Chapter 1

Author: Quinquennium
The flames soared into the sky.

Behind me, the fire roared like a rabid beast, its fiery tongues chasing me down.

Gasping for breath, I dragged my broken leg and struggled to crawl forward.

Suddenly, familiar knocks resounded from the door.

“Is anyone still in there?”

It was him. My childhood friend.

Austin Xerri.

My eyes burned with tears, and my voice trembled so badly I could barely speak.

“I... A-Austin, I'm in here!”

The closet door had crushed my leg, and even every breath carried the heavy taste of blood.

The moment Austin heard my voice, he visibly panicked.

“Tammy, don't be afraid. I'm coming to get you!”

But heavy debris had already blocked the inside of the room.

There was no way he could move it on his own.

His expression changed dramatically. He immediately grabbed his radio.

“Calling the command center! There's still a trapped person inside, and her condition is critical. Requesting immediate backup from the forcible-entry team!”

My mother Agnes Smyth's tense, stern voice came through at once.

“Command center copies. Report the trapped person's identity.”

“Room 501! Tamara Smyth!” Austin shouted urgently.

The moment he finished speaking, my mother changed her tune.

“Request denied. The forcible-entry team must prioritize public areas.”

“Austin, return to the perimeter immediately.”

Austin froze.

“Ma'am! The fire inside is about to get out of control, and Tammy—”

“Enough!”

Mom cut him off impatiently.

“Austin, Tammy is being unreasonable. Why are you indulging her and losing your judgment, too?

“Her husband is right there at the scene, serving as a fire captain.”

She let out a helpless sigh, as though scolding a child who didn't know any better.

“Tammy, I know you're listening. How many times have I told you not to use your status as a rescue worker's family member to demand special treatment or call in emergency personnel without authorization?

“I taught you so many emergency response procedures. Why can't you save yourself? Why do you insist on competing with Amelia Thorn? That girl has had a hard life since childhood. You need to be more understanding.”

Save myself.

A wave of despair washed over me.

Wasn't that exactly what I was trying to do right now?

Thick smoke poured into my lungs with every breath.

It felt as though a fire were burning in my throat.

The pain was so intense that I couldn't even force out a single word in protest.

When I remained silent for too long, Austin grew frantic.

“Ma'am, this is an emergency. We're not joking around!

“If we wait any longer, something terrible will happen to Tammy!”

Before he could finish, Mom decisively switched channels again.

Not long afterward, my phone lit up with a text message.

“Tamara, grow up! Stop making Austin help you put on this pathetic act of suffering.

“Amelia has asthma, and she's been frightened. I have to divert personnel to escort her to the hospital first. If you can't save yourself, then stay in the safe zone and stop running around. Once the main rescue team has time to spare, they'll naturally come for you.

“And another thing, tell Austin to leave immediately. He's on an active rescue mission right now. If someone photographs him getting all tangled up with you, his former fiancée, at a fire scene and posts it online, do you have any idea how damaging that would be? Do you want to ruin our family's reputation?”

I gave a bitter smile.

I cried until there were no tears left.

Ever since I was a child, my mother had always said the same things to me.

Even back when Austin and I had grown up together, loved each other, and wanted to be together, she had threatened to take her own life unless I broke up with him.

All because Austin had excelled academically.

She was afraid people would accuse him of nepotism with his future mother-in-law, the head of the emergency dispatch center.

Austin wore a black overcoat and held a bouquet of white bellflowers. They were my favorite. He remembered. He had always remembered.Standing before my gravestone, he gazed for a long, long time at the girl in the photograph, her smile bright and radiant."Tammy."When he finally spoke, his voice was so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable."I'm sorry."He paused, as if trying to find the right words, or perhaps struggling to suppress the emotions surging inside him."If I'd stood my ground a little more back then, if I'd married you despite everyone's objections, would things have turned out differently?"His eyes were completely red as he said this.He stood helplessly before my grave, like a child who'd done something wrong."Your mom threatened to kill herself if you married me. She said she'd hang herself or jump off a building. She told you that if you dared to marry me, she'd die right in front of you. You were so frightened that you said we should just forget about i

The case was solved much faster than anyone had expected.Amelia's cousin confessed everything on the third day after he was taken into custody.Slumped in the interrogation chair, he wept uncontrollably, insisting that he'd had no choice. Amelia had told him to use the cheapest materials.“After all, the Smyths were rich. Nothing could possibly go wrong.”The noncompliant polyurethane insulation, the substandard electrical wiring, and the fireproof coating had been cut back to the bare minimum.Every violation was documented in black and white, with irrefutable evidence to back it up.Amelia had no way to defend herself. She tried to pin all the blame on her cousin, claiming she was innocent and knew nothing about what he'd done. However, when the police recovered their chat history from her phone, she finally fell silent. In those logs, she had made her intentions crystal clear. "Cut corners wherever you can. Why not keep the money for ourselves? Just make sure Tamara doesn

"That's right, Tammy. Amelia is so thoughtful. Why do you always assume the worst of her? Always making snide remarks and throwing a fit for no reason."Now, those words felt like knives, stabbing everyone in the heart.Henry roared through clenched teeth."Amelia, our family has always treated you well. Why would you do this to us?"Seeing that there was no longer any point in keeping up the act, Amelia dropped her facade and burst into wild, unhinged laughter."What gives you the right to say that? Didn't you promise to treat me like your own sister? Didn't you say you'd love me like your own daughter?"She pointed at everyone in the room one by one, her voice sharp and grating."If I was the only one who mattered to you, then why did you still treat Tamara so well?"Her words left everyone stunned.Mom spoke with trembling lips."Tammy is my only daughter—""Enough!" Amelia cut her off with a mocking laugh."If she's your only daughter, then why did you treat me so well?

The video played on a loop in the living room. The footage wasn't particularly clear, but it was more than enough for everyone to see exactly what had happened. In the hallway engulfed in flames, I desperately smashed my way out of the closet.Amelia had already been so terrified by the scene before her that she was sobbing uncontrollably.“Help me! Somebody, please help me!”The moment the heavy object began to topple, I instinctively reached out, desperately trying to pull her out of the way.But a cruel, calculating glint flashed through her eyes. While I was completely off guard, she shoved me backward without the slightest hesitation.“No! This isn't real!”Amelia rushed in from outside in a panic, trying to snatch the remote control.“Henry! Mrs. Smyth! Please believe me! This isn't real!”Mom stared at her in disbelief.“Amelia, weren't you having an asthma attack at the hospital?”Henry clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He stared at the f

“No! This absolutely can't be happening!”Inside the charred master bedroom, a deathly silence hung in the air.The calm, confident expression on Mom's face shattered in an instant.“This absolutely cannot be my daughter! It can't be!”Like a madwoman, she suddenly began screaming hysterically in front of the cameras.“Tammy underwent the fire-escape training I personally designed when she was little! She's so smart, and she's always been so good at saving herself. How could she possibly have burned to death here? This must be some kind of dummy someone left behind! It's a prank!”With that, she stumbled into the smoldering wreckage, where the acrid stench of burnt materials still hung in the air.She searched wildly, like a woman who'd lost her mind.“Tammy, stop playing around! Come out already! I know you're upset, and Mom's here to take you home. Come out and show everyone how sensible you are!”Just then, Henry and my newlywed husband had finally arrived.“Mom, what's go

The fire was finally extinguished.Mom calmly and methodically handled the aftermath while Henry was directing emergency vehicles across the city to clear a path for Amelia.James was in the emergency department of a central-city hospital, registering Amelia and paying her medical bills. He'd even pulled every string he could to secure the city's top respiratory specialists.Meanwhile, I had already died inside the burning building, along with the baby I had been carrying for two months. All signs of life had left me.Things hadn't always been this way, though. Growing up, I'd once been the apple of their eyes. Then an orphan with no parents moved into next door, and everything changed.Mom was always praising Amelia with pity in her eyes.“She's been dealt such a cruel hand in life, yet she's still strong and sensible.”Whenever I complained about their favoritism, Henry would frown and scold me.“Amelia has already suffered enough. Can you stop being so selfish?”Even Ja
