Chapter 3

Auteur: Dog in a Blanket
Gabriel's POV

Once I was back in my dorm, I locked the door. I pulled open the bottom drawer of my closet. All of Esther's things were inside—a gray hoodie, a mug, and a pack of Polaroid film.

I crouched down and stuffed everything into a trash bag, one by one. As I shoved a scarf inside, I was reminded of that winter back in sophomore year. She handed me the lopsided scarf with a grin, her hands covered in needle pricks.

I tossed a trophy into the trash bag as well, and it cracked in half. I froze, lost in a daze.

In sophomore year, Esther loved playing badminton, and every time she won a trophy, she would insist on giving it to me.

Every day, she would drag me to the badminton court, sit with me in the stands, and explain the rules. All she ever said was, "Just keep watching. You'll get it one day."

I suddenly realized that it wasn't that we didn't have anything to talk about. Whenever she was willing to explain things to me, I understood her perfectly.

But now, I wasn't the one she wanted to talk to anymore.

The next day, I went to class in the afternoon like usual. The moment I walked into the classroom, I found a few guys huddled together in a corner, snickering.

A young woman nearby blushed and gave me a little poke. "Check the class group chat."

I pulled out my phone. I unmuted the class group chat and realized it had been blowing up all afternoon.

Lionel: "Breaking news! Our college heartthrob is secretly a male escort. DM me if you want his service."

There were nearly 200 messages to go through. As I scrolled, I saw messages like "Got more?", "I want more photos!", and "I just saved it."

I tapped on the photo and realized it was me in my dorm. I had just stepped out of the bathroom and was checking myself out in the mirror. I was completely exposed.

The mocking comments hit me hard. It felt like I was being humiliated in public.

I dug my nails into my palms and walked toward Lionel. I seized him by the wrist, my voice trembling uncontrollably.

"You actually posted that photo in the group chat? How could you do this to me?"

The corners of his mouth lifted, and he quickly tried to explain himself. "Gabriel, don't get me wrong. I was just trying to send the latest gossip I found online, and I somehow ended up sending the wrong picture."

"Out of thousands of photos, you ended up sending this one? You clearly did it on purpose."

"I really didn't…"

"Delete the photo right now." I reached for Lionel's phone, but he tightened his grip and pulled it out of my reach.

I stepped forward to reach for it, but as he leaned back, the chair tipped sideways. He crashed to the floor, his knee slamming into the table leg.

The phone slipped from Lionel's grip and fell to the floor, causing the screen to crack.

The class fell silent. Then someone held up their phone and started recording.

Esther suddenly opened the classroom door, two bottles of drinks in her hands. The moment she saw Lionel sprawled on the ground, she froze.

"Why did you push Lionel? He's your best friend. Why are you being so petty?"

All I could hear was my own hoarse voice. "Me? Petty? He just posted a photo of me like that in the group chat!"

Esther's brows furrowed as her voice grew colder. "Lionel already apologized. Aren't you going to let this go?

"You're the reason the professor docked his points yesterday, and now you just pushed him? Apologize to him now!"

I stared at Esther. I had seen the exact same serious expression back in high school.

I almost laughed in exasperation. "I'm the victim here. Why should I apologize?"

Esther fell silent for a moment before letting out a sigh. Finally, she spoke, her voice carrying an unmistakable threat.

"Then I have nothing else to say. You really don't fit in with us, huh? Think about what you've done. I'll have Lionel delete the picture once you've apologized."

Esther helped Lionel out of the classroom, bending down to check if his knee was okay. I couldn't stand to see how worried she was for him.

I ran past the classrooms along the hallway and across the field. I found a quiet spot beneath a giant tree, crouched beneath it, and finally let all my frustration out.

Once I was back in my dorm, I made up my mind to take three days off.

Gabriel's POVThe woman raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, blood seeping through her fingers. She looked up at me, and I realized it was Esther.Esther had grown terribly thin, her cheekbones jutting out. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, but there was still a spark in them. She gazed at me, looking as if she wanted to say something. She then pulled her hand away from her chest. It was trembling, her fingertips slick with blood. Blood trickled between the gaps of her fingers, dripping onto the pages of my book. It soaked into the paper, spreading into a dark stain. Esther reached out to touch my face. Her fingers felt cool against my skin as they brushed lightly over my cheekbone. Her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. "Can you forgive me now?"She fixed her gaze on me as blood continued to drip onto the pages of my book. One drop. Then another. My tears fell onto the back of her hand, and her fingers twitched. "I forgave you a long time ago."A faint

Gabriel's POV"You didn't stand up for me," I said. "Not once.""I kept messaging in that group chat every day, but no one even bothered to reply. People judged me whenever I walked around campus. "After that shelf came crashing down on me in the equipment room, I couldn't even get up. Every second of it was hell. Did you ever stop to think about what I'd been through?"I stopped. The sun felt warm on my face. My eyes stung a little, but no tears fell. "I withdrew from school back home so I could be happy for once. I came here to start a new chapter. "I did all this for myself, not so you could come here and play victim in front of me." I pulled my hand free easily, and she made no move to hold on. "Esther." I finally glanced at her. "You should go home."I turned to leave. I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like someone lowering themselves to the ground. The wooden bench creaked once behind me. Then all I heard was the wind rust

Gabriel's POV"You know how easily embarrassed Gabriel gets. The whole school will be talking about this tomorrow. Have you thought about how he's supposed to face everyone after this?"Lily's voice was full of anger, but she didn't shout. Every word came through clearly. "You embarrassed him in front of so many people. And you call that love?"Esther's shoulders slumped. Lily's words seemed to have taken the last bit of strength out of her. She gulped hard and took a step back in silence. Lily didn't say anything either and turned to look at me. Her gaze searched mine, full of concern. Then she held out her hand to me, palm up, and waited. I walked up to her, placing my hand in hers. She took it and led me back to my dorm. I didn't even look back at Esther. It was quiet beneath the streetlight. She didn't run after me. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like Esther had sunk to her knees. But I didn't stop. Lily's hand was w

Gabriel's POVI got up, still holding that stone, and took a step back. The young women on shore were looking our way. One of them laughed, and another held up her phone to take a picture of us. Lily stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. She whispered in my ear, "If you're scared, just stick close to me. I can get you out of here. They wouldn't even notice."Lily turned sideways, angling her shoulder toward me, making just enough room for me to hide behind her. She kept her back to the people on the shore. I lowered my gaze to her shoulder and at her soft cotton shirt. She stood there as if nothing could ever bother her. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against her shoulder blade. She then led me around the far side of the lake and took me back to the main walkway, using an unlit path. The moment the streetlights came back on, I looked up and uncurled my fingers. The stone was still warm in my palm. Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Esther in

Gabriel's POVLater, Lily and her family migrated to Cromosia. On the day they left, I hid behind the door and refused to come out. Lily stood outside and called my name twice. Mom even tried to convince me to come out and say goodbye to her, but I wouldn't budge. As soon as the door shut, I crouched behind the couch and cried for ages. I held my hot chocolate as we walked, with Lily right beside me. As a cold gust of wind swept in from the street corner, she pulled up her hood and shot me a grin. "If you ever need help, just let me know," she said. "You don't even know anyone here. At least you have me."I replied, "Sure."Lily did keep her promise. She showed up every day with breakfast in hand, waiting downstairs so we could walk to class together. Then she would head to the library and save me a seat by the window. Lily remembered that I didn't like iced drinks, so she always got me something warm instead. When the days got colder, she started bringing an extra jacket

Third-Person POVEsther closed her eyes and said, "I have to find Gabriel."Ethan fell silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed, pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and placed it on the bedside table. "We've looked into it. Gabriel's studying at Lembin College in Cromosia. We reached out to the school while you were in the hospital. A spot just opened up in the exchange program, and they've approved your application."Esther turned to look at the piece of paper. There were a few lines of Cromosian on it, with the school's red seal at the bottom. Beside it was a photo, printed in low resolution. Gabriel stood at the entrance of a red-brick building, with a backpack on his back, his head turned toward someone next to him as he spoke. Esther stared at the photo for a very long time. Gabriel looked different. Sure, he had lost some weight, but he looked happier. She had seen his face from that angle every day over the past three years, but she had never seen him smile
