Chapter 1

I didn’t go straight home.

If I went back now, my parents would start asking why I had turned in my papers so early.

And if my dad found out that Jason Turner had held onto my exam ticket and ID outside the hall, he would have marched straight to the Turner house demanding an explanation.

Too much trouble either way.

Besides, I had already secured an Early Admission spot at Harvard University. Today’s college entrance exam was just a formality.

Since Jason could calculate even our eighteen-year-long friendship for Summer, I realized that today I had finally seen his true colors.

I turned and walked into a café across from the exam hall, planning to sit there for a while.

I’d head home after the exam ended, pretending I had taken it like everyone else.

About fifteen minutes before the last subject was scheduled, two familiar figures emerged from the school gate.

Jason and Summer had already turned in their papers.

Hand in hand, they looked completely at ease, smiling as if nothing could touch them.

Reporters waiting outside immediately raised their microphones.

“You two submitted early. Confident about the exam? Do you have a dream college in mind?”

Jason glanced at Summer, his gaze soft enough to melt steel.

“The questions weren’t hard. We agreed that we’d both get into Cornell.”

Summer blushed and nodded lightly, leaning slightly against him, like a little bird perched on a branch.

I bit my straw and stared at the perfect couple on the screen, a strange ache settling in my chest.

Eighteen years. My childhood friend.

I had always believed that even if he grew close to Summer, the class beauty, and even developed feelings for her in high school, our place in each other’s hearts would remain special.

In sophomore year, some jealous girls had spread rumors that I was obsessively chasing him, trying to come between him and Summer.

When Jason found out, he kicked over a desk in front of the whole class.

Pointing at the girls, he shouted,

“Emily is my childhood friend. If anyone dares to spread lies about her again, don’t blame me for being merciless!”

At the time, I was certain I had a place in his heart.

But now it seemed that had only been an act to maintain his image as loyal and sentimental.

The café doorbell jingled.

I snapped out of my thoughts and met Jason’s gaze. He had finished the interview.

Jason paused, then curled his lips into a mocking smile.

“I thought you’d fail and run home crying to your parents.

“What, hiding out here? Afraid of getting scolded?”

Summer tugged gently at his sleeve and spoke softly,

“Jason, don’t say that to Emily. She’s probably upset right now.”

Watching them move in perfect harmony, a wave of nausea hit me.

“Upset?” I leaned back in my chair, coldly staring at him.

“Why would I be upset over people like you?”

Jason’s eyes instantly reddened as he jumped to his feet.“Emily…“You… you already had Early Admission? You took the college entrance exam just to accompany me?”I didn’t look at him.“I… I didn’t know…” Jason stammered, taking a step forward.“I thought you just had good grades. Repeating a year wouldn’t be a big deal…”Watching him like this, heartbreak written all over his face, I felt nothing but disgust.I poured myself another glass of wine, raising it toward the classmates who had just mocked me but now looked like they wished they could sink through the floor.“Cheers to all of you. Wishing you all a bright future and peace on your own paths.”I set the glass down and, with Jason’s reddened eyes and Summer’s pale face behind me, turned and walked away. After the Teacher Appreciation Banquet, I completely cut off contact with my high school classmates. There were still more than two weeks before I had to report to Harvard University. The next day, my phone buzzed with a text fr

“I’m very happy about today’s Teacher Appreciation Banquet.“Our class’s overall performance on the college entrance exam was outstanding.“Especially Jason and Summer, they both met Cornell’s admission threshold. Excellent. Congratulations to both of you.”Jason and Summer exchanged proud smiles. The teacher’s gaze scanned the room and landed on me in the corner. His expression softened into one of pride and relief.“And today, the student I most want to recognize is Emily Quinn.”Everyone froze, staring in confusion.Jason’s smile stiffened, and Summer’s eyes widened in disbelief.Liam couldn’t contain himself.“Sir, Emily didn’t even take the last science exam. Why are you praising her?”“She didn’t take the science exam?”The teacher blinked, puzzled.“Who told you she didn’t take it?”“She said so herself!” Sophie pointed at me urgently.“She didn’t go into the exam hall that day and even used a fake Harvard Early Admission letter to fool everyone!“Don’t be fooled, sir!”“A fake

Someone had posted a screenshot of Summer’s announcement in the group chat, along with a “shipping” sticker.[Jason is awesome, Summer is awesome, Cornell couple alert! So enviable!][This is skillfully putting someone in their place. Not like some people who bomb the exam, disappear, and even fake an admission letter. Now that the results are out, I bet they can’t even say a word!][I bet someone’s hiding under the covers crying right now. Repeating a year isn’t fun, haha.]I scrolled past expressionlessly and left the group again. Then a message from my homeroom teacher popped up.[Emily, where have you been these past two weeks?][Tomorrow night is our class Teacher Appreciation Banquet. The teacher has something important to say. You have to be there.]I typed a quick reply. My homeroom teacher had been a great mentor. Throughout high school, he had stood up to school pressures to give me the freedom to focus on physics competitions. Without him, I wouldn’t have secured the Early A

Back home, Dad finally couldn’t hold back his seriousness.“Emily, tell me the truth. What exactly happened today?“Why did Jason insist that you didn’t take the last exam?“Did you even go into the exam hall yesterday?”I knew I couldn’t hide it any longer. If I didn’t tell them, my parents would remain in the dark and feel guilty because of our families’ long friendship.“I didn’t go in,” I said calmly.Mom’s face went pale with shock.“Even with Early Admission, if you’re taking the exam, you should take it seriously.“You shouldn’t treat the college entrance exam as a joke.”I met her eyes.“Jason held my exam ticket and ID.”I calmly recounted everything that had happened outside the exam hall yesterday afternoon.Mom trembled with anger.“He could have ruined your entire future. Our families have been close for eighteen years. How could he do this?”Dad stayed silent and reached for his phone to call Jason’s dad.I quickly stopped him.“Dad, it’s over now. After today, it’s clear

On my phone screen was the electronic acceptance letter for the Physics Talent Program, issued by Harvard University. It clearly displayed my information and the official digital seal.Jason froze for a moment.“Harvard… Early Admission?”Standing next to him, Summer forced a small, tense smile.“Aunt… did you… send the wrong image?“Early Admission spots at Harvard are extremely rare, and applicants have to pass multiple rounds of written and interview tests.“Emily… she usually excels, but how could she quietly...”“Why couldn’t she?” Dad interrupted coldly.“Emily has been in the top three of her grade in every major exam throughout high school. Getting an Early Admission spot is hardly surprising.”Jason’s eyes flicked, as if he understood, and then he suddenly smiled.“Uncle, I know Emily didn’t finish her last exam. As parents, you must feel awkward about it. You wanted to save her some face. We get that.“But really, there’s no need to make up stories about it, right?”He glance

This dinner was hosted jointly by the Turner and Hayes families, and it was impressive, taking over the banquet hall at The Grand Bay Hotel.Almost all of our classmates had shown up, seated at several large round tables. Our family was seated at the main table with Jason’s parents.“Emily, come sit!” Jason’s dad greeted warmly. My parents smiled and exchanged pleasantries, congratulating Jason and Summer on their exam results. Not long after, Jason and Summer approached the main table carrying glasses of juice.Jason was dressed formally today. He glanced at me, a faint mocking smile playing on his lips, and let out a deliberately exaggerated sigh.“Mr. and Mrs. Quinn, I’m really glad Emily could come today.“She skipped the last subject yesterday. I thought she wouldn’t even have the face to show up.”The table went silent. My mom blinked, turning to me.“Emily, what do you mean skipped the exam?”Classmates at nearby tables perked up, clearly enjoying the drama.I hadn’t told my par
