Chapter 2

When I returned home, my father was arguing with Gary inside the front door. I jumped off the bike and dashed up the steps and into the house.

"Dad, please stop!" I jumped in front of my father in a bid to keep him away from Gary.

"No, you are too young to be a member of the guard. I will never allow you stay here, "he said as I looked over at Gary, who was, to my utmost surprise, smiling mischievously. He wanted to make my father angry so that he would do something to kill him quickly. He was looking for an excuse to question him about the Gemini Lycans.

"This is the only way to keep you safe, Dad," I said quietly as he stiffened. "Mom is no longer alive."

"Buttercup, this isn't the place for you," he said quietly as Larry rushed over to hand Gary the knife. Larry shifted his gaze to my father, his posture becoming defensive.

He recognized my father as a threat. Gary raised it to inspect the blade. The blade was in motion in an instant as he attempted to stab my father. As worry flooded my system.

When nothing happened to my father, I sighed with relief. He didn't have a single scratch on his body. In theory, I knew how the knife worked, but I didn't believe the rumors.

"You promised not to hurt him, damn it. You had no idea if that knife was going to hurt him, "I snapped as my father pulled me away from Gary.

"Calm down," he said in my ear, prompting me to take a breath.

"I had to test it on someone," he explained before stepping in front of me. Gary would be tipped off if my father did anything else to protect me. He'd notice something was wrong.

"Gary, if I find out that you had my daughter killed while serving on the guard, I'll come after you and your family with every fiber of my being, even if it means tracking down the Gemini Lycans myself," he growled, his eyes filled with Lycan rage.

"Are you going to threaten me, old man?" Gary clenched his teeth. As he locked his gaze on my father, I felt his alpha powers wash over the entire room.

"Please, Dad," I begged, tears welling up in my chocolate eyes. He took a step back, facing me. He cupped my face in his hands, his dark eyes sad.

"Be safe," he said as he kissed my forehead and exited the room. I exclaimed as a single tear streamed down my cheek. I quickly wiped it away before turning to face Gary.

"Because of your father, you'll be joining Jason in hunting the Gemini Lycans at the end of this month," Gary said, thrusting the knife into my hand. The thought of the knife blade touching my hand made me nervous. I quickly stowed the knife before following Brenda upstairs to her study. I regained control of myself as I approached Brenda. I was standing at the top of the stairs, talking to Brenda.

"Would you like me to wait in the study or the hall, Miss?" I inquired, bowing my head respectfully.

"In the study," she said as I entered the grand room. I took a look around the large room, which had dark wood floors and a roaring fireplace. The desk was in the center of the room, with chairs scattered around it. As she sat at her desk with piles of books on the Gemini Lycans, I leaned against the wall next to the door.

"You've done an extensive research on them already," I exclaimed, making her laugh.

"They are extremely dangerous. Everything I've discovered indicates that they have mood swings capable of killing anyone in the pack. They can't always keep their power under control. Before I was born, my uncle was killed by a Gemini Lycan "Brenda spoke as tears welled up in her eyes, her smile fading with each word. I could see anger dancing with sadness in her eyes.

"I'm sorry he died," I said quietly, blaming myself. I hadn't killed him, in fact, I hadn't even been born yet, but I still felt responsible.

"It's in the past," she said, returning her attention to her book. "According to the book, we can track them down. Jason is our best tracker; we just need to show him how they smell."

"Aren't they all going to smell different?" I asked, fear coursing through my veins.

"Yes, but they still smell like Lycans, just more concentrated," Brenda said as I approached her and took a seat across from her.

"Can I assist you?" My curiosity was piqued greatly by this new piece of information, so I inquired.

"Sure," she said as she handed me a book. I flipped through it until I came across an old legend about the Gemini Lycans. According to legend, the Gemini Lycans used to rule the packs and there was peace. Are Brenda and Gary oblivious to this?

"It says they used to rule and there was no war," I said, my gaze locked on hers. Her green eyes were glistening with fear.

"The legend is irrelevant," she said, nodding as if I believed her. I returned to my book and resumed reading. A line that two alphas mated to create the power concentration to create the Gemini Lycans piqued my interest once more. And Gemini Lycans are the offspring of the pack's most powerful union to date. When I discovered the true reason we are now being hunted, I paused. We were born with the ability to be alphas. I shook my head as I closed the book.

"Nothing useful," I sighed as I stood up. I walked over to the wall and stood against it again. "I hope you get rid of them." I lied in order to gain her trust.

"We will," she said as she went about her research. I remembered my brother, who was alone and in grave danger. He needed my assistance right away if he was to survive.
