Chapter 2

Auteur: Dog in a Blanket
Gabriel's POV

The next day, I went back to class, still limping a little. It was a mandatory class for our major, which meant Lionel and Esther were there too.

I opened the classroom door and saw them huddled together, looking at their phones.

Esther looked back at me and casually made her way to me. "Gabriel, I texted you before class. Why didn't you reply? Are you still upset that we saw right through your little act yesterday?"

Esther was still grinning at me, but the moment she noticed the bandages on my leg, her smile faltered.

"You're hurt? What happened?"

"Gabriel, you're finally here!"

Lionel suddenly rushed over. "You didn't reply in the group chat yesterday. Esther and I talked all night. Want to see the photo I edited of her?"

He wanted to show me the photo, but Esther snatched his phone away. "Don't try to ruin my reputation."

"What reputation?" The two of them started wrestling over the phone, giggling as they shoved each other.

Just then, our professor walked in and tapped on the whiteboard, saying that we would be splitting into groups for an assignment.

Lionel immediately raised his hand. "Professor, the three of us are best friends. We have to be in the same group!"

He turned to me with a grin. "Gabriel, you be the leader. You're the responsible one."

I didn't protest. I filled in our group members' names, chose our assignment topic, and sat in a corner.

Lionel patted my shoulder. "Buddy, you know I'm terrible at this stuff. Writing isn't really my thing. I'm counting on you for this project."

With that, he pulled out his phone and leaned over to Esther. He swiped across the screen a couple of times, saying, "Hey, I found you a new husband. Check it out."

Esther looked down at his phone and started laughing, her shoulders shaking. "No, that's yours…"

The two of them huddled together, scrolling through videos throughout the lecture. They kept their voices down, but their laughter never stopped.

I sat quietly in the corner, reviewing the data, laying out the framework, and filling in the details. I wrote so much until my hand ached.

Sunlight streamed through the window, shining on their smiling faces. The glare off the paper made me squint.

I was suddenly reminded of our time in sophomore year. After my classmates were assigned to groups, I was left on my own.

Esther decided to form a group with me, and she didn't even let me work on it. She pulled an all-nighter, researching, making charts, and laying the framework all by herself.

But ever since she met Lionel, they started assuming I would handle all the assignments. She got to have fun with him, while I was stuck doing everything for them.

The bell rang, signaling that class was over. Lionel snatched Esther's phone and made a beeline for the door.

She got up and ran after him. "How dare you take my phone again! Give it back!"

The two of them ran out of the classroom, their laughter drifting down the hallway and gradually fading into the distance.

I was the only one left in the classroom. Left with no choice, I had to continue working on the assignment. I didn't even have time for lunch.

I was still weak from losing so much blood the day before, and the dizziness kept coming back in waves. The moment I finished writing, my vision went black. I staggered into the wall, the back of my head hitting it with a thud.

I leaned against it, breathing heavily before I managed to get up. I wrote my name on the group assignment and handed it in.

That afternoon, the professor called Esther and Lionel out in class. Since they hadn't contributed to the assignment, they were each docked ten points.

Once class was over, Esther yanked me into a corner of the hallway. She kept her voice low, but I could see something shifting in her eyes.

"Gabriel, what the hell is this? Why didn't you put Lionel's name and mine on the assignment? He just got docked ten points. Happy now?"

"I worked on that assignment alone. Why should I put your names on it?"

Esther scowled. "How could you do that to us? It wouldn't have killed you to put our names on the assignment.

"Lionel was the one who brought you into the group and made you leader. How could you do this to him?"

I froze on the spot. I was so hurt that I didn't even know what to say.

Esther paused for a moment before smiling bitterly at me. "No wonder you couldn't fit in with anyone. Maybe you should ask yourself why no one ever wants to be in the same group as you. You're the problem."

With that, Esther turned and walked away with Lionel.

The cold wind swept through the hallway, making me shiver from head to toe. I stood at the same spot for a long time before letting out a sharp breath.

Despite feeling weak from the blood loss, I forced myself to keep going and slowly made my way back to the dorm on my own.

Gabriel's POVThe woman raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, blood seeping through her fingers. She looked up at me, and I realized it was Esther.Esther had grown terribly thin, her cheekbones jutting out. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, but there was still a spark in them. She gazed at me, looking as if she wanted to say something. She then pulled her hand away from her chest. It was trembling, her fingertips slick with blood. Blood trickled between the gaps of her fingers, dripping onto the pages of my book. It soaked into the paper, spreading into a dark stain. Esther reached out to touch my face. Her fingers felt cool against my skin as they brushed lightly over my cheekbone. Her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. "Can you forgive me now?"She fixed her gaze on me as blood continued to drip onto the pages of my book. One drop. Then another. My tears fell onto the back of her hand, and her fingers twitched. "I forgave you a long time ago."A faint

Gabriel's POV"You didn't stand up for me," I said. "Not once.""I kept messaging in that group chat every day, but no one even bothered to reply. People judged me whenever I walked around campus. "After that shelf came crashing down on me in the equipment room, I couldn't even get up. Every second of it was hell. Did you ever stop to think about what I'd been through?"I stopped. The sun felt warm on my face. My eyes stung a little, but no tears fell. "I withdrew from school back home so I could be happy for once. I came here to start a new chapter. "I did all this for myself, not so you could come here and play victim in front of me." I pulled my hand free easily, and she made no move to hold on. "Esther." I finally glanced at her. "You should go home."I turned to leave. I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like someone lowering themselves to the ground. The wooden bench creaked once behind me. Then all I heard was the wind rust

Gabriel's POV"You know how easily embarrassed Gabriel gets. The whole school will be talking about this tomorrow. Have you thought about how he's supposed to face everyone after this?"Lily's voice was full of anger, but she didn't shout. Every word came through clearly. "You embarrassed him in front of so many people. And you call that love?"Esther's shoulders slumped. Lily's words seemed to have taken the last bit of strength out of her. She gulped hard and took a step back in silence. Lily didn't say anything either and turned to look at me. Her gaze searched mine, full of concern. Then she held out her hand to me, palm up, and waited. I walked up to her, placing my hand in hers. She took it and led me back to my dorm. I didn't even look back at Esther. It was quiet beneath the streetlight. She didn't run after me. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like Esther had sunk to her knees. But I didn't stop. Lily's hand was w

Gabriel's POVI got up, still holding that stone, and took a step back. The young women on shore were looking our way. One of them laughed, and another held up her phone to take a picture of us. Lily stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. She whispered in my ear, "If you're scared, just stick close to me. I can get you out of here. They wouldn't even notice."Lily turned sideways, angling her shoulder toward me, making just enough room for me to hide behind her. She kept her back to the people on the shore. I lowered my gaze to her shoulder and at her soft cotton shirt. She stood there as if nothing could ever bother her. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against her shoulder blade. She then led me around the far side of the lake and took me back to the main walkway, using an unlit path. The moment the streetlights came back on, I looked up and uncurled my fingers. The stone was still warm in my palm. Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Esther in

Gabriel's POVLater, Lily and her family migrated to Cromosia. On the day they left, I hid behind the door and refused to come out. Lily stood outside and called my name twice. Mom even tried to convince me to come out and say goodbye to her, but I wouldn't budge. As soon as the door shut, I crouched behind the couch and cried for ages. I held my hot chocolate as we walked, with Lily right beside me. As a cold gust of wind swept in from the street corner, she pulled up her hood and shot me a grin. "If you ever need help, just let me know," she said. "You don't even know anyone here. At least you have me."I replied, "Sure."Lily did keep her promise. She showed up every day with breakfast in hand, waiting downstairs so we could walk to class together. Then she would head to the library and save me a seat by the window. Lily remembered that I didn't like iced drinks, so she always got me something warm instead. When the days got colder, she started bringing an extra jacket

Third-Person POVEsther closed her eyes and said, "I have to find Gabriel."Ethan fell silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed, pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and placed it on the bedside table. "We've looked into it. Gabriel's studying at Lembin College in Cromosia. We reached out to the school while you were in the hospital. A spot just opened up in the exchange program, and they've approved your application."Esther turned to look at the piece of paper. There were a few lines of Cromosian on it, with the school's red seal at the bottom. Beside it was a photo, printed in low resolution. Gabriel stood at the entrance of a red-brick building, with a backpack on his back, his head turned toward someone next to him as he spoke. Esther stared at the photo for a very long time. Gabriel looked different. Sure, he had lost some weight, but he looked happier. She had seen his face from that angle every day over the past three years, but she had never seen him smile
