Gabriel's POV

Esther Cahill sent a screenshot in the three-person group chat, and Lionel Fox replied with "HAHAHAHAHA".

The two of them went back and forth, the chat pinging nonstop. My fingers were still covered in blood as I struggled to type out a message.

"I just got into a car accident. Could you guys take me to the hospital?"

The moment I sent the message, two new ones popped up, quickly pushing mine out of sight.

My heart clenched, and my calf throbbed with a sharp pain. Blood trickled down my pant leg.

With the last of my strength, I held down the voice message button and asked, "Esther, are you done? I just got into a car accident!"

The group went completely silent. A moment later, Esther sent a dog sticker.

"How could you say something like that just to get our attention? That tactic was pretty popular back then, but that's not gonna fool us, right? @Lionel."

Lionel responded instantly. "Of course. This is nothing. I've even seen a clip of a woman jumping off a building just to get her boyfriend to dump his mistress."

"Oh, I have the video."

"I…"

Esther and Lionel were at it again. They were on a new topic. New jokes.

The group chat was flooded with messages again. My voice message was pushed so far up the chat that no one even noticed.

My phone died. I stared at the black screen and closed my eyes in despair, yet memories kept coming back to me.

Esther and I started dating when we were in our sophomore year. She was so energetic and bubbly. She used to go six miles out of her way just to walk me home.

In the summer, Esther would carry a handheld fan and keep me cool all the way home. During winter, she would tuck her hands in her sleeves to warm them before reaching for mine.

We used to walk to school together and walk home together. We even swore we would get into the same college.

Everyone envied us for being high school sweethearts.

One day, I met Lionel at college. The first time we went out to eat, he and Esther hit it off over the same joke, and their eyes lit up in excitement.

"So, you saw that video too? By the way, what's your personality type?"

"ESTP."

"Me too!"

Lionel slammed his hand on the table in excitement. "I knew we'd get along!"

"Of course. I finally found someone I can actually talk to."

Esther glanced at me with a smile. "Gabriel's an introvert. He doesn't get half the jokes."

I couldn't even get a word in. I sat awkwardly next to them as the ice cubes in my drink melted.

Later, we set up a three-person group chat. They talked all day long, sharing every new meme they found, the weird articles they came across, and the names of the influencers who had just gotten canceled.

I tried to keep up with everything they posted. From time to time, I would chime in, but they would just tease me for acting like a boomer who had just discovered the Internet.

Esther and Lionel seemed to grow closer day by day—one week, one month, 100 days. It wasn't long before they had known each other over 500 days.

But Esther and I never seemed to make much progress as a couple. It felt like there was always some kind of distance between us. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't bridge the distance between us, and it left me feeling helpless.

The metallic smell of blood in the car grew stronger. I was starting to lose consciousness, and it wasn't long before I blacked out from losing too much blood.

When I came to, the first thing I saw was the stark white ceiling of a hospital room.

A nurse was changing my bandages. She told me someone had called an ambulance, and the driver who hit me had been caught after taking off.

In fact, I had been unconscious for the entire day.

I reached for my phone and saw thousands of unread messages in the three-person group chat.

New topics. New memes. They kept laughing at each other's messages.

Esther and Lionel had been chatting since yesterday afternoon, yet none of them asked where I was or whether I was in trouble.

It was as if my absence had done them a favor. Without me there, they could finally talk freely.

At that moment, I suddenly felt like I was done with Esther and Lionel. I no longer wanted to force myself into a group where I never truly belonged.

I pulled up my contacts and called Mom.

"Mom, remember how you asked me if I wanted to go on that exchange program in Cromosia? Well, I'm up for it."

Mom was quiet for a moment on the other end. "What made you change your mind? Back then, you didn't want to leave Esther behind. No matter what, you just wouldn't change your mind…"

"I've thought it through. I'm going to end things with Esther," I replied. I could tell how hoarse my voice was.

Mom remained quiet for a long time, as if she finally understood what was going on. "Alright then. Whatever it is, you can always talk to me.

"We'll always have you back. It'll take seven days for them to process your application. I'll help you book your flight."

"Thanks, Mom." After ending the call, I stared at the ceiling for a long time before letting out a heavy sigh.

"It's over. Esther, Lionel, in seven days, you won't have to act like we're all close friends. We'll never see each other again."

Gabriel's POVThe woman raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, blood seeping through her fingers. She looked up at me, and I realized it was Esther.Esther had grown terribly thin, her cheekbones jutting out. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, but there was still a spark in them. She gazed at me, looking as if she wanted to say something. She then pulled her hand away from her chest. It was trembling, her fingertips slick with blood. Blood trickled between the gaps of her fingers, dripping onto the pages of my book. It soaked into the paper, spreading into a dark stain. Esther reached out to touch my face. Her fingers felt cool against my skin as they brushed lightly over my cheekbone. Her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. "Can you forgive me now?"She fixed her gaze on me as blood continued to drip onto the pages of my book. One drop. Then another. My tears fell onto the back of her hand, and her fingers twitched. "I forgave you a long time ago."A faint

Gabriel's POV"You didn't stand up for me," I said. "Not once.""I kept messaging in that group chat every day, but no one even bothered to reply. People judged me whenever I walked around campus. "After that shelf came crashing down on me in the equipment room, I couldn't even get up. Every second of it was hell. Did you ever stop to think about what I'd been through?"I stopped. The sun felt warm on my face. My eyes stung a little, but no tears fell. "I withdrew from school back home so I could be happy for once. I came here to start a new chapter. "I did all this for myself, not so you could come here and play victim in front of me." I pulled my hand free easily, and she made no move to hold on. "Esther." I finally glanced at her. "You should go home."I turned to leave. I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like someone lowering themselves to the ground. The wooden bench creaked once behind me. Then all I heard was the wind rust

Gabriel's POV"You know how easily embarrassed Gabriel gets. The whole school will be talking about this tomorrow. Have you thought about how he's supposed to face everyone after this?"Lily's voice was full of anger, but she didn't shout. Every word came through clearly. "You embarrassed him in front of so many people. And you call that love?"Esther's shoulders slumped. Lily's words seemed to have taken the last bit of strength out of her. She gulped hard and took a step back in silence. Lily didn't say anything either and turned to look at me. Her gaze searched mine, full of concern. Then she held out her hand to me, palm up, and waited. I walked up to her, placing my hand in hers. She took it and led me back to my dorm. I didn't even look back at Esther. It was quiet beneath the streetlight. She didn't run after me. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like Esther had sunk to her knees. But I didn't stop. Lily's hand was w

Gabriel's POVI got up, still holding that stone, and took a step back. The young women on shore were looking our way. One of them laughed, and another held up her phone to take a picture of us. Lily stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. She whispered in my ear, "If you're scared, just stick close to me. I can get you out of here. They wouldn't even notice."Lily turned sideways, angling her shoulder toward me, making just enough room for me to hide behind her. She kept her back to the people on the shore. I lowered my gaze to her shoulder and at her soft cotton shirt. She stood there as if nothing could ever bother her. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against her shoulder blade. She then led me around the far side of the lake and took me back to the main walkway, using an unlit path. The moment the streetlights came back on, I looked up and uncurled my fingers. The stone was still warm in my palm. Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Esther in

Gabriel's POVLater, Lily and her family migrated to Cromosia. On the day they left, I hid behind the door and refused to come out. Lily stood outside and called my name twice. Mom even tried to convince me to come out and say goodbye to her, but I wouldn't budge. As soon as the door shut, I crouched behind the couch and cried for ages. I held my hot chocolate as we walked, with Lily right beside me. As a cold gust of wind swept in from the street corner, she pulled up her hood and shot me a grin. "If you ever need help, just let me know," she said. "You don't even know anyone here. At least you have me."I replied, "Sure."Lily did keep her promise. She showed up every day with breakfast in hand, waiting downstairs so we could walk to class together. Then she would head to the library and save me a seat by the window. Lily remembered that I didn't like iced drinks, so she always got me something warm instead. When the days got colder, she started bringing an extra jacket

Third-Person POVEsther closed her eyes and said, "I have to find Gabriel."Ethan fell silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed, pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and placed it on the bedside table. "We've looked into it. Gabriel's studying at Lembin College in Cromosia. We reached out to the school while you were in the hospital. A spot just opened up in the exchange program, and they've approved your application."Esther turned to look at the piece of paper. There were a few lines of Cromosian on it, with the school's red seal at the bottom. Beside it was a photo, printed in low resolution. Gabriel stood at the entrance of a red-brick building, with a backpack on his back, his head turned toward someone next to him as he spoke. Esther stared at the photo for a very long time. Gabriel looked different. Sure, he had lost some weight, but he looked happier. She had seen his face from that angle every day over the past three years, but she had never seen him smile
