Chapter 405

Author: Light Breeze
Leonard arrived at the appointed place on the same afternoon. Michael designated a coffee shop to be their meetup location. This was the first time they had seen each other, and neither of them was particularly chatty.

Michael sent his digital medical history to Leonard, who went through it intently. The longer the latter read, the deeper his frown became.

Michael had small-cell lung cancer, which was the most aggressive of all lung cancers. What was worse, it had spread through his bloodstream at an early stage. Surgery and chemotherapy would have to be conducted, but even then, there was no guarantee.

The look on Leonard's face gave Michael a pretty good idea about how serious his condition was.

Raising his head, he turned his gaze to the bustling street and the countless pedestrians in it, brimming with life and energy. Even the homeless people would jump with joy when they found a plastic bottle that was casually thrown away.

The liveliness and joy were what one might call

Eleanor and Michael were upstairs all alone in bed. Just as she was about to get up, he grabbed her wrist and spoke in a low, hoarse voice."I sensed something funny about the way you looked at me earlier. My darling, what can I do for you?"Eleanor seized the moment and leaned on his shoulder, feigning frustration. "The way you handled my mom tells me just how natural it comes to you when dealing with women. "Thinking about it has made me realize that I've gotten the short end of the stick. You've been flirtatious and flamboyant in the past. Who knows how many ladies' knees have gone weak because of you?"Michael's voice immediately dropped a notch. "Are you jealous? It's all but old trivialities forgotten in the flow of history."Resting his head in his hands, he hung his head and stared at her. "Right now, I'm more concerned that my heart yearns to do something that my body can't keep up with."The married couple was spending a lovely, slightly flirtatious moment together whe

The past drifted in a quiet stillness. Even though Eleanor welcomed a new life, her old wounds still haunted her, aching beyond measure. Taking a few moments to still her throbbing heart, she waited until her emotions had settled before returning to the ward. She tried to appear relaxed, but Michael still saw through her. He knew something was wrong. Pulling Eleanor to his side, he asked, "What's wrong? Why are your eyes red?"She shook her head in response. "It's nothing. Dust got into my eyes."Michael held her hands and scanned her for a long time before saying affectionately, "If you see those two again, you'll stay away from dust, won't you?"Eleanor hummed in response, her eyes alight with joy. She would no longer let the past trap her and bind her from the happiness the future had in store for her. …Two days later, Michael underwent surgery. It was a smashing success, and no chemotherapy was required for the time being. That said, it would be best if he could rest for

After the New Year, Michael prepared to admit himself to the hospital for the upcoming surgery. They kept it a secret from the kids. As far as they knew, he was only in the hospital for an appendectomy. The night before he was admitted, Eleanor checked his luggage once more and didn't feel at ease until she was sure that he had brought everything. In the still, quiet night, Michael returned to his bedroom after he was done with work and found his wife in the walk-in closet. She was looking at a family picture, deeply lost in thought.Hugging Eleanor from behind, he said softly, "Erika told me that you wanted to sell the company. If you can't manage it for the time being, we can hire someone professional and run it. I can help you with that."She leaned on his shoulder and shook her head. "Just sell it."The future held too many uncertainties after Michael's surgery. With three kids in their home and the fourth one on the way, she would need to pour much time and effort into them

After dinner, Michael gave the kids some pocket money. Eleanor was the mistress of the house, and she went on to give the others a bonus for the occasion. Over a dozen of the household staff received 20 thousand dollars in cash, which didn't count toward their overtime pay or basic salary. Everyone thought highly of her afterward. After she was done giving the bonus and returned to the living room, Maisie pulled her aside and said, "Mom, Michael asked you to come to the second floor. He said it's a surprise."Eleanor thought it was a big monetary gift. It had never occurred to her that he would have asked her to go to the balcony on the second floor. He thoughtfully draped a thick coat over her shoulder and took the kids along to gaze out into the dark night. All of a sudden, fireworks shot into the sky nearby. One after another, they exploded into a beautiful, vibrant symphony of colors. It almost looked like the huge fireworks were about to engulf the night. Thick, vivid colo

Esther's answer unnerved Julian. After a long period of silence, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "There's a patient who has lung issues, and I want Mr. Frost to take a look at him, but he's going to have to keep it a secret."Yeah. Not even my Mom and Dad."Esther, standing to the side, felt a deep resonance in her heart. After Julian was done talking on the phone, he slowly leaned forward, turned sideways, and stared at the eight-pane window frame. The evening sun gave the transparent glass an orange tinge. It looked very bright and vibrant, but there was a great weight in his heart.Julian had no idea why he chose to let Eleanor have what she had. Perhaps it was because she had been wronged over and over. He felt so heartbroken, and he wasn't sure that he was projecting his guilt on her because of what happened to Willow all those years ago.…The door to the VIP ward in the hospital creaked open. Surprisingly, Declan stood at the door. He had a food container wi

Melanie woke up early in the morning. The air was thin in winter. New Year drew close, and the Ziegler family's household staff went out to make purchases and prepare for the upcoming holiday. Cars drove in and out of the porch, and black smoke billowed endlessly into the air, painting a scene of constant bustle.Among the liveliness, however, there existed a lonely figure. Dexter stood on the balcony on the second floor, wearing a black outfit that was a stark contrast to the festive season in the morning. That said, he was tall and imposing, not to mention the startlingly good looks he inherited from the Ziegler family gene. Definitely eye candy, but he was haunted by a sense of dejection. If anything, Dexter didn't look like someone who was ready for the New Year, let alone his marriage. Melanie was staring at him when Karen walked past her hurriedly. She immediately called out to her and asked, "What's wrong with Dexter? What's with the sour face? "We're about to celebr

The night was cloaked in tranquility. Michael's car slowly pulled into the manor. Maisie, Sawyer, and Tina got out of the vehicle, and the place immediately came alive with a buzz. After a day of horsing around, they fell into a deep slumber the moment their heads touched the soft, comfortable pillows. Michael returned to the master bedroom and found Eleanor in the walk-in closet. She was about to change out of her outfit and slip into something more comfortable when he stopped her, his voice smooth as velvet."Wait a minute. Let me admire you for a little moment." Holding her slender waist, he spoke in a soft and tender tone. "I hadn't had time to get a good look at you."Eleanor blushed a little from the loving words he uttered. Carrying her up, he set her down gently on the gilded makeup table before lowering his head and kissing her. His lips pressed against her delicate chin. Then, he worked his way up slowly to her cheek before finally lingering at her lips. Eleanor's

Emily wanted to have her wedding ceremony here at Leisure Abode. The Shelton family might've been cultured and refined, but they were far from being prestigious and wealthy. It cost 30 thousand dollars per table to host a wedding ceremony in this restaurant, and they had to have about 50 tables in total. What was worse, the Sutton family didn't offer anything but their unwanted advice. The Sheltons were far from being gullible fools. Emily started making a fuss outside. "Admit it. Your family doesn't respect me and the baby in my belly. Not only were they not willing to reserve a private room, but they also went with the cheapest route for our ceremony. At first, Russell soothed her a little, but she continued to be difficult. Eventually, he fell silent. It was clear that he'd had enough of her tiresome manners. It was a good thing that Declan was there to back Emily up. He hurriedly stepped forward and talked to Russell. "Russell, don't let her get to you. Her mother spoiled
