“Everyone, get into battle position. Forget about fighting fair. She might be one person against all of us, but I’m sure she knows that. She wouldn’t just come here all alone without a plan,” Gray told them.As instructed, they all started to separate and go into different positions.I turned around where I stood and studied each and every one that my eyes could pick up, calculating and estimating how many more people were hiding and planning sneak attacks.“I’m done playing nice with you, Zara,” Gray told me. “I’m giving you the last chance to walk out of here with your head.”
