Chapter 379

Penulis: Light Breeze
The scene seemed to become etched onto Eleanor's heart. She was distracted for the rest of the journey after that.

She only returned to her senses when Russell parked the car where he was supposed to meet his colleagues. He unbuckled his seat belt and looked at Eleanor tenderly. "I need to get going. Let's meet up again when I'm back, and remember to call me."

She nodded. "Alright. Stay safe."

Russell got out of the car and dragged his suitcase to the bus that was supposed to pick him up. The coordinator teased him, and he smiled. He turned to wave at Eleanor, indicating that she could go.

Eleanor turned the car around and drove off. The car slowly disappeared into the rain. The sky had turned completely dark, and the city's neon lights did nothing to make the atmosphere more light-hearted. In fact, there was something beautiful yet defeated about them.

It was about 7:00 pm by the time Eleanor got back to her apartment. A silver Rolls-Royce was parked outside—Dexter's car.

Russell was stunned. She was pregnant? How was that even possible? They had only had sex for two or three times in total. What were the odds? Besides, Emily told him she was in her safe window, which was the reason why he hadn't used protection. How could she have gotten pregnant?Russell had no love for Emily, so he made a swift decision. "Get an abortion. I'll give you half a million as compensation."Emily's eyes were full of tears, and her face full of reluctance. "Russell, this is a life, and our flesh and blood. I can't do something so cruel."Russell's face darkened. "I have a girlfriend, and we're already talking about marriage."Emily bit her lip, not daring to reveal the truth. Russell was in a hurry to find Eleanor, so he shook Emily off and said, "Think about it, Emily. I'm never going to marry you."Then, he turned around and left heartlessly.Emily stood in a thin cotton coat, watching his retreating figure. Her lips trembled as she murmured to herself, "But when w

In the blink of an eye, winter had arrived. The relationship between Eleanor and Russell had been going smoothly. His parents were quite fond of Eleanor and had been subtly nudging the couple toward marriage. That Saturday, they invited Eleanor over again. Originally, they had planned to invite Maisie along as well, but she had gone back to the Ziegler residence. The small villa was warm and cozy. The Shelton family was highly educated, but they didn't hire a housekeeper. All household chores were handled by Russell's mother, Constance Page.Eleanor felt it was inappropriate to just sit around, so she accompanied Constance inside the kitchen. While she cooked, Eleanor cut the fruits.Constance smiled. "You don't need to keep me company. Go out and relax."Constance was open-minded. She knew that Eleanor was career-minded. Even after marriage, she wouldn't be expected to live with them, nor would she be confined to the kitchen. Therefore, she thought it was better to leave a good i

Dexter wanted it badly. He had not had sex for more than two years. Of course, he wanted it.He stared at her for a long time, but in the end, reason won. Eleanor was no longer his.He fell heavily to his side, sinking into the soft mattress. Though the lights were off, he still felt it was too bright, so he shielded his eyes with his hand. After a while, he couldn't help but turn toward her again, quietly watching. She wasn't his anymore. The room was silent. Dexter hadn't left, but he didn't stay in the master bedroom. Instead, he went to the living room and slept on the sofa.He didn't grab a blanket as he simply removed his wool overcoat and draped it over himself. In the late-autumn air, he lay quietly, staring into the dark of the night.Just now, he had said a lot of nonsense. At the break of dawn, Eleanor woke up. She was still wearing the dress from last night, but her overcoat was gone. After a while, fragmented memories of last night flooded in. After Erika dropped h

After a while, Julian stood at the doorway. He looked at Landon and said coolly, "What did I teach you? Are you losing your composure like this? Revealing your trump card so early is a major taboo in business."Landon nodded obediently. "I understand, Daddy. I won't make this mistake again."Landon was only eight years old, but he carried himself like a polished elite. This was evidence of how strictly Julian had raised him.Evelyn was still in Landon's arms. She blinked adorably at him, then reached out toward Julian, wanting him to carry her. Julian extended his arms, and the youngest princess of the Ziegler family sat on them. She cupped his face and planted a loud kiss on his cheek. Julian's heart melted instantly. For now, he decided to let his son off the hook.Gabriella whispered to Maisie, "Daddy spoils our little sister the most."Of course, she knew their father loved all three of his children dearly. But Evelyn was the youngest, and she genuinely liked her too.Maisie

The next second, the mirror shattered into pieces. Dexter's hand was stained with blood. It was a disturbing sight. That weekend, Eleanor was preparing some snacks for Maisie, as well as for the three children of Julian and Willow. Her little lavender backpack was stuffed to the brim.Just as she finished, there was a knock on the apartment door. Layla had returned to her hometown for a few days, and no one else was home, so Eleanor went to open the door.Standing outside was Dexter. It was late autumn, and he wore a thin black wool coat, highlighting his tall and upright figure. His gaze was deep, and he lowered his voice as he said, "About what happened at the banquet that day, I'm sorry."Since they shared a child, Eleanor didn't want to escalate things. She responded coolly, "I didn't take it to heart."Dexter pressed on, "Then who do you take to heart? Michael Hall or Russell Shelton?"Eleanor remained silent.Dexter softened. "When are you getting married? I'll prepare a

As soon as Eleanor said that, Dexter's face darkened. It was a sign that he was about to lose his temper.Jessica called out sweetly, "Dexter."Dexter didn't respond. He just lowered his head and gently brushed off the moisture on his jacket. After about ten seconds of silence, he turned and walked out of the banquet hall.Around them, people started whispering."She's still the mother of his child. He didn't even say anything.""With his temper, I'm surprised he managed to hold back.""Looks like they've both moved on. Didn't you see that beautiful assistant beside him? I heard she comes from a good family. They're probably getting married soon, right? An old flame can't compare to someone new."Eleanor stood in the middle of the storm of gossip, not saying a word.Fortunately, Michael was at the banquet as well. He stepped in to defuse the situation. "I've been looking for you! So, this is where you were. There are two venture capitalists there. I'll introduce you to them. Yo

Jessica didn't dare to make her intentions too overt; she didn't want to push Dexter too hard. So, she said to the boutique manager, "I'll take this one. The waist is a little loose, so take it in about two inches. I'll drop by another day to try it on again."The manager nodded with a smile. "Alright. Just let us know beforehand. This dress is 32 thousand dollars. Would you like to pay by card or cash?"Before Jessica could say anything, Dexter said, "Put it on the Ziegler family's tab."That filled Jessica with sweetness. The dress wasn't too expensive, but she knew she was the only one who could enjoy such preferential treatment. She'd achieved her goal, so she swiftly changed back into her work clothes. She wanted to look her most professional when standing by Dexter's side—she wanted him to know that she was the best person to be his wife.Sure enough, Dexter glanced at her a few times. The way she looked and acted reminded him of someone who'd once also been by his side like

Eleanor and Russell dated like every other couple would. They met about five or six times over two months, and they were both happy with each other. It was mid-November in the blink of an eye, and it was late fall. Eleanor received a call from Russell at 4:00 pm—he wanted to treat her to a cup of coffee. She was surprised. They'd just met for a movie the day before, after all. Still, she wasn't the type to rain on anyone's parade. She happened to have some free time, so she drove over to meet him.She arrived at the cafe at 4:30 pm. Russell was already there, and he had a suitcase at his feet. Once Eleanor took her seat across from him, he pushed a cup of coffee toward her and smiled apologetically. "I received an urgent order to go on a business trip for about a month, so I invited you out before leaving. I hope I'm not keeping you from anything."She wore an expensive, well-tailored suit that clung to her curves. She was well-educated, elegant, and had a good career. Naturally, R
