The Alpha’s heir

The moon was on full display, showing that the full moon ceremony was still in progress, but that didn't stop a dark brown wolf from running deep into the forest. He was getting close to the border, another territory far from view. Crossing the border could make him a rogue as he would be seen as a wolf without a pack, opening him to as much danger as possible. But he cared less, he only wanted to be far away from everyone and everything.

"LUCAS!!!"  Sophia mind linked to her son, hoping he would hear because he was too far away. Lucas heard but didn't want to stop, just a few more kilometers to get there and he'll be free.

“LUCAS STOP NOW!!!” Sophia used her Luna voice on her son, something she rarely does.

Lucas stopped running and listened to his mother. Unlike most wolves, he was already tired.

“I don’t know how clear you can hear me but I know you do. Whatever you’re trying to do isn’t worth it, I love you no matter what. Just come back home.” She tried talking to him more calmly than before but Lucas didn’t respond. No one understood him apart from her, she didn’t care if he was a suitable heir or not. She just wants her son to be fine. So he changed his mind and decided to go back. His mind linked back in a tired voice.

“I’ll be home soon mom, I just need to be alone.” He mind linked back. His voice was faint, almost not there but Sophia heard and with that she closed the link between her and Lucas.

Lucas was sad and angry, so he did what any wolf in his state would do. He howled. He shifted back to his human form and searched for a river nearby. Luckily, he found one. It wasn't deep but it would do. It took him a few minutes to take off his shirt and pants and dive into the cold water. If there was anything Lucas enjoyed doing aside from reading, that would be swimming. After being under the water for a while, he came back up, meeting a scowling Ethan.

“What?”  Lucas asked not liking the fact that Ethan came to interrupt his quiet time.

“Your mother is worried you idiot” Ethan barked.

"I know. She mind-linked me. I'm still alive as you can see." Lucas pointed out.

“It’s dangerous Lucas and you know it. Alphas are all strengthening their connection with their pack members during the full moon and this makes rogues go wild.” Ethan shouted, trying to make Lucas see reasons why he shouldn’t be out alone.

“Well, what would you have me do? Stand there and look like a loser in front of the whole pack.” Lucas shot back. Ethan sighed. He was worried too.

“So you felt nothing again. Not even a little tiny…”

“Nothing Ethan, I felt nothing. Why did the moon goddess make me the Alpha’s son if she would give me the abilities.”  Ethan was cut off before he could finish.

“I still haven’t found my mate” he added.

“You will” Ethan reassured.

“I’m really sorry man, I know what you’re going through but we need to get back to the pack house.” Ethan pleaded. Not wanting to argue further, Lucas reluctantly got out of the water. He pushed his wet blonde her out of his face and put on his shirt and pant. The two friends walked back to the pack house in silence with their minds wandering in different directions.

A few hours earlier

As it was the tradition of werewolves, Alpha Leo drank from the bowl and passed it to his Luna, Sophia who took a sip and passed it to Lucas. Wherever the water finishes, the Alpha takes another bowl drinks from it, and continues the ritual till the last person in the pack drinks from it. After this, they are to hold hands and shift into their wolf form. This is to ensure the alpha’s connection to every member of the pack.

Lucas was still, he waited for a sensation or anything, but nothing came. He was seen as the weak heir and this got his parents worried. There were so many things he couldn’t do. His wolf wasn't strong enough and this made his strength too poor for an alpha's heir. His sense of smell was also too low. He could only mind link and shift. Though he was well-built physically, his muscular arms were not hard to notice and his height was perfect, taking after his father. Regardless of all these, his parents loved him, especially his mom, he had a different connection with her and his best friend Ethan was always there to give his support.

“Where have you two been?” Beta Levi called out, snapping both boys out of their thought. Without waiting for either of them to reply, he said;

“To the Alpha’s office now.” Beta Levi turned and walked back into the pack house and as expected, the boys followed.

Getting to the Alpha’s office, the boys gave a respectful bow.

“Alpha. You called.” Lucas spoke first.

“Lucas, get ready. You’ll be going with me to the next council of Alphas meeting” Alpha Leo said while going through some documents.

“Council of what, why?” Lucas asked. He knew fully well what the council of Alphas entailed. A gathering of ten Alphas to discuss the progress of their packs and tackle difficult matters. The aura of an Alpha was intimidating not to talk of ten of them. The Alphas were allowed to bring their heir if they wished but Alpha Leo never thought of taking Lucas along till now.

“If you’d one day rule this pack as a leader, then you should start attending the council meeting. Moreover, it would be wise to let the council know what has been going on, it shouldn't be a secret." Alpha Leo's voice rose a bit.

“Dad, ple… Lucas tried to speak. But the Alpha growled.

“That’s final Lucas and don’t you dare disobey me. I could feel the connection with every single member of the pack but not with my son. You've not shown any trait of being an alpha's heir and you consider that fine. Do you have any idea what your weakness can do to the pack? If our enemies find out that my son doesn't have what it takes to rule, what do you think will happen? Answer me!!!" By now Alpha Leo's aura had filled the office making the other three wolves bow their heads. It was intimidating and weakening.

“Alpha?” Beta Levi called

Alpha Leo tried to calm himself down. He was disturbed by his son's weakness and even the pack members were getting scared. Lucas stood there transfixed watching his father have a breakdown. Going to the Council meeting meant a decision would be made about him. He was terrified of what decision they would take.

"The meeting is in two days." Leo said without looking to see anyone's reaction.
