Chapter 3

"Laura should go train with Jason. He wants to see your abilities before he hires you "Gary said as he walked away from me. I dashed down the hall and out the front door.

I dashed into the gym from the gavel courtyard. I came across a man with brown hair and blue eyes punching a bag. I jumped as the punching bag ripped the chain and flew across the room.

"You must be the Laura girl I’ve heard so much about," he said breathing heavily.

"So you wanted to see me," I said, smiling. In one swift motion, he grabbed my arm and pinned me to the floor. I winced as my back slammed into the hard wood floor.

"Thank you for the heads-up."

"You won't get a heads up in the field," he snapped, gripping my throat. I inhaled deeply and swung my arm, knocking his hands away before kicking him off of me.

With such persuasion, I scrambled to my feet quickly. I moved slowly so as not to be noticed as being faster than everyone else.

"What is it that can't keep up?" As he stared at me, I smirked. He rushed up to me, exposing his backside. I swing my leg and easily knock him to the ground. He collapsed to the ground, his eyes wide with surprise. "When you charge at people, you show your true colors."

"How come no one has told me?" He inquired as I laughed.

"It's not super obvious; my parents just taught me to analyze movements," I explained, offering my hand. As he smiled at me, I drew him up.

"We should be fine with the Gemini," he said, causing my smile to falter slightly.

"Yeah," I agreed, pulling my hair back.

"What's the harm in killing them? They are a threat to us ", he inquired.

"I don't think they're dangerous, or we'd know where they are," I said, looking him in the eyes. He gave me an unreadable look before walking over to his gym bag. He took out a gun and handed it to me.

"Aim for the target," he said, motioning to a piece of paper hanging on the wall across the gym. I kept my arms straight and my gaze fixed on the target. I fired three rounds at the target, all of which struck the center. I shrugged and returned the gun. "Oh no, I might be out of work."

"That's right. That would never be tolerated by my father "I spoke softly.

"Do you always follow your father's orders?" Jason inquired as I nodded.

"I do, indeed. I joined the guard division solely to protect him "As Jason's gaze locked on mine, I whispered.

"How come he threatened your parents?" Jason inquired, his face betraying his confusion.

"He murdered my mother and forced me to join the guard. If he was going to force me to join, I figured I should protect the only family I had left "Tears welled up in my eyes as I remembered my mother.

"He killed her for no apparent reason?" As I looked at Jason, he asked.

"He thought she knew where the Gemini Lycans were," I exclaimed as his eyes grew soft. "She knew absolutely nothing!" I felt bad about lying to Jason, but I had to convince everyone that I knew nothing.

"Are you certain? Gary would never attack a member without reason "Jason inquired, prompting me to walk away.

"That's all for now!" I yelled angrily as I walked back into the main house thinking of my next line of action. When I heard hushed conversation, I came to a halt. Brenda and my father were standing outside when I noticed them. I walked along the building's edge until I was within hearing distance.

"Gary needed a name, so I gave him your wife’s name. He was starting to wonder where I got my information. The books you gave us were extremely useful in determining how to locate the boy "Brenda expressed herself as my father smiled at her.

"Anything for my girl," he said, his heart sinking. He betrayed my entire family because she was his daughter. As I watched them speak, tears streamed down my cheeks. He betrayed Mom and increased the likelihood of my death. He obviously does not care about my brother.

"How could you look me in the eyes when you’ve been lying this whole time?" I exclaimed as they both spun around on me.

"Laura," my father exclaimed, but I silenced him with a glare before turning to face Brenda.

"You, too! Why didn't you tell me we were sisters?" Pain filled my eyes as I gasped.

"Laura I desperately wanted to tell you, but Gary made me promise not to tell unless he spared you. I told him he couldn't hurt you, but he needed a reason "Brenda begged me to listen with her eyes. I glared at my father, who had betrayed my trust in the most heinous way. I trusted him with my life only for him to demonstrate how little he values his children. Brenda was the only person who mattered to him. It hurt so much to see what love I hadn't realized was missing was now clearly missing.

"Don't you see you're putting me in danger? They've assigned me to go after the Gemini Lycans "I snapped, not knowing how much he told Brenda.

"I'm sorry, but Brenda required assistance. Her position is jeopardized by the Geminis

"My father said something that enraged me. Before going inside, I slapped him across the face. I walked right past Gary, who quickly grabbed my arm.

"Are you upset about what happened?" I could see right through his tricky concern when he asked. He just wanted more information from me that I was never going to give him. His only worth to me was leverage in a futile war against the Gemini Lycans.

"Don't act like you care, you killed my mother," I snarled as I pushed away from him and made my way up the stairs and into the study. I sat at my desk, pulling out a photograph of my brother. He reminded me so much of myself. Same blonde hair, same brown eyes. He was now the only thing that mattered. I was going to find him no matter what; I was going to save my brother at any cost, even if it meant sacrificing my own life.
