Chapter 7

Author: Blackseed
Four years ago, Tina's stepmother had tried to send her off to an older man.

She had been locked in the basement, cut off from daylight, her phone taken, with no way to contact her grandparents.

The only reason Tina got out was that Eileen and her husband, Patrick Reed, showed up at her house with a formal proposal, saying that Jonathan wanted to marry her.

That was when her stepmother finally let her go.

The first thing Tina did after getting out was go find Jonathan. He had been lying face-down on the bed, pale and barely conscious. Dark bruises covered his body, and a high fever burned through him.

She had believed he had been punished like that for insisting on marrying her.

So for four years, no matter how distant he was, she never complained. She loved him without holding back, because when he lay there injured and burning with fever, she had made a promise never to leave him.

Now, she understood.

It hadn't been for her. It had been for Sadie.

Her fingers went weak. Something tightened hard around her chest, squeezing the air from her lungs. Her wrist gave way, suddenly numb. The porcelain bowl tilted in her hand.

She tried to catch it, but her fingers slid across the smooth surface. It slipped and shattered against the floor, fragments scattering as soup spread across the tiles.

Her hand stayed suspended in midair, fingers still curved around nothing. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears, her breathing uneven.

"Tina…" Eileen reached for her.

But Tina had already turned and run, not even managing a goodbye.

Behind her, she heard Eileen telling Jonathan to go after her.

He answered the same way he always did, calm and detached. "She won't go far."

He was right.

Before, even when she was angry, she never made it past the gate. If he wanted to find her, he could. If he didn't, she would come back on her own.

When you give too much, it starts to lose its value.

Tina ran out of the estate. Beyond it, the road stretched wide and empty, too far from the city center to easily get a ride.

She walked without direction, dazed, and called Cecelia.

"Tina?"

"Cecelia…"

The moment she spoke, everything broke. She started crying, loud and uncontrolled, like a child.

"What happened? Where are you? I'm coming to get you."

She choked out the address.

"Stay there. Don't move. I'll be there soon."

Cecelia didn't hang up.

Tina could hear her grabbing her keys and getting into the car. The engine started, and she kept talking, filling the silence.

Standing on the side of the road, she told Cecelia what had happened at dinner.

Cecelia swore under her breath.

"Is he even human? He lied to you for four years. Who does that? You kept defending him, saying he was just cold on the outside. He's not. He's cold all the way through. Good thing you finally came to your senses and dumped that loser."

Tina listened, staring blankly ahead.

Then a message popped up on her phone. It was from Edward.

[Johanna, we've run into a major issue in the lab. It's urgent. Can you come and take a look? Sorry for the short notice, but if you can solve this, there's a good chance you'll be approved to join us directly.]

Tina straightened.

She replied immediately, asked for the address, and said she could come now. She planned to head there as soon as Cecelia arrived.

Just then, a black Maybach pulled up in front of her. The window lowered.

Jonathan turned his head slightly. Light cut sharp lines across his profile, his nose high, his eyes deep-set, his gaze dark and still.

"Get in," he said, as if nothing had happened, as if he already knew she would be waiting nearby.

Tina pushed herself to her feet. "No. Cecelia's coming."

At the name, Jonathan showed no visible reaction, but Tina knew. He had never liked her friends. He thought they were aimless, beneath his circle.

"Stop wasting time," he said, his voice even.

"This isn't some stunt to get your attention." Tina lifted her chin slightly. "She's here."

A blue Ferrari screeched to a stop in front of the Maybach.

Jonathan glanced at it once, then back at her. After a brief pause, he gave a small nod and told the driver to move.

Cecelia was already out of the car, striding over. She grabbed Tina's wrist and pulled her behind her, her gaze sharpening as it landed on Jonathan.

"No need to trouble yourself, Mr. Reed," Cecelia said with a tight smile. "God knows what kind of filth you've been hauling around in that car. Tina likes things clean."

Jonathan didn't respond. The window rolled up.

Cecelia pulled Tina into the passenger seat, got in, and drove off, accelerating past the Maybach and leaving it behind.

They drove until they reached a restricted area on the outskirts, where Cecelia had to stop at the perimeter.

"Go on," she said. "Call me when you're done."

Tina nodded, got out, and walked up to the entrance. Just as she was about to message Edward, someone stepped into her path.

Ben Crowley.

One of Jonathan's friends, and the one who disliked her the most. He had never bothered to hide it, always making it clear she wasn't good enough.

He had even tried to set Jonathan up with a young researcher once, suggesting he keep her on the side if he liked her.

Tina had found out and made a scene. Things had only gotten worse after that.

"What are you doing here?" Ben frowned, not bothering to hide his contempt. "You don't belong here. Get out."

"I don't?" she said evenly. "Since when do you get to decide that?"

He let out a short laugh and pointed behind him. "This is a government research facility. What are you doing here? Applying for a cleaning job? You're from a dance school, for God's sake."

"Even if I was, it's none of your business." She left it at that. Arguing with someone like him was a waste of time.

She sent a message to Edward. [I'm here.]

[Good. I've sent someone to the entrance. Do you see him? He'll bring you in.]

Tina looked around. There was no one else there. Just Ben.

At the same time, Ben glanced at his watch after sending a message to Jonathan that he had spotted Tina.

"Where is she?" he muttered.

Tina studied him for a second. "Are you waiting for someone?"

"What's it to you?" He was already irritated, and seeing her made it worse. "Get out of here before security drags you off. You're not supposed to be hanging around here."

Eileen lowered her gaze, her voice turning cold. "So you've changed? You don't love Jonathan anymore?"Tina's fingers tightened. The answer rose to her lips. Yes. She didn't.But she couldn't say it. Not yet.She gave a faint smile. "You know how much I love Jonathan. I've been following him around since I was a kid."Jonathan glanced up at her, paused, then lowered his gaze again and continued eating at an unhurried pace."Something's off." Eileen's eyes swept over Tina's bare neck.In the past, whenever they stayed at the Reed Estate, there were always faint marks there the next morning.Eileen knew what that meant.Today, there was nothing. Which meant nothing had happened last night. Before, with Eileen around to back her up, Tina would've clung to Jonathan without hesitation. And with Eileen present, he wouldn't refuse her.If nothing happened, it could only mean one thing: Tina didn't want to.Eileen said nothing more. She turned and walked into their bedroom, headin

But Tina had no way to wash up.She had taken all her clothes from the apartment. The closet held only Jonathan's things. When he came out of the shower, he saw her still sitting at the vanity, makeup untouched, staring at her phone. He went back into the closet, grabbed one of his shirts, and tossed it over. The fabric fell over her head. She paused, then pulled it off. A faint pine scent clung to it. It took her a second to understand. He wanted her to wash up and wear his shirt.Tina tossed it back without expression. "No need. I'll sit for a while. Once your grandma goes to sleep, I'll use the guest room."Jonathan looked at her. "She had the guest rooms locked."Tina took a slow breath. So Eileen had noticed something and made arrangements ahead of time.Wanting to share a bed and being forced to were two different things. If someone wanted it, they would find a way no matter what. If they didn't, even lying side by side would feel unbearable.Right now, she was firmly in

But now, even if it made Eileen suspicious, Tina couldn't bring herself to move any closer to Jonathan.Jonathan glanced at Tina, saw she didn't react, and looked away. "Grandma, we've been married four years."Eileen let out a cold snort. "Four years, and you've already lost the spark? Tina's still young. Of course, she's drawn to people with more energy. You don't even try to meet her halfway. Keep this up, and she'll find someone younger and leave you."His voice stayed even. "She won't."Tina pressed down the irritation rising in her chest. "It looks like it might rain. Let's head back."Eileen glanced up at the sky. It was heavy and overcast. "Alright, let's go."When they stepped into the elevator, they ran into Sadie. She had a coat thrown over her hospital gown, an IV needle still taped to the back of her hand, like she had just come from a drip.Eileen's expression darkened, but remembering Sadie's usefulness, she held back some of her dislike. "What are you doing he

Eileen came from a family of medical practitioners. She hadn't inherited the profession, but she still knew some symptoms of pregnancy. There was nothing unusual.A flicker of disappointment crossed her face as she let go and sat back down. "You two are trying for a baby, right?""We are," Jonathan answered calmly.Eileen sighed. "If you'd started right after the wedding, your child would probably be in kindergarten by now. You're sensible in every other way, but when it comes to this…" She trailed off, then added, "And that Sadie."At the mention of Sadie, she turned to Tina. "Don't overthink it. I asked Jonathan. There's nothing between them. She's physically impaired, and they've known each other for years. He just helped her out a bit."Her tone grew more serious. "Besides, the company's been investing heavily in AI and robotics lately. Sadie's an expert in that field. She won quite a few awards back in college, and the research exhibition is coming up. If her project s

Eileen turned to Tina. "What's going on? Tell me exactly what happened."Jonathan's gaze settled on her. Beneath the sharp line of his brow, his eyes were dark and steady. Tina didn't need to guess what that look meant. It was a warning. If she said anything, she could forget about Rosalind's surgery. She curved her lips into a faint smile. "I left on my own. I've joined another dance company. You don't need to worry about me."Eileen's jaw tightened as she shot Sadie a hard look. "Then I won't allow this woman to cause trouble in a place Reed Corporation invested in. Jonathan, call right now and have her fired."Sadie's eyes reddened as she looked at him.He stepped in front of her, his broad back blocking the view. "Grandma, everything's already finalized. The performance's coming up, and the roster's been submitted. It can't be changed."Tina let out a quiet, humorless laugh. Her name had been on that roster, too, and she had been replaced without hesitation. But Sadie cou

Eileen picked up on the tension in their voices. She also knew Jonathan was the biggest investor in the arts center. If Tina had suddenly quit, he had to know why. "What exactly is going on here…"Samuel spoke first. "Didn't she switch jobs?"Eileen frowned. "Switched to what?"Tina answered, "I invested in a dance company run by a friend from dance school."Eileen's frown deepened. "A friend? Is it a man?"Tina had always kept her distance from other men. That was one of the reasons Eileen had been comfortable letting her work in a mixed environment like the arts center. She knew how much Tina loved Jonathan. But now she was working closely with another man and didn't seem to care about boundaries anymore."What about your job at the arts center?"Jonathan cut in. "Grandma, you don't need to worry about that.""I was let go," Tina said.At that moment, a figure appeared in the doorway. It was Sadie. She was still in a hospital gown, an IV needle taped to the back of her
